Trent Reznor has shared his reflections on the 30th anniversary of Nine Inch Nails’ breakout album, The Downward Spiral, in a post on the band’s official website describing how the seminal project still impacts him.
“Spending too much time looking backwards feels dangerous to me, but this day on the calendar caught my attention,” Reznor wrote in the message. ” Has it really been that long, old friend? I just spent an hour listening to this time capsule of what 28 year old me had to say, and it still excites me and breaks my heart.”
The Nin mastermind concluded the note by encouraging fans to “be kind to yourselves,” adding that he hopes to “see you soon.”
In further celebration of the album’s 30th anniversary, Heavy Consequence spoke with Godsmack singer Sully Erna, Code Orange vocalist Jami Morgan, and Parkway Drive frontman Winston McCall. Watch the video below.

Code Orange were set to embark on a headlining North American tour in February, but have canceled the outing due to guitarist Dominic Landolina’s “serious health issues.”
In addition to the tour — which was set to feature support from Gel, Teenage Wrist, Soul Blind, Spy and Gridiron — Code Orange have also nixed their appearances on the ShipRocked cruise and at the Pulp Summer Slam. In a lengthy message posted to their social media pages, Code Orange revealed that Landolina’s health has been suffering “over the past year.”
The band’s full statement reads as follows:
“It pains us deeply to announce that we are canceling our upcoming headline tour, as well as the ShipRocked cruise / Pulp Summer Slam around it. Our guitarist Dom has been dealing with serious health issues over the past year that have led to his inability to play, perform and live comfortably. While he gritted through our fall performances,...

Code Orange slow things down on their new single, the alt-rock song “Mirror.” The latest track from their upcoming album, The Above, features lead vocals by guitarist-singer Reba Meyers.
While the band is best known for its heavy brand of metalcore and industrial metal, “Mirror” features melodic singing and acoustic guitars.
“This song has a special place in my heart,” stated Meyers in a press release. “To me, it’s the climax of this style of my writing in this band thus far. Take a look in the mirror, are you bored?”
The track is accompanied by a music video featuring the band members surrounded by various animated visuals. It was created by Code Orange’s own audiovisual collective NOWHERE2RUN.
“’Mirror’ is NOWHERE2RUN’s first foray into full music video production from conception all the way to the final edit,” commented singer Jami Morgan. “It’s fitting that...

Two time Grammy-nominated band Code Orange announce today their new album The Above, releasing September 29th via Blue Grape Music!
The first album since their critically acclaimed 2020 Underneath, is self-produced by Jami Morgan and Eric “Shade” Balderose with engineering by Steve Albini.
Accompanying the album announcement, the single and music video for the track “Take Shape” which features guest vocals from Billy Corgan is a throwback to when music videos were at peak importance, combining nostalgia with a modern twist, notes the release.
Inspired by an era where film was at its peak quality, but beginning to give way to the digital era “Take Shape” picks up where “Grooming My Replacement” left off. The protagonist, played by Morgan, escapes his captives, arriving in a technicolor, ‘Truman Show’-esque stage play of reality. Incredible cinematography brings the video through a number of sets and stages arriving at a ‘Vanilla Sky’-inspired roof scene.

Code Orange have announced a new album, The Above, set to arrive September 29th via Blue Grape Music. In advance of its release, the Pittsburgh band has unveiled the single “Take Shape” featuring Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan.
The album marks Code Orange’s follow-up to 2020’s Underneath. The new album was self-produced by band members Jami Morgan and Eric “Shade” Balderose, with engineering by Steve Albini (Nirvana).
“Take Shape” follows the singles “Grooming My Replacement” and “The Game”, which were released earlier this year. While Morgan handles lead vocals throughout the track, Corgan’s distinct voice can be heard around the 2:40 mark in the music video below.
Max Moore co-directed the video along with Morgan, marking the singer’s directorial debut.
“I have been working on the concept for this video, and others to come, for about a year and a half. I am so thankful to have...

Code Orange have returned with two new songs, “Grooming My Replacement” and “The Game.”
The Pittsburgh band has only released a handful of singles and a remix album since 2020’s Underneath, so the two-song drop comes as a pleasant surprise for fans.
“Grooming My Replacement” is a sludgy sub-three-minute hardcore crusher, with thick bass tones, groove-metal riffs, and harsh vocals from frontman Jami Morgan. Meanwhile, “The Game” is less straightforward with its more angular and prog-tinged arrangement, boasting complex rhythms and exaggerated guitar theatrics that recall early Slipknot.
“The bug infested subconscious of a band on the run from its past and future,” said Morgan of the tracks.
The double single is a statement of intent following the 2021 one-off single, “Out for Blood,” which received a mixed response for its electronic-aided nu metal sound. If “Grooming My Replacement” and “The Game” are any indication, Code Orange’s next album could...

The short movie offers an animated narrative that is scored by pieces from the album. The film, helmed by Balderose, was created using Cinema 4D and Octant Render, and took more than 2,000 hours of work over four months.
The movie follows the “Mudman,” whom fans will recognize from the band’s video for “The Mud” off their 2017’s Forever, as he goes “Underneath” to meet his maker in an effort to be cleansed of sin.
