“Tooning Out the News,” the animated political satire executive produced by Stephen Colbert, was all set to launch March 16 on CBS All Access when the coronavirus lockdown put the show on hiatus. But after completely reinventing its workflow remotely and becoming totally dependent on Slack and Zoom, they finally aired the first episode on April 7, with Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, making a cartoonish guest appearance denying a “Staingate” controversy on a chair at the members-only Grand Havana Room.

CBS All Access and Stephen Colbert are teaming up on an ambitious new animated comedy series, one that will require a quick turnaround to mock the same day’s news.
“Tooning Out the News” (get it?) hails from CBS Television Studios, with Chris Licht (“The Late Show”) and the “Our Cartoon President” team of Rj Fried and Tim Luecke joining Colbert as executive producers. Their already-illustrated Donald Trump will probably provide a helpful template for this series.

In February 2018, Showtime premiered its new satirical animation, Our Cartoon President. Developed by Stephen Colbert, R. Fried, Tim Luecke, Chris Licht, and Matt Lapin, the animation began life as a bit-piece on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show before being commissioned for its own series in July 2017. Set in various Washington D.C. locations, the series puts the life of Donald Trump, Melania, and the various cohorts and confidants surrounding them under the microscope. Its second season premiered on May 12, 2019, and has proved just as popular a send-up of Trump’s administration as the first. Read on to find

Showtime is eyeing more episodes of half-hour animated series Our Cartoon President – particularly as we head into an election year.
The premium cabler is in discussions for a third season of the show, which is exec produced by Stephen Colbert. The show follows the “tru-ish misadventures of the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, and his merry band of advisors and family members.”
The first 10 episodes of the show, which is produced by CBS Television Studios, introduced audiences to Trump’s attempts at “winning” the State of the Union address, comforting disaster victims and rolling back President Obama’s accomplishments, as well as his co-dependent relationship with the media. Season 2 has taken aim at the crowded Democratic presidential primary field.
The second season premiered in May and Gary Levine, President of Entertainment at Showtime Networks, told Deadline he is hopeful of more ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

With Our Cartoon President, co-creator R.J. Fried tried to do something that had never been done before, producing topical animation that could keep up with the relentless chaos and daily headlines surrounding the Trump administration.
Based on a popular recurring segment from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Showtime’s satirical animated series was conceived as a workplace comedy, where the workplace in question happened to be the White House—a heightened character study of Trump, his family, confidants, flunkies and more. Following conversations between Colbert, Late Show showrunner Chris Licht, producer Matt Lappin, and animator Tim Luecke, late-night veteran Fried was brought in to showrun, at the recommendation of Robert Smigel.
For both Colbert and Fried, it was important to approach the show with one idea in mind. “The thing that Stephen always said is that Donald Trump, for all the horrible things he’s doing, is the hero of his own journey.

“Our Cartoon President,” Showtime’s animated comedy that skewers Donald Trump‘s White House, is hoping to shake up the 2018 Emmys … bigly. Best Animated Program has seen its fair share of repeat winners over the years, with 10-time champ “The Simpsons” being the granddaddy of all. “South Park” is next at three wins, followed by “Bob’s Burgers,” “Futurama” and “Star Wars: Clone Wars” with two apiece. But “Our Cartoon President” has a secret weapon that could help it break through with Emmy voters: co-creator Stephen Colbert.
SEE2018 Emmy predictions slugfest: ‘Ozark,’ ‘Mindhunter,’ ‘The Chi’ and more hope to break into Best Drama Series [Video & Podcast]
Colbert is an Emmy favorite, winning nine trophies over the years for writing and producing both “The Colbert Report” and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” As the star of CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” he was tasked with hosting last year’s Emmy ceremony to great fanfare.

“Our Cartoon President’ is a lie worthy of America’s most dangerous liar, but far less deserving of the comparable attention it’s likely to receive. For one, it’s absolutely part of the same problem it pretends to be above: humanizing a man who tells us all we need to know about him every time he speaks or tweets (freely, rather than reading from a speech). Much like the Cheeto-in-Chief himself, Showtime’s edgeless animated comedy pays lip service to its most troubling issue before dodging the problem in favor of inane gibberish. “Some are worried this show might humanize me,” the animated President Trump says in the opening to Episode 1. “Well, too late, folks. After my recent physical, Dr. Ronny assured me that I am a human being and there’s no cure for that.”
