Put Ilana Glazer in a comedy set in New York City and we’ll be sat, no questions asked. For “Babes,” Glazer teamed up to co-write, produce, and star in Pamela Adlon‘s feature directorial debut, a laugh-out-loud coming-of-age buddy comedy following life-long best friends (Glazer and Michelle Buteau) as they navigate different phases of adulthood through the lens of pregnancy. IndieWire caught up with the team and stars behind the film at its New York City premiere on Tuesday, May 14.
Glazer, who co-wrote the film with “Broad City” alum Josh Rabinowitz, reflected on how their creative relationship has evolved since Glazer started comedy at 19 years old and Rabinowitz was just getting out of college. “Growing in comedy with Josh has been such a privilege,” Glazer told IndieWire. “I [was] a few years in and we were just knuckleheads together, like absolute knuckleheads. In 2021, Mdou Moctar told Rolling Stone, “My music is going to become more inspired by revolution.” That promise was truth in advertising. For more than a decade, the Tuareg guitarist/singer-songwriter, who fronts the band that shares his name, has been staking out a space as a radical guitar innovator as well as a fearless spokesman for his strife-riven homeland of Niger. As he asks in Tuareg on the opening track on his band’s excellent new LP, Funeral for Justice, “Dear African leaders, hear my burning question/Why does...

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell starrer Anyone But You was released last year with great anticipation from audiences. The fresh pairing of the two and their sizzling chemistry in the film led it to become a big hit, with many rushing to theaters to celebrate the film. The success of Anyone But You proved that audiences are yearning to see romantic comedies on the big screen.
Sydney Sweeney & Glen Powell in Anyone But You
Despite the film’s success, some people have pointed out some overdone and cringy scenes in the film. Being a loose adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, the film’s director Will Gluck addressed the criticisms and pointed out that all those ‘cringy’ tropes and scenes are directly lifted from Shakespeare’s writing.

Sydney Sweeney is a marketing genius. That’s Glen Powell’s reasoning for how their rom-com “Anyone but You” went from anything but a success to a box-office and VOD hit.
“The two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry. Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry,” Powell told the New York Times. “That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart.”
Sweeney, who also executive produced the film through her Fifty-Fifty Films banner, was directly behind the “Anyone but You” marketing strategy. It included romantic pictures of her and Powell, longing looks on red carpets, and lots of flirting in interviews. And when Powell and his long-term girlfriend broke up, the rumors heated up.

What if Ilana from “Broad City” was pregnant?
If you want to find out, watch the trailer for “Babes,” which Neon released on Thursday.
In the comedy film, which Ilana Glazer wrote with Josh Rabinowitz, the “Broad City” alum plays Eden, a proudly single, thirtysomething New Yorker who gets pregnant from a one-night stand and decides to keep the baby. She relies on her best friend Dawn (Michelle Buteau), a married mother of two, for help. It’s going to be a very challenging process, and not even Dawn is sure Eden will be able to pull it off. The humor seems like a more grown-up version of the chaotic whimsy Glazer brought to “Broad City,” her beloved Comedy Central sitcom.
“Babes” is directed by “Better Things” creator Pamela Adlon in her feature directorial debut. The cast also includes Hasan Minhaj, John Carroll Lynch, Stephan James, Oliver Platt, the Lucas brothers,...

Sometimes, you watch a movie that you find so relatable.
Love's Greek to Me was that kind of movie since many brides-to-be fear their mothers or mother-in-laws taking over the wedding planning. Marina Siris excelled at playing a well-meaning but overly enthusiastic future mother-in-law wanting to incorporate family traditions.
Did her intentions bring her son and Ilana closer together or drive a wedge between them?
In the movie, Torrey DeVitto plays an anthropology professor named Ilana that is interested in digging into the past, except her own. Her parents' divorce left her wary of relationships, even with her long-time boyfriend, Mike (Yannis Tsimitselis).
I just feel like who you marry is the biggest decision you make in life.

With the release of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" in the rearview mirror, James Gunn is going to be more focused on his new job as the co-head of DC Studios. Yes, Gunn is moving from Marvel to DC after nearly a decade and, what's more, he's going to be personally directing "Superman: Legacy," which will be the big coming out party for the new DC Universe he and Peter Safran are putting together. Gunn has also confirmed that several actors he's worked with in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be coming with him to the Dcu.
On Twitter, Gunn was responding to some fan questions and someone asked if any of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" actors will be appearing in "Superman: Legacy." Gunn simply replied "yes," offering no further context whatsoever. Time to speculate recklessly! (Though applying some actual logic as well so we're not letting this devolve into meaningless nonsense.

Does Dr. Kalu’s homecoming portend the return of another storyline from The Good Doctor Season 1?
At the tail end of Monday’s episode, attending surgeon Shaun confronted former peer-turned-pupil Jared about his suturing technique. Their patient, who underwent brain surgery, received eight sutures and suffered a small post-op bleed; per Shaun, Jared should have closed with 10 sutures. But according to Dr. Kalu, he wasn’t responsible for the bleed. It was Dr. Glassman who handled sutures.

David Baddiel brought out an agenda-shifting new documentary called Jews Don’t Count on Monday night (21 November), and it’s kept people talking ever since.
In the show, which aired on Channel 4, the author and comedian argues that antisemitism isn’t considered to be as unacceptable as other forms of discrimination, even among those who are vocal in their support of other minority groups.
Stars including David Schwimmer, Stephen Fry, Sarah Silverman and Miriam Margolyes talk to Baddiel on camera about their experiences of antisemitism in the documentary, which is a follow-up to Baddiel’s 2021 book of the same title.
Many have been praising the programme on Twitter, with actor Eddie Marsan writing: “#jewsdontcount the original book by @Baddiel was absolutely fascinating and the @Channel4 documentary tonight was just as enlightening. Heartbreaking to see my old mate @andynyman sharing the difficulty he’s faced but his last exchange with David was hilarious.

Machine Gun Kelly is drawing on his real-life experiences to play a tormented rock star tangling with addiction and the crushing pressures of fame in the upcoming film "Taurus." The star, who goes by his real name - Colson Baker - in the movie's credits, has been very open about his struggles with addiction and fame in the past, chronicling them in his documentary "Life in Pink." Now, in "Taurus," a movie that he also served as executive producer, composer, and script consultant on, he's dramatizing his story by diving into a new character whose experience appears to be both similar to his own and universal to the archetype of the tortured rock star.
"This is my 14th or 15th movie, but this movie is really close to me," Kelly told a crowd after being honored at Variety's Newport Beach Film Festival Honors brunch on Oct.

You need to start watching “Rap Sh!t” yesterday.
Created by Issa Rae, HBO Max’s new comedy series follows the story and perspective of Shawna (Aida Osman), an aspiring Miami rapper working at a hotel for the time being. When she teams up unexpectedly with Mia (KaMillion), their impromptu freestyle becomes a viral track and the start of a promising collaboration.
“Rap Sh!t” is hyperspecific, laugh-out-loud funny, and deeply engrossing. Osman and the cast shine with Rae’s once-again winning team of writers and directors. It’s a breakout comedy series that isn’t to be missed.
Here are five (more) reasons to watch “Rap Sh!t” on HBO Max.
1. The Artist’s Struggle
In the very first episode, Shawna laments the state of the rising rap community online, a cacophony of influencers, social climbers, and the appearance-obsessed, all notably lacking in the talent she knows she has. “Rap Sh!t...

Television has provided unrealistic standards of life’s many truths for as long as it’s existed — from being able to hang out in a coffee shop during the work day to going on thousands of dates in a single year. But one of the most bothersome standards TV has warped audiences into thinking is what kind of apartment New Yorkers today can realistically afford.
Millions of residents live in the five boroughs, and more people move there every day with dreams of getting a 212 area code and a mailing address in the big city. If only they knew what they were actually in for. The 15 TV characters ranked below lease or own apartments that have become characters in and of themselves, leading New York natives and newbies alike to think they can afford an apartment like Monica Geller’s from “Friends” or Hannah Horvath’s from “Girls.” So, exactly...

The elevator pitch for “The Afterparty” was pretty straightforward. It was everything that came after that got complicated.
“Just murder mystery, where every episode is a different film genre, told in a ‘Rashomon’ kind of style,” Carl Herse, the series’ cinematographer, said in the latest installment of TheWrap’s “How I Did It” video series, sponsored by Apple TV+. “As a cinematographer, it’s like the perfect project to be involved with.”
Co-creator, showrunner and director Chris Miller added that he was excited to juggle a number of different movie styles in the same show.
When an attendee of a high school reunion dies mysteriously, all the guests of the titular afterparty become suspects. Each brings a unique point of view (and genre) to their version of the night’s events. Practically, that meant that certain scenes would be shot multiple times in very different ways.

“I love stand-up,” declares Tiffany Haddish, as she reflects on her 25-year career. “That’s where my heart is.” While Haddish’s acting star has been on the ascendant ever since she lit up the screen in her big-screen breakthrough, Girls Trip, in 2017, she knows she’d always be most comfortable in front of a live audience. “Somebody said to me, ‘What if you were told you could never act again?’ I’d say, ‘As long as I can do stand-up, I’m fine with that.’”
And if she was told she couldn’t do that? “I’d be like, ‘I will fight you, and I’m going to find a way.’ If I have to go to barbershops to tell jokes, if I have to go to the grocery store, to the mall, wherever I got to go to tell jokes, I will make it work.”
