Ever since its release in 2022, Spy x Family has been a popular anime series adapted from Tatsuya Endo’s action-comedy manga series. The story follows a master spy known by his codename, Twilight, who acts to maintain peace between rival nations whose tensions recall the Cold War. To achieve his latest mission of getting close to a reclusive far-right leader through his sons, Twilight must pose a family man and enrol a child into the same private school known as the Eden Academy.
To accomplish this, Twilight poses as a psychiatrist named Loid Forger and presents the image of a happy family by adopting a young orphan girl named Anya, while also marrying City Hall employee Yor Briar.

Popular manga characters receive their first film adaptation as they seek out a villainous colonel and an elusive dessert, brought off with great style by director Takashi Katagiri
After a successful TV adaptation, the popular characters of the bestselling manga Spy x Family are ready for their big screen closeups. Directed by Takashi Katagiri from an original story, this highly entertaining film maintains the ingenious blend of espionage escapades and slice-of-life shenanigans that has made the series a smash hit, all while expanding its set pieces to a more spectacular scale. To achieve this delicate balance between comedy, suspense and action thrills is no easy feat and for the most part, the film accomplishes this mission well.
The lovable Forger trio of spy papa Loid, assassin mama Yor, and telepathic daughter Anya, are swiftly reintroduced; this fake family embarks on a hilarious adventure involving an elusive dessert, stolen negatives and a villainous colonel.

Action shonen anime dominates the medium, for better and worse. Every big franchise eventually gets an original movie — or a dozen. "One Piece" has 15, "Dragon Ball" 24, and "Naruto" has 11.
The problem is that these mostly tend to be non canonical movies without much consequence. They are cute, fun adventures, for sure. Still, they are more concerned with providing fan service than providing substance. The best ones are those that manage to make the most out of their non canonical status and present truly experimental movies, like the best of the "One Piece" films.
Now comes "Spy x Family: Code White," a movie based on one of the most popular manga, published in Shonen Jump magazine — which makes this technically a shonen anime movie, regardless of its actual genre. The premise is simple. Loid is a spy, Yor is an assassin, and together they fake a family for convenience (and for...

“Spy x Family Code: White” is a fun, accessible jumping-on point for anyone unfamiliar with the “Spy x Family” anime, or the manga on which it’s based. However, in slowing down to let newcomers catch up, it tends to lack momentum. The plot isn’t strictly tied to the the comic or the show’s two seasons (it’s yet to be renewed for a third), but it picks up with the same basic premise: a found family with secret lives and abilities, which they keep guarded from one another, while a non-specific political conflict looms on the horizon.
Released theatrically in both dubbed and subtitled versions, the standalone film plays like an extended filler episode of a sitcom steeped in verbal misunderstandings, though that isn’t always a bad thing. From “Cooking Papa” and “Food Wars: Shokugeki No Soma” to “Delicious in Dungeon” and every Ghibli film in between, anime has a rich history of wholesome food porn. Yet even so, it might still come as a surprise to some fans of “Spy x Family” that the show’s first theatrical outing would revolve so heavily around a cooking competition.
It’s not just any cooking competition, mind you. After it looks like spy extraordinaire Loid Forger might be taken off Operation “Strix,” the mission that first brought his found family together, he decides to help his adopted daughter Anya win a coveted prize at Eden Academy, thereby ensuring that the Forgers can stay together for at least a little bit longer. The ever-perceptive Loid quickly realizes that the key to victory lies in making the principal’s favorite meal, a rather “elegant” pastry named Melemele. And so off the...

With spring break simmering to 8% K-12 on break, and 1% colleges off, it’s a hodgepodge at the weekend box office until 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes arrives to an expected $50 million-plus opening during the second weekend of May.
A24’s Civil War, which currently counts $27M through Monday after $1.9M yesterday, will need to defend its No. 1 flag from Universal’s Radio Silence-directed genre title Abigail. Both are looking at around $12M apiece. Still, that would rep a 53% decline for Alex Garland’s dystopian, divided America thriller, which would be excellent. Civil War will share Imax auditoriums with Sony/Crunchyroll’s anime Spy x Family Code: White as well as the Nathaniel Kahn-directed documentary Deep Sky.
‘Abigail’
Booked at 3,300 theaters, Abigail stars Melissa Barrera and the late Angus Cloud as well as Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, William Catlett, Kevin Durand as a bunch of kidnappers who opt to abduct 12-year old ballerina Abigail (Alisha Weir). She’s the daughter of a powerful underworld figure, and her ransom is for $50M.
In an isolated mansion, the captors, whose job it is to watch her, start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl. The pic will share Plf screens with Lionsgate’s Guy Ritchie-directed The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which is looking at mid single-digits, as well as Spy x Family Code: White, which is looking to do about the same.
Abigail, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, starts previews on Thursday at 5 p.m. Men and women 18-34 are the sweet spot. Reviews for the R-rated pic are currently at 82% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
A $6M-ish opening for the Ritchie movie is in the same realm as The Covenant. The R-rated Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare received an A- CinemaScore during last weekend’s sneaks and will preview at 6 p.m. Thursday before going wide in 2,700 theaters.
‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’
The Ritchie-written title is based upon recently declassified files of the British war department and inspired by true events. Pic tells the story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials including author Ian Fleming. The top-secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks, goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly “ungentlemanly” fighting techniques. Ultimately their audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British Sas and modern black ops warfare. Henry Cavill, Eiza González, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Henry Golding and Cary Elwes star. Some exhibitors believe the movie has a shot at blowing past its estimates. Rt reviews are at 81% fresh.
‘Spy x Family Code: White’
Spy x Family Code: White is booked at 2,000 engagements with 4 p.m. Thursday previews going in 1,870 sites. Pic will be available in both Japanese with English subtitles and dubbed in English. The Takashi Katagiri-directed movie is the first film installment of the TV series, here with a stand-alone story featuring secret agent <Twilight>, his deadly assassin wife Yor, and their telepathic adopted daughter Anya in an all-new mission. Pic is based on the Harvey- and Eisner Award-nominated manga written and illustrated by Tatsuya Endo. The TV series debuted on April 9, 2022, with the first two seasons available to watch on Crunchyroll.

There are so many directions that a Spy x Family could pursue. The ongoing anime has a deeply versatile story structure that allows it to indulge in diverse missions so that the series always feels fresh. Accordingly, it’s seriously surprising to see Code: White function as a covert cooking anime movie.
It’s the type of story that audiences would expect to see in a Food Wars! or Toriko feature film, but not Spy x Family. It’s also an ambitious approach to Spy x Family’s first movie that hedges its bets and is too cautious to disrupt the status quo. Code: White is still rich in classic Spy x Family elements, even if it amounts to an empty meal.

As a fan of fighting games, Tekken 8 was pretty high on my video games of 2024 list. I’ve been playing the games since the very beginning, back when there were only eight characters until you unlocked the rest. Tekken has always been a unique franchise to me, from the ongoing Mishima family “let me grab my popcorn” mess to the fact that some of the lore is unapologetically bizarre. You’d think the multiple bear characters were a joke, but not only are they part of the ongoing story, they aren’t even the weirdest fighter you can pick — and I love every minute of it. “Spy x Family” is an action comedy manga released in 2019 and adapted into an anime in 2022, instantly becoming a global hit. (Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
The family sitcom is a staple of American television, a genre that has drawn audiences for decades by poking fun at daily life and the perceived idea of the nuclear family. It's no wonder that the biggest American animated shows are sitcoms, like "The Simpsons," "Family Guy," and even "Rick and Morty."
I firmly believe that the easiest anime to recommend to people not already familiar with the medium are those that are in some way recognizable to them. Shows like "Attack on Titan" start out as a more messed up "The Walking Dead," and "Monster" essentially operates like an animated prestige TV drama. Also on that list is "Spy x Family" (like in "Hunter x Hunter" the x is silent), a show that embraces the absurdity that makes anime special...

They were deemed cool and confident, and they were seen as role models for those living in the suburbs. Los Billis took place in a time before the Columbian and American governments waged war against drugs and its biggest kingpin in the world, Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaveria. It was the time when the world was still living under the fear of the Cold War, and teenagers were on the lookout for ways to appear cool by donning Levi jeans, picking unnecessary fights, and listening to American rock music on the Walkman. Hiding one’s identity using an alias, a made-up family, is a commonplace trade secret in the world of espionage. In order to infiltrate and extract confidential information, more often than not, spies have to live a dual life by creating a persona, an entire world of their own, to deceive the public. But even this well-known backdrop, tinged with supernatural elements, intelligent comedic flair, subtle commentary on social expectations, and usual Shounen zaniness, can create a unique and memorable narrative, as shown through Mangaka Tetsuo Endo’s seminal work Spy x Family. It is of little surprise the immense popularity of the manga has been followed by similar appreciation in the anime adaptations of the series as well.
With equal parts action, thrill, humor, and heart, Spy x Family veers more towards the slice-of-life genre of manga than traditional shounen ventures. Revolving around the unlikely family members consisting of protagonist trio Twilight,...

Amid concerns about a so-called “Day of Hate” reportedly planned tomorrow by White Supremacists and other fringe groups, Jessica Seinfeld took to her social media to ask friends of the Jewish community to “counter this idea with their love and light.”
Seinfeld suggests joining a Jewish friend at synagogue for Shabbat in order to “fill our sanctuaries with courage and friendship.” Another idea she suggests is to “invite yourself to a Shabbat meal,” or “call or text your Jewish friends and simply say ‘I’m here.’ “
