Warning: spoilers for The Politician below!
The Politician manages to pack in so much drama in eight episodes that it's easy to forget the show's biggest storyline: the class presidency. Ben Platt's Payton Hobart, a senior at a Santa Barbara, CA, high school, spends the first season solely focused on gaining this position of power at his school, to the point of unhealthy obsession. Landing the presidency is barely even the first step in his long-term plan to become president of the United States, which also includes getting into Harvard and marrying his long-time girlfriend, Alice (Julia Schlaepfer). But when he finally gets the presidency he's been fighting for, the victory is a hollow one, and it's all because of the relentless drama that precedes it.

There's a moment early on in the first episode of The Politician that filled me with great hope for Ryan Murphy's first foray into the world of Netflix.
Its hero, Payton (Dear Evan Hansen's Ben Platt), barges into the home of his handsome, popular, lacrosse-playing classmate River (David Corenswet) to rip him a new one for daring to run for student body president against him. Though we've only just been introduced to either character, and have barely begun to scratch the surface of their complex personalities, Payton casually mentions that he and River have slept together. Or, perhaps "casually" isn't the right word - Payton practically spits this revelation at River, though the latter barely reacts.
It made me excited for what was presumably to come - a story about Payton and River falling in love against all odds. Or perhaps, told in flashbacks, their previous relationship would...

If you tried to drink every time someone on “The Politician” says “ambition,” you wouldn’t get through a single episode alive. For the steel-jawed characters of “The Politician,” and especially its ostensible hero Payton (executive producer Ben Platt), ambition is the urgent undercurrent of just about every scene, revealing a desperate intensity that never lets up. Ambition is what drives them to be smarter, more ruthless, more removed. It’s what keeps them dissatisfied with everything they already have — for better and, more and more frequently, for worse.
It’s not altogether shocking that ambition is also the driving force that brought its creative team back together. For the first project for Netflix, Ryan Murphy turned to Brad Falchuck and Ian Brennan, his former collaborators on a show whose characters palpably ached under the weight of their ambition: “Glee.” Given the thematic similarities between that series and this one,...
