The picturesque animation of Jacob and Wilhelm seeing their little sister play with dolls marks the beginning of a classic folktale based on siblings. In this variation, Hansel and Gretel are students at a school, and the witch doesn’t want to eat them and turns out to be a good woman. Nonetheless, she still offers them her confections, so that should be enough information for you before I jump in to discuss the third episode of The Grimm Variations.
Spoiler Alert
How do Hansel and Gretel come across the witch?
Hansel and Gretel live and study in a private school run by a couple whom the kids address as Papa and Mama. The couple seems to take good care of the kids while also instilling manners and discipline in them at the same time. The kids have a set routine, which includes waking up, going to the cafeteria for breakfast,...

The marketing campaign for Neon’s upcoming horror movie Longlegs isn’t getting any less strange, with a new poster and a video teaser arriving in our inbox this afternoon.
The poster is dubbed “Sweet: Part One” while the video is labeled “Sweet: Part Two,” and the latter features some new clips from the film along with a cryptic poem of sorts…
So close the crimson and clover
All gone now to the edge
Where the black begins
The long forked tongue hisses
This mysterious teaser seemingly refers to Maika Monroe’s character as “daughter of the seventh she,” and also notes: “Ever since she was a little girl she wanted to catch a killer.”
Stranger still is an “application process” that’s included with today’s press email. “The application process consists of the below-listed steps,” the email reads. “You must successfully complete each step of the process.” Let...

The Alien Report: "The Alien Report follows "The Abductee" (Braxton Hale), an everyday American who finds himself hijacked by extraterrestrial beings and taken on a terrifying journey of self-preservation, running afoul of classic "grey aliens", disturbing human-et hybrids, and the U.S. government's shady Men in Black. Based on countless documented reports made by self-proclaimed abductees, The Alien Report is a meticulous, straight-faced look at what an real-life alien abduction would be like, from the perspective of first-person cameras.
The Alien Report has screened at festivals worldwide, winning awards in the U.S., UK, Australia, and Brazil. Shot on iPhone and GoPro cameras as a non-traditional narrative composed of re-assembled found footage, the picture plays out as both a sci-fi thriller and first-person documentary. It is the intended first chapter in a trilogy of films about extraterrestrial abductions.
The Alien Report was directed by Patrick Donnelly and produced by Kevin Schroeder and Michael Sell.

Well, here's news you don't see every day.
Director Scott Derrickson and screenwriter C. Robert Cargill, the same horror filmmaking duo that gave us "Sinister" (read /Film's oral history here) and "The Black Phone," have confirmed their next project: "The Night of the Hunter," adapted from the 1953 novel by Davis Grubb. The project is being developed at Universal.
"The Night of the Hunter" follows Harry Powell, a faux-preacher, and misogynistic serial killer, in the 1930s Ohio River Valley. After Powell is arrested for stealing a car (from one of his brides-turned-victims), his cellmate is Ben Harper, who's on death row for armed robbery/homicide. Harper hid the stolen money in his daughter Pearl's doll, intending it to be her and his son John's birthright, and took that secret to his grave. Once Powell is walking free, however, he makes his way to the Harper family, seducing Ben's widow Willa so...

We’ve all grown up hearing the classic fairytale. A brother and sister are turned out of their home and sent by their wicked stepmother to survive in the deep, dark woods. The ingenious Hansel leaves a trail of pebbles and breadcrumbs to find the way home, but they eventually fall into the clutches of a sinister witch. While Gretel does get credit for pushing the old witch into the oven before she can roast and eat Hansel, most of the story’s heroism still falls on male shoulders. But what if Gretel was actually the one responsible for the sibling’s survival? What if it’s her courage and fortitude that saves the day while her brother is little more than a burden? Oz Perkins’s nightmarish film turns the classic fairy tale on its head...

Damsel is the kind of Netflix movie that would feel right at home in the 2010s. It may be an original fairy tale of sorts, but it pulls from the same kind of girl power feminism that drove the “edgy” retellings of popular fairy tales like Snow White and the Huntsmen and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 10 years ago.
On the surface, Damsel might seem like a fresh and exciting take on a centuries old story. A young woman (Elodie) marries a prince to help her kingdom, but instead of living happily ever after, she gets sacrificed to a dragon and has to fight her way out of its lair. Despite the promise of that premise, the movie itself feels like such a shallow representation of what a story like this could be.

Whenever I get asked to recommend a good horror movie- I immediately take into consideration who I’m recommending it to. The key to a good movie recommendation is to compliment the other person’s tastes and suggest something that will comfortably expand their horizons. It also helps if the movie you’re recommending is criminally underseen for how incredibly well-made it is. Here’s what I mean- In 2020- yes, That 2020- the entire world was affected by unprecedented events that caused the everyday lives of everyday people to dramatically change. One of the many industries that suffered during this time was the Movie Theater industry. It was rough. It was stale. It was fucking Groundhog Day. At first, there were delays- movies just weren’t coming out at all. Then, some that were meant for theaters and Imax ended up going straight to streaming, delays, delays, more delays.

The Unknown, the villain at the viral Willy Wonka Experience is getting their own horror movie, because of course they are. More on the story below.
Only a week after Glasgow’s Willy Wonka Experience went viral, a new horror film centred on The Unknown has been announced. The film will simply be titled The Unknown and will follow a couple who have recently lost their son.
Photos from the experience, including one of The Unknown, spread online like wildfire after the police were reportedly called to the event which left children in tears and parents furious. The event was marketed with highly misleading, AI-generated artwork. The company behind the event, House of Illuminati, have promised full refunds to visitors.
The news of the new horror film comes via Bloody Disgusting, who report that Scotland-based production company Kaledonia Pictures is working on it. The Unknown has bugger all to do...

Apple TV+ has launched the trailer for Noel Fielding-led comedy ‘The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin,’ which premieres globally on March 1st.
The six-episode Apple Original centres on Dick Turpin (Fielding), who sets out on a journey of wildly absurd escapades when he’s made the reluctant leader of a band of outlaws — and tasked with outwitting corrupt lawman and self-appointed thief-taker Jonathan Wilde (Hugh Bonneville).
In this irreverent retelling set in the 18th century, Turpin is the most famous but least likely of highway robbers, whose success is defined mostly by his charm, showmanship and great hair. Together with his gang of lovable rogues, Turpin rides the highs and lows of his new endeavours, including a brush with celebrity, all whilst trying to escape the clutches of the thief-taker.

"You've got the teeth of the hydra upon you." It's finally time. After letting this trailer play in theaters for a month already, Neon has released the teaser trailer for Longlegs online for everyone to watch. It's one of the best modern teaser trailers ever made - a brilliant remix of the Alien text slow title reveal, but this time for an eerie serial killer horror thriller. FBI Agent Lee Harker is assigned to an unsolved serial killer case that takes unexpected turns, revealing evidence of the occult. Harker discovers a personal connection to the killer and must stop him before he strikes again. Longlegs is the latest film from director Oz Perkins - all those creepy teases were leading up to this. The horror film stars Maika Monroe as Lee Harker, Nicolas Cage, Alicia Witt, Blair Underwood, and Dakota Daulby. This is such a disquiting, frightening, captivating teaser -...

Ever since the dawn of the internet, the art of the tease in marketing upcoming films has essentially gone extinct. We're all used to living in a 24/7 entertainment news cycle, where it's easy for the average layman (let alone Hollywood insider) to know which actor has signed a deal to appear in what movie before the thing ever gets made, let alone premiere on cinema screens. Nostalgic cinephiles like myself long for the days when teaser trailers were a regular phenomenon, made almost expressly to announce to general audiences that these movies are coming soon without giving much (or hardly anything) away.
Although the general trend for movie trailers these days is to essentially throw the baby out with the bathwater in terms of cast, plot, big highlight moments, and the like, teaser trailers do still occasionally get made, and it's always a special occasion when these trailers actually, well,...

‘Longlegs’ Teaser Trailer – New Horror Movie from Osgood Perkins Dives into the Nine Circles of Hell
Neon’s mysterious marketing campaign for Longlegs has set the stage for one of the most hotly anticipated trailer reveals of the year, and the wait is finally over this afternoon.
The upcoming serial killer horror movie marks the return of director Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Gretel & Hansel). Nicolas Cage stars alongside Maika Monroe, with Monroe playing an FBI agent and Cage playing a serial killer.
Longlegs is said to be “in the vein of classic Hollywood psychological thrillers.”
This first look at the movie doesn’t tell us much more about it than we already know, instead conveying an unsettling atmosphere that’s loaded up with mysterious visuals. We get several shots of Maika Monroe’s character (FBI Agent Lee Harker), a glimpse of a book exploring the Nine Circles of Hell, and even a person being killed from behind with an axe. Distributor Neon has spent the first few weeks of 2024 teasing one of the horror movies they’ll be unleashing this year, and the campaign has been particularly interesting because they’re not telling us what movie they’re even promoting. Some think it’s the Hunter Schafer-starring Cuckoo, while most believe it’s the Nicolas Cage-starring Longlegs.
Our best guess is that it’s indeed Longlegs, a serial killer horror movie from director Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Gretel & Hansel). Nicolas Cage stars alongside Maika Monroe, with Monroe playing an FBI agent and Cage playing a serial killer.
For what it’s worth, Bloody Disgusting has heard that the official teaser trailer for Longlegs is coming soon, which lends credence to the belief that these teases are also for Longlegs.

The most interesting horror movie marketing campaign of the new year thus far has been for a mysterious upcoming movie from distributor Neon, which kicked off last week with an ultra creepy teaser that got the horror community talking. The viral marketing clip ran just 35-seconds long, beginning with a retro-looking family photo of a mother, father and daughter.
A call to 911 played over top of the photo, with the father explaining to the operator that something has happened to his daughter. “That’s not my daughter,” he says at one point during the chilling call, and the clip ends with what looks to be a crime scene photo. There were also strange symbols throughout the video, which many fans immediately got to work on decoding.
Many horror fans believe the teaser was for Neon’s upcoming horror movie Longlegs, but there’s been no official word from Neon since the teaser dropped last week.

Neon is kicking off the year with an ultra creepy teaser for a mysterious horror movie on their 2024 slate, and we’re excited to share that eerie first look with you this morning.
The catch? We don’t actually know what movie it’s from! Neon is being super secretive about the teaser video, but we can at least present you with a list of strong guesses.
Neon currently has three horror movies in their 2024 lineup, including the Hunter Schafer-starring Cuckoo, which also stars Dan Stevens and Jessica Henwick. Directed by Tilman Singer (Luz), the movie has been shrouded in a bit of secrecy, with plot details under wraps.
And then there’s Longlegs, a hotly anticipated serial killer horror movie from director Osgood Perkins. Nicolas Cage stars alongside Maika Monroe, with Monroe playing an FBI agent and Cage playing a serial killer.

“Familiar” is one of those descriptors critics can twist into a positive or negative connotation. William Brent Bell’s folkloric Lord of Misrule basks in culty Pagan familiarity but not as cheap mimicry. If you’ve seen The Wicker Man, The Ritual, Kill List — I’ll spare you thirty more titles — you won’t be stricken dumbstruck by writer Tom de Ville’s ode to harvest rituals and wretched traditions. Bell’s not rewriting the book on insidious celebrations beneath all the synchronized dances and laughter, and yet, Lord of Misrule is an undeniably atmospheric venture into villages of the damned.

Violent Night hit theaters in December of 2022. It was a surprise hit, grossing a solid $50 million domestically, and another $26 million overseas, on a thrifty $20 million budget. The premise was a “can’t miss” proposition, being about a group of mercenaries that takes a rich family hostage, while Santa Claus (David Harbour) tries to save the day (and believe in Christmas again).Yet, many folks might have missed the movie last year, as by the time it hit Peacock and Blu-ray/DVD, it was January, at which point no one really wants to watch a Christmas movie anymore. With the yuletide season upon us, now’s the perfect time to revisit this holiday action flick.
Now, whenever someone asks me what my favorite Christmas movie is, I have only one answer. Die Hard. The Bruce Willis film has long been at the center of heated debate on it being classified as a holiday film.

Despite how prevalent they are in spooky media, you’d be surprised at how rare it used to be for traditionally recognizable witches to be the main antagonists in scary movies. Sure, we got the eerie crones of the pseudo-documentary Haxan and even a dancing coven in Suspiria, but for the longest time, witches were relegated to humorous stereotypes akin to the Sanderson Sisters rather than anything truly terrifying. It’s only recently that modern classics like The Witch and Gretel and Hansel have made potions and broomsticks scary again, revisiting the disturbing origins of these myths in ways that genre films of the 20th century simply couldn’t handle.
There are a few exceptions to this rule, however, and one of my favorites just so happens to be a bizarre trilogy that dared to ask what would happen if a potion-brewing maniac from the early days of America found himself transported to modern times.

Sharknado has been back in the news this year, since 2023 marks the tenth anniversary of the goofball shark movie’s initial release – so it’s fitting that Sharknado director Anthony C. Ferrante also has multiple new movies making their way out into the world this year. The latest Ferrante joint is the horror film Dante’s Hotel, which is set to be released through the Tubi streaming service this Friday, October 13th. With its premiere just three days off, a trailer for Dante’s Hotel has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
Scripted by Ferrante and William C. Martell, Dante’s Hotel has the following synopsis: When an unknown assailant preys on the patrons of a haunted hotel, an event planner teams up with a mysterious tenant whose dark past is the key to freeing the cursed hotel.

As the first season of Peacock’s John Wick universe spin-off series The Continental comes to an end with the third and final episode Theatre of Pain, viewers can’t help but feel discontent as to how hastily the finale wrapped up the narrative. Previously, viewers learned how Winston’s elder brother, the ‘Nam war vet Frankie Scott, undertook the dangerous mission of stealing the High Table coin press from New York Continental in order to earn a life of freedom with his wife, Yen, inciting the ire of his mob boss and Continental manager Cormac O’Conner in the process. Winston got tangled up in that mess as well, and he had to witness his brother sacrifice his life to save him and Yen. A vengeful Winston decided to take revenge and put an end to the sordid history the Scott brothers shared with Cormac, and in order to do so,...

The highly-anticipated spin-off “The Continental: From the World of John Wick” premiered Friday on a streaming platform some in the industry would find surprising.
What makes the show stand out — apart from its miniseries format, comprised of three movie-sized episodes spread across three consecutive Fridays (a callback to television events of yore) — is the fact that the prequel, spun off from one of the crown jewels of the Lionsgate portfolio, landed on the NBCUniversal-owned streamer rather than on Starz, Lionsgate’s own premiere cable channel and streaming platform.
The question remains: Why?
The show takes place in New York in the 1970s, but exists in the same shared, blood-splattered universe where, decades later, Keanu Reeves’ John Wick would go on a roaring rampage of revenge.
Basil Iwanyk, founder of Thunder Road Films, the production and financing company behind “John Wick” and “The Continental,” said the decision to move the...

Plot: Explore the origin behind the iconic hotel-for-assassins centerpiece of the John Wick universe through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott, as he’s dragged into the Hell-scape of 1970’s New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the hotel’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the hotel where he will eventually take his future throne.
Review: The 2014 debut of John Wick kicked off the most unexpected of movie franchises. Over the following ten years, the Keanu Reeves-led sequels to Derek Kolstad’s original screenplay expanded on the mythology surrounding the global guild of assassins overseen by The High Table. With coins, credos, formal roles, and more, the entire structure of the fictional world fell within and without the confines of hotels known as The Continental. Each locale housed a manager and...

I’ll give “The Continental” this: of all the reasons the “John Wick” prequel frustrates, underwhelms and disappoints, the involvement of Mel Gibson barely manages to rank. That, at least, is a major accomplishment.
The three-part series, subtitled “From the World of John Wick,” was anticipated by a steady stream of red flags: a gap of more than half a decade between the official greenlight and Wednesday’s premiere; the move from Starz, a network owned by franchise studio Lionsgate, to Peacock; the news that Chad Stahelski, the stunt performer turned action auteur, would not direct any episodes, though he retains an executive producer credit. In its final form, “The Continental” bears these misgivings out. The show lacks the star power and visual panache of “John Wick,” and what it adds is directly at odds with the movies’ source of appeal.

Once upon a time, it's not inconceivable Steven Spielberg might have directed "Five Nights at Freddy's" or a film just like it. Recall that the young Spielberg loved terrorizing audiences. His first feature-length directorial effort, the made-for-tv 1971 thriller "Duel," was such an exhilarating blast that it eventually got a theatrical release. Then came his horror-adventure classic "Jaws," followed by the suburban nightmare of "Poltergeist". Hell, from a certain point of view, "Jurassic Park" is sort of like "Five Nights at Freddy's" only with dinosaurs. Sometimes when an entertainment attraction breaks down, the animatronics actually do eat the tourists.
"Five Nights at Freddy's" casts Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, an unassuming security guard who accepts a job keeping watch of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza at night, only to discover the animatronic mascots of the once-prosperous family entertainment center like to come alive and commit murder under the cover of darkness. The Continental: From the World of John Wick is an upcoming crime drama series that serves as a prequel spin-off to the hit film franchise starring Keanu Reeves. The series will explore the origins of the Continental Hotel, a chain of hotels that function as a neutral territory for members of the criminal underworld. The series will focus on a new protagonist, Winston Scott, who becomes the manager of the New York branch of the hotel in the late 1970s.
The series has released a sneak peek of its opening fight sequence, and it is stunning. The clip shows Winston (played by Colin Woodell) and his allies taking on a group of armed thugs in a gritty and stylish action scene that evokes the signature style of the John Wick movies. While not quite abandonware in the traditional sense, Fossil Games’ Abandonware: The Horror Collection looks to scratch that old-school gaming itch (as well as Dread X Collection fans), now that it’s out in Early Access on Steam. Combining nostalgia, retro gameplay and an unsettling atmosphere, Abandonware comes from the developer’s love of horror and true crime.

What starts as a pleasant walking simulator between a brother and his older sister, swiftly turns into the most eerie version of a Hansel and Gretel story that you’ll ever come across. Initially released in April of 2023 across all major platforms, the game is now available on Xbox Game Pass. For us horror fans, Bramble is the gift that keeps giving. Just when you start to think surely you have seen it all, this game delivers a few more gut punches to leave you gasping in disbelief. Back in the 1980s, the term “home video” actually referred to movies that had been transferred to honest-to-goodness analog videocassette tape. Keen-eyed genre mavens would excitedly trawl the aisles of their local emporium, often choosing between titles based on little more than lurid cover art and advertising hype.
One of the premier purveyors of the most cherished low-budget, unabashedly lowbrow entertainments was Charles Band’s Empire Pictures, staffed by a tightly knit “band of outsiders” whose names crop up time and again across the studio’s roster of deliriously enjoyable sci-fi and horror films. Author Chris Van Allsburg brought "Jumanji" into the pop culture zeitgeist back in 1981. The children's book imagined an enchanted board game that transported the dangers of the jungle into the suburban world. A hungry lion, a stampede of rhinos, and a monsoon are just some of the threats that emerge from the game, putting kids smack dab in the middle of a frightening adventure.
"Jumanji" is a favorite among several generations of children, and part of that comes from the blockbuster movie adaptation starring Robin Williams (with his improv skills in check), Bonnie Hunt, and a young Kirsten Dunst back in 1995. The film became quite a sensation on the big screen, making over $262 million at the worldwide box office, and it made the titular game truly larger than life. If you've ever watched "Jumanji" and wished you could have your own version of the board game that has seemingly been circulating for decades,...

Folklore and horror are often two sides of the same coin. Genre filmmakers the world over have either drawn from or created local myths to jangle the nerves of their audience, from “The Wicker Man” in Britain and “The Blair Witch Project” in America to “La Llorona” in Guatemala and “Kwaidan” in Japan. For the latest evidence, look no further than the Philippines and “In My Mother’s Skin” — already picked up by Amazon ahead of its Sundance Mdnight premiere. Writer-director Kenneth Dagatan’s second feature after 2018’s “Ma” (no relation to the Octavia Spencer picture) takes place in the waning months of World War II, as Japan’s occupation of the Philippines is nearing its (un)merciful end. A supernatural horror rife with family ambiguity, anger and self-discovery, Sarah Lasry’s Spell on You (La Verrue) sees the Paris-based director take the confusion and rage of her childhood and combine it with the companionship she found in the world of witches and spells. It’s a narrative which empowers her young protagonist who after being initially horrified by the warts on her nose, through them, learns to harness her own unearthly powers. Spell on You is a creeping dark burgeoning of power where the adults do not rule and an ominous presence is felt right from the seeming normality of the opening scene through to a crescendo of unbalance in its final moments. Ahead of today’s premiere, we sat down...
