The first instalment in a new Strangers trilogy arrives in theaters this weekend, and the reviews have been pretty merciless so far, with one critic going so far as to call the home invasion slasher "one of the worst" horror films they've ever seen.
With 53 verdict counted, The Strangers: Chapter 1 currently sits at an abysmal 13% on Rotten Tomatoes.
We're not sure why anyone would have been expecting very much from this after what might honestly go down as the worst trailer of the year (see below), but it's fair to say the majority of critics were less than enthusiastic about what sounds like a beat-by-beat rehash of the original.
Check out some reactions below.
The Strangers Chapter 1 might be one of the worst horror remakes I’ve seen in a long time.
Boring, uninventive, and painfully sterilized. Really makes you wonder why bother remaking this movie if you’re just...

Then one night local girl Katie Wells (Rowan Robinson) mysteriously disappears. The town barely has time to register her absence before she reappears the next day, apparently safe and sound. A few familiar faces are missing from Call the Midwife Season 12. The latest season of the long-running BBC drama recently landed on Netflix in the U.S., which means that some fans are just discovering that several beloved characters have left the show. The departures include Fenella Woolgar, who played the cheerful nun Sister Hilda.
Sister Hilda isn’t in ‘Call the Midwife’ Season 12
Woolgar joined the Call the Midwife cast in season 8, which aired in 2019. Her character, Sister Hilda, arrived at Nonnatus House in 1964, and she quickly became an integral part of the close-knit group of nuns and midwives.
Before she joined the religious order, Sister Hilda served in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force during World War II. During that period in her life, she lived in London’s East End. When she returned to the neighborhood years later as a midwife, she was shocked by the changes she saw.

During “Polite Society,” writer-director Nida Manzoor’s boisterous, shrewdly funny and altogether wonderful coming-of-age action-adventure, you might try to recall the last time you’ve seen a young female on the big screen with as much fire in her belly as Ria. Was it the football-loving and tradition defying Jess in “Bend it Like Beckham,” the precocious rebel Marjane in “Persepolis,” the all-female trash metal stars of the recent documentary “Sirens” or the real-life Syrian sisters Yusra and Sarah Mardini in “Swimmers”?
While the lead Pakistani character of “Polite Society”—a die-hard martial arts enthusiast played by a fierce Priya Kansara—isn’t an existing hero based on a real-life story of courage, her defiant spirit is so lovingly and precisely defined by Manzoor that you unreservedly believe in her when Ria claims: “I am the fury!”

A devil-may-care approach in terms of plotting meets a careful attention to crafting detail in this riotous debut from Nida Manzoor. It’s a coming-of-age film with kick-ass moves and a spirit so punk-minded it powers past any questions you may have about plausibility.
Teenager Ria lives with her elder sister Lena (Ritu Arya) and her parents (ex-EastEnders regular Shobu Kapoor and Jeff Mirza). Ria spends her days hanging out with her mates Alba (Call The Midwife’s Ella Bruccoleri) and Clara (Seraphina Beh) and dreaming of becoming a stunt woman like her idol Eunice Huthart (a real-life artist who doubled for Angelina in Tomb Raider among other jobs).
Ria and Lena are tight, with the older sibling often being enlisted to shoot some of Ria’s stunt moves - including a particularly tricky spin kick she’s been working on, if only...

For her first feature, We Are Lady Parts creator Nida Manzoor crafts the highly entertaining action/adventure/sci-fi hybrid Polite Society that explores what happens when traditional values and modern sensibilities clash to thrilling effect.
In Polite Society, Priya Kansara plays the strong-willed Ria – a Pakistani high schooler who wants nothing more than to become a stunt woman, a profession that her parents aren’t exactly keen about her pursuing after she graduates. Ria’s older sister Lena (Ritu Arya) is also something of an anti-traditionalist too, as she recently dropped out of art school due creative frustration and has been trying to figure out what’s next. The sisters end up at a hoity-toity party due to their mother Fatima’s (Shobu Kapoor) desire to fit in with all the other moms in their community where Lena is introduced to pretty boy Salim (Akshay Khanna), who is on the hunt for a wife.

Polite Society, written and directed by Nida Manzoor, moves like a supersonic jet. That’s one of the best things about the picture. Telling the coming-of-age story of Ria Khan (Priya Kansara), a young woman determined to become a stunt performer, the filmmaker establishes a brash, bold style early and often. Big performances, big camera moves, big editorial choices, big music cues! As the pace quickens, the swings grow larger and larger.
Ria’s best friend is her big sister Lena (Ritu Arya), recently back home in London after dropping out of art school. Ria spends most of her time hanging out with two buds, attempting to stand up to her school bully (Shona Babayemi), and doing her damndest to get the attention of a real-life stunt performer whom she idolizes. Lena helps Ria film social videos of her doing stunts. All of this falls apart when Lena falls in love with Salim,...

Not that long ago, the Disney Channel meant kids’ cartoons and shows about toothy pre-teens with crossover pop careers. Now, Disney+ (Hulu in the US) has a comedy series featuring a character named Jizzlord, and nothing means anything anymore. The term ‘Disney Adult’ may currently describe the kind of person who gets married in a Prince Eric wig on a cruise ship, but if this trend continues, we’re going to need it back.

Sometimes when things fall apart, you've got to kick a little butt. That's message behind Focus Features's "Polite Society," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 21. Focus Features released the trailer for the action comedy on Jan. 18, and it's all about Ria Khan (Priya Kansara), a teenage girl in London who's obsessed with becoming a professional stunt woman. But when Lena announces that she has given up on art, is getting engaged to a guy Ria thinks is a "smarmy wanker," and is moving to Singapore immediately after the wedding, Ria is worried that something much deeper is going on - and thinks she's the only action hero who can save her sister. Ria Khan is “the fury,” or so she repeatedly claims, in Polite Society, an absolutely bonkers action-packed comedy from writer/director Nida Manzoor (We Are Lady Parts). Ria’s a schoolgirl with big dreams and no filter in Manzoor’s wild and crazy feature film directorial debut.
Don’t mess with the Khan sisters or Ria (Priya Kansara) will unleash hell. Or at least she’ll try her damnedest. She’s got her mind set on becoming a stuntwoman, even though her kicks miss more often than they connect. Never mind that her incredibly patient Pakistani parents aren’t supportive of her chosen profession or that her teacher tries to squash her dreams by suggesting she’s more suited to become a doctor. The horror! Nothing will keep Ria from her chosen profession.
Fortunately, her...

London teen Ria Khan (Priya Kansara) desperately wants to be a stuntwoman. Her family and teachers don't take her seriously — they'd rather her follow the expected path of becoming a doctor — but she's devoted: She makes martial arts videos in her backyard and writes (unanswered) emails to her idol, a world-famous stuntwoman named Eunice, asking for advice. Ria is convinced two things are destined to happen: she will achieve her goal, and her older sister Lena (Ritu Arya) will become an artist. But Lena has dropped out of art school, which concerns their mother's overbearing circle of aunties, led by the ultra-wealthy Raheela Shah (Nimra Bucha).
When the Shahs invite the Khans to a fancy soiree at their mansion to celebrate Eid, Ria quickly realizes the true reason for the invitation: Raheela's handsome son, Salim (Akshay Khanna), is an eligible bachelor on the hunt for a wife. Ria is disgusted,...

If “Polite Society” were a Jane Austen novel, a big wedding would be the happiest of endings, but in the eyes of the film’s feisty teenage protagonist, Ria Khan (Priya Kansara), watching her older sister Lena (Ritu Arya) trade her art career for a husband feels like Game Over. If Lena can’t make it as a painter, what hope is there for Ria, who dreams of becoming a stuntwoman? That’s the engine driving writer-director Nida Manzoor’s rowdy feature debut, which channels everything from Sergio Leone to “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” in its wild and frequently outrageous route to sparing Lena the indignity of an (almost) arranged marriage.
Bringing irreverent pop culture mojo to a middle-class British South Asian family story, “Polite Society” packs much of the same appeal that made “Bend It Like Beckham” such a hit two decades earlier, plus a twist that brings...

The Khan sisters aren’t just big dreamers; they’re big doers. Well, sort of. The British-Pakistani siblings — including oldest sister Lena (Ritu Arya) and baby sib Ria (breakout star Priya Kansara) — have always strived to carve their own path in the world, but as Lena’s dreams of being an artist start to wane, Ria’s aspirations to become a world-class stunt performer take on a much more important cast. Mostly, she’s gotta turn her love of ass-kicking into something that can do nothing less than save her entire world.
