The only mystery left unsolved for us after the finale of the darkly comic Netflix series Bodkin was how the three lead actors felt about shooting some of their characters’ biggest moments. So, we asked! Check out the video (above) to hear from Siobhán Cullen, Will Forte, and Robyn Cara as they reflect on the story of cynical investigative reporter Dove (Cullen) grudgingly working with an earnest American true-crime podcaster, Gilbert (Forte), and his ambitious researcher Emmy (Cara) to investigate the mysterious disappearances of three people in the small Irish town of Bodkin. One of the tidbits we uncovered involves Dove’s number one suspect, the former smuggler Seamus (David Wilmot). He memorably gags Gilbert with the reporter’s recorder: “I remember all that went into thinking about the recorder being shoved into my mouth,” Forte says. “I was so scared that it was going to knock my teeth out!

“True-crime podcasts aren’t journalism. They’re necrophilia.” So says Dove (Siobhan Cullen), an investigative reporter for The Guardian, whose disdain for professional podcasting would make even the most judgemental parent defend their child’s chosen “career.” Throughout “Bodkin,” a fictional Netflix mystery set in a fictional Irish town about its fishy, fictional residents (and fictional visiting reporters), Dove never misses an opportunity to rail against the hottest nonfiction genre of the last decade or so. At first, it’s hard to blame her. Certain true-crime podcasts, documentaries, and reports have faced criticism for years over unethical practices, whether it’s playing loosey-goosey with the facts, disrespecting victims’ privacy, or overextending its story for extra attention. Plus, after an untold number of narratives about missing kids and dead women, we’re overdue, as a culture, to pivot away from true crime and into something new. (Maybe toward truly funny comedies?...

In Netflix’s new series Bodkin, hard-bitten newspaper reporter Dove (Siobhán Cullen) is forced to team up with veteran podcaster Gilbert (Will Forte) to investigate a 25-year-old mystery in the eponymous Irish town. The reluctant partners clash on everything, not least of which is that Dove thinks they can, and should, find out what really happened in Bodkin back in the day.
“Have you ever listened to a podcast where they actually solve it?” Gilbert asks, incredulous. “I need diversions. Red herrings. Human interest. The stuff that people actually care about.

Bodkin, Netflix’s new darkly comic mystery series about true crime podcasting, is a slow burn, not to be confused with Slow Burn, the true crime podcast briefly adapted as an Epix series.
Created by Jez Scharf, boasting the Obamas’ Higher Ground among its producers and featuring Will Forte as its most prominent star, Bodkin is a show that I felt a reasonable amount of investment in by the end. But the cumulative effect belies the fact that it’s a series that does a bunch of little things well in a low-key way, rather than doing any one thing spectacularly well.
It’s a satire without any big laughs, a puzzle without many shocking twists and a character study, but of a very muted sort. If you go in looking for big reactions to anything, you’ll be disappointed. If you look for some minor insights into our instinctive love of voyeuristic storytelling,...

No matter how many crimes are committed because people are inspired by what they hear on various true crime podcasts, the genre remains extremely popular. Millions of people get their thrills from real-life stories and dive deep into the minds of murderers through their psychological portraits.
Only Murders in the Building isn't the only show that depicts fans of the genre facing real-life mysteries, but it's safe to say it's the most popular. Starring A-list celebrities like Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Meryl Streep and Cara Delevigne, the show has been unparalleled for the past 3 seasons. But now things might change.
What Bodkin Is About?
To say that May is packed with Netflix premieres would be an understatement. There are many different original series premiering for the first time or returning with new seasons this month, and Bodkin is one of them.

In 2018, Michelle and Barack Obama's production company Higher Ground signed a multi-year deal with Netflix, the biggest streaming service in the world. The Obamas were set to produce a number of high-profile projects, both scripted and unscripted.
Their first scripted project will premiere on May 9th, and it's not what you might have expected from the former President and First Lady. Bodkin is a dark comedy/mystery/thriller set in a small Irish town, starring comedy legend Will Forte.
What's It About?
True crime podcasters Gilbert (Forte), Dove (Siobhán Cullen), and Emmy (Robyn Cara) are desperately hoping to find a story juicy enough to make their podcast stand out in a crowded market. They decide to head to Ireland, where three strangers once disappeared from the (fictional) small coastal town of Bodkin.
The podcasters come to Bodkin on the festival of Samhain (which one character flippantly describes as 'the Irish Day of the Dead'.

Series creator and showrunner Jez Scharf says that with Netflix’s Bodkin, he wanted to “make a dark comedy about what the reality of making a true crime podcast might be like.” Will Forte stars as the true crime podcaster who travels to a small Irish town and stirs up a hornet’s nest with his investigation.
“It’s fascinating and set in these beautiful locations that only Ireland can provide,” says Forte in the three-minute behind-the-scenes featurette. The new video also features Siobhán Cullen (“Dove”), Robyn Cara (“Emmy”), Chris Walley (“Sean O’Shea”), and David Wilmot (“Seamus”) interview clips.
“Bodkin is a dark comedic thriller about a motley crew of podcasters who set out to investigate the mysterious disappearance of three strangers in a quaint, coastal Irish town. But once they start pulling at threads, they discover a story much bigger and weirder than they could have ever imagined,” reads Netflix’s synopsis.

Former SNL cast member Kristen Wiig joined the show’s “five-timers club” on Saturday, with her monologue featuring appearances by a number of other former hosts, some of whom haven’t had that gig five times but wore jackets of their own nonetheless.

Kristen Wiig returned to Saturday Night Live to host the show for the fifth time, which meant she would be inducted into the five-timers club.
“I am so happy to be back, and I am so excited because it is my fifth time hosting, so I am officially in the five-timers club,” Wiig said at the beginning of her monologue.
The Palm Royale star then took a moment to say hello to the band and explain that, as a former cast member, it was special to be a part of the exclusive club. Paul Rudd popped up among the audience with his club jacket asking if he could see the script to be part of the sketch where she gets the jacket.
“Oh! No, I’m sorry. I don’t think we’re doing one of those,” Wiig said.

It was a big night for Kristen Wiig on Saturday Night Live as she joined the Five-Timers Club. However, she was welcomed into the elite group by a bunch of mostly Non-Five-Timers Club members.
The actress and comedian kicked off her monologue, saying, “I am so happy to be back, and I am so excited because it is my fifth time hosting. So I’m officially in the Five-Timers Club!”
She then took a moment to acknowledge the sketch comedy show’s band, but shortly after, that’s when the celebrity cameos started, beginning with Paul Rudd, who previously joined the club in 2021.
“I also heard a rumor that you might be doing one of those five-timer sketches featuring awesome celebrity cameos,” Rudd said after popping up in the Studio 8H audience. “So, is there like a script or something I could look at for that?” But unfortunately, Wiig informed...

A star-studded group of veteran “Saturday Night Live” guest hosts were on hand this evening to welcome Kristen Wiig into the “Five-Timers Club.” But much to Wiig’s chagrin, most of them haven’t matched her feat of actually hosting “SNL” five times.
The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member made her fifth appearance as host — having previously hit the stage in 2013, 2016 and twice in 2020.
The stolen “SNL” valor actually began with a legit five-timer: Paul Rudd, on hand to welcome her from the audience..
“As a former cast member, it is very special,” Wiig said. “I’m really excited about getting my jacket tonight… they don’t just hand the jackets off to anyone.”
Well, not quite. Soon more stars came out: Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, Martin Short, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Martin Short and Ryan Gosling. None of whom haven actually hosted five times yet.

We've so far been used to former President Barack Obama's Higher Ground production company putting out high-minded and compelling documentaries. With new series Bodkin, though, which stars Will Forte, it appears that it is now heading into Only Murders In The Building territory (spliced here with Ballykissangel?), blending true-crime podcasting with comedy. Check out the first trailer:
Forte here is Gilbert, a charming, open, and enthusiastic podcaster from the States who has family roots that stretch back to Ireland and he's looking to discover his roots. But he gets more than he bargained for when he teams up with Dove (Siobhán Cullen), a hard-nosed investigative journalist from Dublin who has a fine-tuned bullshit detector and a healthy disdain for authority and hypocrisy. Then there's Emmy (Robyn Cara), a bright, funny and eager to please researcher who has been helping Gilbert with the podcast.

Will Forte just might be a new honorary Irish citizen on the internet thanks to upcoming Netflix comedy series “Bodkin.”
Forte stars as a podcaster who travels to a small coastal Irish town to investigate the mysterious disappearance of three strangers. Siobhán Cullen and Robyn Cara play Forte’s fellow podcast hosts who uncover a story much bigger and weirder than they could have ever imagined.
Per the official synopsis, as the heroes of “Bodkin” try to discern fact from fiction — about the case, about their colleagues, and, most painfully, themselves — the series challenges our perception of truth and exposes the stories we tell ourselves to justify our beliefs or validate our fears. Chris Walley and David Wilmot also star.
Each of the seven “Bodkin” episodes span one hour. The original series is the latest Netflix venture from Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground productions, which was recently behind Oscar-nominated “Rustin.

'Coyote vs. Acme' screenwriter Samy Burch says that the shelved film could still be released. The live-action/animated hybrid movie was controversially axed by Warner Bros. last November but the scribe has revealed that talks are still "ongoing" as to whether audiences will get the chance to see the movie.Speaking to IndieWire, Samy said: "As far as I know it's ongoing. I think we're all pretty heartbroken about it. We hope it will somehow find its home and not end up stuck in a vault for the rest of time. That would be a great resolution."She continued: "I know that they have been screening places and I think they still are."I hope that I'm allowed to say that. I'm going completely rogue here. It's just the best group of people. Dave Green, who directed it, I just love so much. Will Forte is amazing in the movie.

You guys can back off David Zaslav for a minute: Bob Iger says Disney too has “killed a few projects.” The difference? They’ve done it quietly and at (presumably) a much earlier stage than, say, “Batgirl” or “Coyote vs. Acme,” the two most infamous (and most egregious) last-minute movie cancellations in recent Hollywood history.
“When we talk about improving our film slate there are really three approaches, one is you have to kill things you no longer believed in and that’s not easy in this business, because either you’ve gotten started, you have some sunk costs ,or it’s a relationship with either your employees or with the creative community, and it’s not an easy thing, but you’ve got to make those tough calls,” Disney CEO Iger said Tuesday at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference. “We’ve actually made those tough calls,...

After seeing the finished – and now deleted – Coyote Vs Acme film, Will Forte has penned an open letter to everybody who brought the project to life.
Following a few months when it seemed like the film Coyote Vs Acme might have earned an unlikely reprieve, Warner Bros has seemingly made a final decision regarding the film’s fate. That means deleting the collaborative efforts of a lot of talented and hard-working people from the very same creative community that the studio relies on for the continued lifeblood of its business. Sounds like a wonderful business strategy to us.

“Coyote vs. Acme” star Will Forte has broken his silence on Warner Bros.’ shelving of the completed but unlikely-to-be-released Looney Tunes movie. Forte posted a statement to social media addressed to the film’s cast and crew on Thursday, praising their work on the “incredible” film.
“I know a lot of you haven’t gotten a chance to see our movie,” wrote Forte, who stars in the live-action/animated hybrid comedy as Wile E. Coyote’s attorney. “And sadly, it’s looking like you never will.”
“When I first heard that our movie was getting ‘deleted,’ I hadn’t seen it yet,” he continued. “So I was thinking what everyone else must have been thinking: this thing must be a hunk of junk. But then I saw it. And it’s incredible.”
“Super funny throughout, visually stunning, sweet, sincere, and emotionally resonant in a very earned way,” the “Saturday Night Live” alum wrote.

Will Forte is applauding the “Coyote vs. Acme” cast and crew, especially since the film is indefinitely shelved by Warner Bros. Discovery.
Forte issued a social media statement (below) that cited his “confusion and frustration” over the Looney Tunes cartoon live-action hybrid movie being effectively canceled by Wbd.
“Super funny throughout, visually stunning, sweet, sincere, and emotionally resonant in a very earned way. As the credits rolled, I just sat there thinking how lucky I was to be part of something so special,” Forte wrote. “That quickly turned to confusion and frustration. This was the movie they’re not going to release?”
The film was written by Oscar-nominated “May December” scribe Samy Burch and stars Forte and John Cena. “Coyote vs. Acme” completed production in New Mexico in 2022 and was set to start streaming on Wbd’s platform Max on July 21. James Gunn produced the feature and also received a story credit.

WB executives killed the film in November, leading to social media outrage from cinephiles tired of seeing higher-ups scrap films in favor of a tax cut and other “benefits.” Forte knows people’s anger toward Warner’s decision to shelve Coyote vs. Acme and has some words to add to the ongoing conversation.
In a social media post this morning, Forte said, “I know that a lot of you haven’t gotten a chance to see our movie. And sadly, it’s a looking like you never will.” Forte also says that when he heard the film was getting deleted, he had yet to see it.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2.] After increasing its viewership for six consecutive weeks in Season 2, The Gilded Age was renewed for Season 3 at HBO. The cable network announced the exciting renewal on December 21, just four days after The Gilded Age Season 2 finale and that big Ada plot twist. Now that the Van Rhijn/Forte family’s fortune has been reversed again, and now that Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) has won her opera, war drama could unfold in The Gilded Age Season 3? TV Insider spoke with executive producer and writer Sonja Warfield about the possibilities. Season 3 planning had not yet begun when the Season 2 finale aired on Sunday, December 17. They didn’t want to begin work on a season that wasn’t yet official. But after the widowed Ada (Cynthia Nixon) surprisingly inherited her late husband’s fortune, the world is Ada’s oyster. She’s the ...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: It’s Christmas at the Castle… and the Wood Axe is Jewish!
No one ever remembers the part of “Beauty and the Beast” where Belle nearly drowns because a Christmas tree falls into a lake, do they?
As a daughter of the ‘90s, Disney’s turn-of-the-century Princess Renaissance was my childhood. Bedsheets, pajamas, school supplies, toys, and anything else that furnished my little life was frequently themed to honor Jasmine, Ariel, Mulan, Pocahontas, or Belle: a squadron of girl-power role models that, all things considered, weren’t too shabby in retrospect.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 7, “Wonders Never Cease.”] Tragedy befell the Van Rhijn and Forte households in The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 7. The penultimate episode of the season saw a death in the family and the shocking loss of the family fortune. Here, executive producers Julian Fellowes and Sonja Warfield explain to TV Insider why these hardships were necessary. It feels like Ada’s (Cynthia Nixon) happiness was taken away just as quickly as it came. After falling quickly in love with Reverend Luke Forte (the endlessly endearing Robert Sean Leonard), the newlyweds were dealt a heavy blow with his cancer diagnosis in Episode 6. In Episode 7, his health quickly declined, leading to his tragic death near the end of the episode. Agnes (Christine Baranski), Marian (Louisa Jacobson), and the household staff rallied around Ada and Luke in their time of need, providing shoulders to cry on when he was lost.

The first episode of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off seems designed to make even the most passionate fans of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s comic books — or the cult classic film Edgar Wright made from them — wonder if perhaps they’ve had their fill of Scott and friends up in Toronto. Much of the premiere, written by O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, is simply recreating scenes familiar from the comics and the movie. The dialogue is tweaked here...

Produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie), this inspired comedy takes the previously family-friendly talking dog movie genre and turns it into an outrageously filthy, frequently gasp-inducing, R-rated laugh riot. It just might be the funniest film of the year.
Will Ferrell (sounding a lot like Paul Rudd) voices Reggie, a hopelessly naïve Border Terrier who can’t see that his owner, Doug (Will Forte) is a hateful, selfish loser who despises him. One day, Doug drives Reggie several miles away and abandons him, though Reggie still thinks they are playing their favourite game, “Fetch and f**k”, so called because that’s what Doug yells, every time Reggie finds his way home again.

Pixar’s first long-form original streaming series, “Win or Lose,” has been bumped to 2024. It was originally meant to premiere in December.
Disney just released the Disney+ listings for December and it’s not there. TheWrap had been hearing for a little while that it had been delayed until next year; this confirms it.
The series, created by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates, focuses on a co-ed middle school softball team called the Pickles and the events leading up to their big championship game. Each episode focuses on a different player or parent and sees what the world is like through their eyes. Will Forte, Rosa Salazar and Milan Ray are among the voice cast. The series will consist of eight episodes.
“Win or Lose” was announced during the Disney’s Investor Day event at the end of 2020. Last year, during the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, Forte’s involvement...

Jason Sudeikis and his old Saturday Night Live cast mate Will Forte were all set for a reunion duet at a Kansas City benefit concert over the weekend when one of Sudeikis’ more recent costars arrived to, musically at least, save the day: Ted Lasso‘s Hannah Waddingham.
Appearing at Steps of Faith’s Thundergong!, an annual Kansas City benefit event to raise funds for amputees, host Sudeikis began to sing A Star is Born‘s “Shallow” with special guest Forte when Waddingham muscled her way into the duet and stole the show.
Waddingham’s vocal chops might have surprised folks who only know the actress from her Emmy-winning turn as Rebecca Welton on Ted Lasso. In truth, she’s been nominated for three Olivier Awards for her West End musical performances in Spamalot, A Little Night Music and Kiss Me, Kate.

“Coyote vs. Acme,” a live-action movie that stars John Cena, Will Forte and Lana Condor, has been shelved by Warner Bros. a year after it was completed.
This follows Warner Bros. similarly shelving nearly completed features “Batgirl” and “Scoob’s Haunted Holiday.”
“With the re-launch of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation in June, the studio has shifted its global strategy to focus on theatrical releases. With this new direction, we have made the difficult decision not to move forward with ‘Coyote vs Acme.’ We have tremendous respect for the filmmakers, casts, and crew, and are grateful for their contributions to the film,” a Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group spokesperson said.
The movie was an adaptation of a 1990 short story by Ian Frazier that first appeared in the New Yorker. Development on the project began back in 2018, with Chris McKay attached as a producer. Shortly afterward, Dave Green, director of “Earth to Echo...

In another maneuver by the David Zaslav-run Warner Bros Discovery to kill movies, we hear on very good authority that Warner Bros will not be releasing the hybrid live-action/animated Coyote vs. Acme, with the conglom taking an estimated $30M write-down on the $70M production. We understand the write-down for the pic was applied to the recently reported Q3.
This reps the third time that Zaslav’s Warner Bros has pulled the plug on a movie greenlighted by the previous Warner Media administration, the other two being the Max-destined Batgirl and the animated Scoob Holiday Haunt!
The difference here is that Coyote vs. Acme is a completed movie with very good test scores, 14 points above the family norm. We’re told that the cash-strapped Warners finds that it’s not worth the cost to release the film theatrically or to sell to other buyers (and there are parties who...

The Groundlings will host an improv musical fundraising event on Oct. 26, featuring Ana Gasteyer, Kristen Bell, Kristen Wiig and Will Forte. The event, held at the Performing Arts Center at Vista Del Mar, will benefit the Motion Picture & Television Fund to support below-the-line workers impacted by the strikes.
“One Night Only,” created and directed by Groundlings Main Company member Andrew Leeds, is a full production of a well-known Broadway musical. The catch? The improvisers are given the script and their roles only 24 hours in advance.
“These strikes have taken a terrible toll on our amazing crews, and it isn’t over yet. Even with the WGA strike ending, most crew members won’t be able to start work again until the SAG-AFTRA deal is ratified,” Leeds said in a statement. “Even then, many will be fighting to survive as they wait for productions to start back up.

It's not easy being an R-rated comedy in 2023. After enjoying some modest success with the horror-flavored "Cocaine Bear," Universal saw its "Dracula" spin-off "Renfield" flounder at the box office earlier this year. The studio's latest adult-oriented chucklefest, "Strays," didn't fare much better upon its theatrical release in August either. Opening to lukewarm responses, the raunchy dog-com has struggled to make a dent financially.
Another major factor working against "Strays" was timing. Since the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has continued to dig its heels in rather than address the existential crisis currently faced by the striking actors' and writers' guilds, that means the "Strays" cast has been unable to promote the film. That includes comedic superstars like Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx, who lend their voices to the movie's misbehaving mutts and could've easily gotten more people to turn out for the film, had they been able to make the press rounds.

Will Forte is one of the most reliable names in comedy. Whether it's leading the absurd action of "MacGruber," lending his voice to animated comedy in the likes of "Rick and Morty" and "The Simpsons," or bringing to life various incarnations of Abraham Lincoln in "Clone High," "The Lego Movie," and "America: The Motion Picture," you can always count on Forte to inspire plenty of hilarity. But there's also a gentle charm to his presence when he's not driving the comedy bus. That's what makes him the perfect choice to play a father in the Sundance-selected family comedy "Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out."
Directed by Jake Van Wagoner, the film follows teen girl Itsy Levan, who finds herself suddenly stuck in the middle of nowhere after her home-flipping parents move their family out of the big city. At her new school, Itsy meets the quirky but intelligent Calvin Kipler,...

Sundance is kicking into high gear in Park City, Utah this week, and as it does, the rest of the world is getting a first look at the lineup as trailers for a few of the films included in the festival begin to drop. Among them is "Aliens Abducted My Parents And Now I Feel Kinda Left Out," a family-friendly movie with a title that's both a total mouthful and immediately intriguing.
"Aliens Abducted My Parents And Now I Feel Kinda Left Out" is set to premiere at the festival as one of a small handful of films in the kid-friendly section, but it doesn't look so much like a kids' movie as it does like a sweet coming-of-age indie film with a sci-fi twist. The trailer opens with a bespectacled boy stargazing with his dad (Will Forte), who tells him that an alien family could be out there looking at them right now.

Will Forte Says 'Chances Are Slim' For MacGruber Season 2, But Will 'Never Count It Out' [Exclusive]
MacGruber has survived a lot since the character first debuted on "Saturday Night Live" in 2007. The "MacGyver"-like antihero has been blown to bits by exploding bombs countless times, distracted by everything from his grandma-turned-fiance (Betty White) to wild Covid-era conspiracy theories. He lost his wife (Maya Rudolph) seconds after they got married, got out of some tricky situations with the help of a creatively-placed stalk of celery, and faced down villains played by Val Kilmer and Billy Zane, among others.
But it's unclear at this point if MacGruber will survive his greatest foe yet: the increasingly crowded streaming era. /Film's Ethan Anderton interviewed "MacGruber" co-creator and star Will Forte ahead of his role in the Sundance film "Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out." During the conversation, the comedian revealed that the show's fate doesn't look super-promising, but also notes that MacGruber has beat the odds before.

Ahead of the last episode of the year, which aired Dec. 17 and was hosted by Elvis star Austin Butler — and which also served as Cecily Strong’s final episode after her 10-season run on the NBC sketch comedy series — The Hollywood Reporter asked members of the cast which sketch inspired each of them to one day dream of making audiences laugh in Studio 8H on Saturday nights.
Bowen Yang

Kenan Thompson
“‘James Brown’s Celebrity Hot Tub Party,’ with Eddie Murphy.
