“American Idol” may be a platform for aspiring unknown singers to showcase their talent outside of their bedrooms, but some contestants may have an advantage over others: being born into famous families.
Season 21 has already shown several so-called “Nepo Babies” — contestants with ties to the entertainment business — competing for the crown, including Kaya Stewart, daughter of Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics (pictured).
“With all your different opportunities and connections and stuff, how did you even land on ‘American Idol?’” Judge Katy Perry asked before her audition.
It’s a fair question, but “nepo babies” competing on “American Idol” is nothing new. In the past, the offspring of parents with varying backgrounds from music, acting, sports, and politics have all found their way in front of the judges.
Actor Jim Carrey’s daughter, Jane, earned a golden ticket in season 11; Aretha Franklin’s granddaughter, Grace, auditioned last season; and Lara Johnston,...

Is it too early to predict that we’ve already found the next American Idol? Because Sunday’s episode, just the second week of the show’s 20th season, definitely introduced at least two major contenders.
Let’s start with this week’s Platinum Ticket recipient, 17-year-old Kenedi Anderson, who blew Katy Perry’s mind with a piano-based reinvention of Lady Gaga’s “Applause.” The performance was heavily promo’d, but no truncated tease could have done it justice. Not only did Anderson completely reimagine the song in her own ethereal style, but her voice is absolutely insane and her instincts are spot on.

Well, guys, we did it. After five long, emotionally manipulative weeks, the American Idol Season 19 auditions have come to an end — and no one is more tired than Katy Perry’s cow-print suit. (Rest easy, old friend. Your me-moo-ry will live on forever.)
Let’s start with Sunday’s surprise guest stars, which ultimately yielded polar opposite results: First, Season 18 finalist Francisco Martin dropped by to support his brother (and plug his new single), joining him in harmony for a performance of Season 17 runner-up Alejandro Aranda’s “10 Years.” (Yes, synergy!) “Between Catie Turner and Alejandro Aranda, I’ve really seen a spot for me here,” says Julia Gargano, a 22-year old college student from Staten Island, New York hoping to become the next “American Idol.” “I consider myself a songwriter. At age 8 I started taking piano lessons and that’s where the singer-songwriter part of my life began. I can’t picture myself doing anything else. Now Gargano is one of seven artists in the running to become the Season 18 winner.
Gargano soared when she reached the Top 20, singing “Human” and earned a spot in the Top 11. In the “Homeward Bound” episode she took on a Billy Joel classic with “New York State of Mind” and once again felt the love from viewers who voted her into the Top 7. For her “Disney/Mother’s Day” double, Gargano performed “Beauty and the Beast” and “Sweetest Devotion” in hopes of being voted into the finale.

Simon Cowell will likely forever hold the title of everyone’s favorite “American Idol” judge, admired for his brutal honesty in accessing pop-star wannabes with their unearned bravado and screechy lack of vocal skills. No other judge could ever deliver such scathing put-downs like, “It says here you work as a wedding singer? How many ended in divorce” and “I’m not being rude, you were that bad, honestly. I mean my pen has got more charisma.”
But after Fox canceled the show in 2016, a new day dawned for “Idol” when ABC revived the popular reality show that originally launched in 2018. The tone of the show shifted a bit with a new panel of judges who all were accomplished performers in their own right. Instead focusing on trashing hopefuls, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan act more like advocates for the contestants, giving them advice, allowing them to evolve...

On the first two episodes of the 18th season of “American Idol” it seemed that judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan were hellbent to find a fully formed artist with musicianship, a great voice and a sack full of fresh original songs.
In other words, they are looking for the next Alejandro Aranda, the then-24-year-old dishwasher from Pomona, Calif., who was the runner-up last year. His artistry and unique sound overshadowed that of the winner of Season 17, bayou boy Laine Hardy, 18, who followed the usual protocol of covering well-known tunes done by big-name talents.

After just two episodes of the 18th season of “American Idol,” the reboot of the long-running reality show is still pretty much still a “karaoke show,” despite the ascendancy and worship of last year’s runner-up Alejandro Aranda, then 24. He arrived on the show as a fully formed artist with a catalog of wonderful self-penned songs, the ability to play guitar and piano and a truly hypnotic singing style.
Yes, that is far different from the reign of Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. They couldn’t wait to mold and shape the talents of the winners they chose, including forcing them to release an often mediocre new song penned by others as their first single.

Though it was initially expected to comprise nine episodes, Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star have wrapped up their epic docuseries, The Beautiful World Of Jeffree Star, with seven total installments. The feature-length season finale, which dropped on Friday, clocked in at roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes.
The briefer-than-anticipated episode count initially left some fans nonplussed -- especially because the trailer for the series comprised scenes from Dramageddon 2.0 -- a so-coined event in the beauty community involving the explosive friendship dissolution between Tati Westbrook and James Charles. However, after Dawson's Conspiracy Collection hit shelves and sold out -- the creation of which was chronicled in Beautiful World -- Dawson appeared in a disheveled Instagram Live where he discussed his uncertainty about how to proceed with the series, expressing concern about dredging up old drama.
In the end, Dawson did briefly address Dramageddon -- though with surface-level treatment in which he showcased his...

Back on May 21, Maddie Poppe became the latest addition to the “American Idol” winners list after a nation-wide audience voted for the singer-songwriter over Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Gabby Barrett. Now, five months later, Poppe released her second single on October 26 titled “Keep On Movin’ On” and performed it with her trusty guitar during “Live with Kelly and Ryan.” In the live video (watch below), Poppe’s former “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest makes the introduction alongside Kelly Ripa.

Catie Turner, the 17-year-old contestant who stole our hearts in her first audition for the American Idol reboot - where she performed an original song titled "21st Century Machine" - immediately hooked us with her voice and quirky, honest self. During the show's finale, the recently eliminated and undeclared fan-favorite got the chance to sing on stage with none other than judge Katy Perry. The song? Perry's "Part of Me." The viewers? Well, shook.

We laughed. We cried. We laughed some more. Thanks, Katy Perry!
The “American Idol” finale may have been a little lackluster in terms of star power, but the judge in the middle seat — when she could endure sitting in it for more than a minute — more than made up for it. Whether it was begging Bachelorette contender Becca Kufrin for her hand — and a chance to compete on the ABC show — or spinning herself silly after the revelation that Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie Poppe are now a couple, or mock fawning over hottie Trevor Holmes, who showed up again in a cute video sendup of Richle’s “Hello” with Ada Vox and Noah Davis, between Perry’s snappy retorts, her physical comedy or her pop culture know-how, there was not a dull moment.

The winner of season 16 of “American Idol” will be revealed at the end of the May 21 results show. The three finalists are Gabby Barrett, Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie Poppe. They will open the two-hour telecast with a performance of “Meant to Be” with Bebe Rexha. This marks a return to “idol” for Rexha.
