Dave Grohl nearly played a pretty significant role in boygenius’ debut album cycle, and we’re not just talking about that time the trio dressed up as Nirvana. Speaking to NME, Phoebe Bridgers revealed that the Foo Fighters frontman was supposed to join her, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker in the studio while making the record, but he “slept through” their scheduled meeting.
“We have a friend who knows him and toured with Foo Fighters,” Bridgers said. “There was this missed connection where Dave was actually going to come to the studio and play on [the record]. Then he slept through it or whatever, and we didn’t end up meeting.”
Grohl eventually did join boygenius during their Halloween show at the Hollywood Bowl, drumming on “Satanist”. Though Bridgers didn’t specify which song was supposed to have the epic guest feature in the studio, it seems like “Satanist” might’ve been...

Brainstorm Media has picked up Ivan Sen’s crime drama Limbo ahead of its North American premiere at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival on Monday.
The Australian noir, which bowed in Berlin, will be released as part of a partnership between Brainstorm Media and Music Box Films. Limbo has Simon Baker starring as a jaded detective investigating the cold case murder of a local Indigenous girl.
As truths about the murder begin to unfold, Baker’s character gains more insight into the unsolved case from the victim’s fractured family, the surviving witnesses and the reclusive brother of the chief suspect.
“Limbo explores the deeper impact of a crime on an Indigenous family through the eyes of a white policeman. The source of these ideas has largely come from my personal experience, from family members and friends who have been victims of crime. I have witnessed their struggle not only for justice,...

Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker took a stand against anti-lbgtq+ legislation in Tennessee during their Nashville show on June 25. Dressed in full drag, the Boygenius members, who are all openly queer, gave the metaphorical middle finger to Republican Governor Bill Lee.
Decked out in glitter, rhinestones, and hairspray for Pride Month, the band members introduced their drag alter egos: Queef Urban (Bridgers), Shanita Tums (Baker), and Lucille Balls (Dacus). Even the cameraman did their part, wearing a dress while recording the performance from the front row. The show comes just a few months after Tennessee became the first state to pass a ban on public drag shows on March 2.
"I have a lot of anger for the people who have made me feel small."

In the 1980s, it was too easy for a film like Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker to get lost in the horror shuffle. Icons like Freddy and Jason were coming into the world and franchise fever was catching. A “video nasty” label also did little to help this hidden gem find an audience overseas in the U.K. Yet after years of being trapped on VHS under the name of Night Warning, this film finally surfaced on both DVD and Blu-ray and, for a short time, the streaming service Shudder. Cult followers relived what might have felt like a fever dream back in the day, and new fans have since latched on to the film’s sensational excesses.

Sean Baker has made a name for himself as one of the most acclaimed indie filmmakers working today. And when you talk about “indie” cinema, Baker isn’t making small Netflix features. No, he’s still working with shoestring budgets and untrained actors to bring his dramas to life. That said, apparently, Baker is concerned about the direction of American cinema, and he’s worried that it might stifle the potential of younger filmmakers.
Speaking to Kinotico, Sean Baker gave an update about his next film, titled “Anora,” and also took time to talk about the current state of American filmmaking.

When it comes to Crawford, no good deed of Erin's will ever go unpunished.
On Blue Bloods Season 13 Episode 17, Erin tried to find out who was spreading rumors about Crawford, only for her boss to snap at her to stop minding her business. And when Erin completed a case file early as part of a peace offering, Crawford didn't like that either.
Erin may not like attack ads or the mudslinging in today's political campaigns, but if anyone deserves it, it's Crawford. Whether or not her husband is having an affair has no bearing on whether she deserves to be the Manhattan Da, but her attitude toward Erin makes me root for Erin to crush her in the polls.
In one sense, Crawford's irritation was understandable. Erin didn't need to know how true the rumors were to plug any leaks.

If you are frustrated with something that has recently transpired in your life, and you want to get rid of that feeling, watch “Bunker.” But keep another film that you like close to you because you will need it after watching this one. You will be surprised at how it shifts your frustration from that thing to itself. The sheer nonsensical presentation of what could have been a sensible plot makes you want to take refuge in a “bunker” rather than wait for the movie to end. The conviction with which the actors play their parts is what further makes the film more ludicrous and irritating. Without any further criticism, let’s see what happens in “Bunker.”

Most critics have fawned over Boygenius‘s “The Record.” The debut studio album for the supergroup consisting of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker combines the creative powers of three critics’ darlings for one of the most acclaimed collections of the year. And you can add Taylor Swift to the chorus of huzzahs.

This post contains spoilers for the "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" season 2 finale.
With all eyes fixed on "The Mandalorian" and the other live-action "Star Wars" series on Disney+, "The Bad Batch" has quietly emerged as one of the best things to come from a galaxy far, far away since the House of Mouse took over. For as much as the "Clone Wars" spin-off played things too safe in season 1, it had an easier time finding its ethos than other animated "Star Wars" shows. Right out of the gate, "The Bad Batch" proved it was willing to go to dark places in exploring the early days of the Galactic Empire, starting with Clone Force 99's experiences during Order 66.
Things only got bleaker from there, revealing how the Empire emboldened enslavers and other criminals to conduct their business in the daylight, all while civil liberties were being stomped out. Season 2 doubled down on that sentiment,...

Five years after releasing their self-titled EP, the supergroup Boygenius — consisting of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker — dropped their full-length debut studio album, “The Record,” on March 31, 2023. What do critics think of the new collection?
As of this writing most of the notices are glowing. Based on 12 initial reviews, it has a massive MetaCritic score of 91. That’s seven points better than their EP, but expect the Metascore to fluctuate as more journalists give it a spin. Considered individually, Bridgers has a career average of 82, while Baker’s is 84, and Dacus’s is 81. So it appears that they’re even better together than they are apart.

The first season of the HBO TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us (read our review Here) filmed in Calgary, Alberta for twelve months straight, with different areas doubling for the U.S. locations Texas, Wyoming, and Missouri. The first season covered the entirety of the first game’s story, so for season 2 (and beyond) The Last of Us will be telling the story of the video game sequel The Last of Us Part II… and for that, the show needs Pacific Northwest locations. So Deadline reports that The Last of Us is moving its base of operations to Vancouver, British Columbia.
The story of the The Last of Us video game is set years after a fungal plague wiped out much of humanity, transforming most into vicious zombie-like monsters, the story follows Joel, who’s living in a militarized quarantine zone. He has a close relationship with Tess,...

boygenius, the indie supergroup featuring Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker, performed a benevolent act of Sapphic terrorism Thursday night by releasing the film, a visual companion piece to their debut full-length album, the record. Directed by Kristen Stewart, the film is soundtracked by the record’s first three singles: “$20,” “Emily I’m Sorry,” and “True Blue”. Over the course of 14 minutes, the film weaves together three separate dreams by the respective genius, boys, offering up sentimental, slightly surreal vignettes that complement the themes explored each song’s lyrics. Check out our breakdown below.
“$20”
Following a triptych of the three boygenius members each getting ready for bed, Julien Baker awakens in a race car bed, startled as a cigarette-wielding mother crams food into her mouth. As Baker exits the house, she comes upon younger versions of Dacus and Bridgers, with the older versions of all three women entering and exiting the frames.

Boygenius have released The Film directed by Kristen Stewart, a visual counterpart to their first full-length album The Record.
Formed in 2018 by singers Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, the indie rock supergroup followed up their self-titled 2018 EP boygenius with their debut album on Friday (31 March).
Along with the 12-track record, the trio teamed up with Oscar-nominated actor Stewart to produce a 14-minute music video featuring visuals for the songs “$20”, “Emily I’m Sorry”, and “True Blue”.
In the first part of the triptych, a confused Baker is shown hastily running around an unfamiliar rural home where she eventually helps repair an old car.
Bridgers leads the second portion, singing “Emily I’m Sorry” as she stands in the middle of a monster truck arena as trucks drive around her.
The final act follows Dacus as she paints the interior of a house a deep blue. She’s then...

Oscar-nominated “Spencer” star Kristen Stewart directs “The Film,” a trio of music videos for super-group boygenius consisting of Lucy Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers, and Julien Baker. Three singles from boygenius’ “The Record,” out March 31, are featured onscreen with a 14-minute short film helmed by Stewart.
The short film kicks off with “$20” as the band takes a blood oath with the younger versions of themselves. Track “Emily I’m Sorry” follows Bridgers as she stands in front of a monster truck rally, drawing comparisons to “Titane.” The final video “True Blue” shows Bridgers, Dacus, and Baker painting a house a cobalt blue shade before cuddling with each other in the final scene.
Stewart previously helmed the music video for Sage + the Saint’s 2014 single “Take Me Down to the South” and Chvrches’ “Down Side of Me” in 2017. She also was behind short films “Come Swim” and “Crickets” and an episode of Netflix anthology series “Homemade.

“I can’t hide from you like I hide from myself,” sigh boygenius on their keenly anticipated debut album the record. In interviews, the indie supergroup comprising Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus have said that writing songs together has enabled them to be more “earnest” than in their solo material. This doesn’t mean that all 12 songs are straightforward confessionals. Most of them slot together with an appealing combination of simplicity and enigma – like those little puzzle cubes made of three types of wood. All the while, you can hear the careful questioning with which the songwriters have honed one another’s thoughts until they slot smoothly together to become satisfying tactile emotional experiences.
the record opens a cappella with the three women’s voices weaving through the old-timey melody of “Without You Without Them”. (The song was written by Dacus and it seems all three wrote independently...

This post contains spoilers for HBO's "The Last of Us" series.
After a long history of trial and error, HBO's "The Last of Us" series has finally set a new standard for the live-action video game adaptation. For the most part, it achieved a key balance between faithfully honoring the source material while also making necessary changes to fit the new medium of prestige television, allowing for both versions of this story to stand on their own with distinct strengths and weaknesses.
One specific way the show honors the source material is something we'd actually like to see become a norm — while "The Last of Us" series had new actors step into the roles of Joel Miller, Ellie Williams, and the survivors they meet on their apocalyptic adventure, Mazin and Druckmann also made space for the game's original performers to take on new roles in the show as well. Adam Cole and Britt Baker are used to the spotlight as two of the most popular stars in All Elite Wrestling. Yet, opening up their lives outside the ring for new TBS unscripted series Aew: All Access was a different animal. Cameras follow the power couple along with fellow wrestlers Tay Melo, Sammy Guevara The Young Bucks, Saraya, Wardlow, Eddie Kingston, and owner Tony Khan to give viewers an unprecedented peek behind the curtain. During filming, Cole (real name Austin Jenkins), and Baker faced a challenging end of 2022. Cole contemplated if he would ever wrestle again, following two serious concussions in the space of three weeks. This weighed on him physically and mentally as well as his concerned girlfriend. Baker still somehow had to focus on her own career wrestling and then getting off the road to see patients where she’d fill cavities and promote the importance of flossing.

A year ago, Beat the Devils author Josh Weiss introduced the world to Morris Baker, an L.A. police detective living in an alternate history 1950s in which Joseph McCarthy was president. All sorts of things are worse under McCarthy, with hatred and paranoia at the forefront of America. Now the book has spawned a sequel that delves more into the Hollywood of an imagined past.
Sunset Empire arrives Tuesday, and finds Morris Baker living as a private investigator seeking to solve a missing person’s case as the Korean War rages on. The missing person? Henry Kissinger.
Morris Baker is personal for Weiss, who loosely based the character off of his late grandfather, a Holocaust survivor.
“While the world of Morris Baker takes place in an alternate timeline, the core takeaway is how blind hatred endures via endless cycles that we as a species seem doomed to repeat until the end of time,...

Music history is full of supergroups, but there’s never been one like boygenius, which is why the label doesn’t do them justice. They’re simply a world-beatingly great band, with three of the most brilliant singer-songwriters in the game. Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus all came into boygenius with their own totally distinct styles, not to mention their own hardcore audiences, teaming up with a communal pass-the-mic spirit. They’ve finally dropped their long-awaited full-length debut with The Record — but it’s even better than everybody had hoped.

Spring is finally here, though you wouldn't know it from the snow flurries currently battering my house. Fortunately, there are plenty in the way of options to choose from, should you find yourself, like me, looking for something you can stream from the comfort of your home while you wait for the weather to get its act together. Or perhaps you don't really do the whole "leaving the house" thing very much, even when it is nice and sunny outside. Believe me, I get it, my fellow creatures of the dark.

Gabriel Luna played Tommy, the younger brother of Pedro Pascal’s character Joel, in the first season of the HBO TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us (read our review Here), and he is expected to return – and have more to do – in The Last of Us season 2. Speaking with Variety, Luna said viewers can expect to see Tommy experience peaks and valleys, and undergo a de-evolution, over the course of The Last of Us season 2.
The first season of The Last of Us covered the events of the first video game in its entirety, so season 2 (and beyond) will be based on the sequel video game, The Last of Us Part II.
Variety reminds us that in season 1, Tommy “joined the Firefly rebels and lives in a safe, civilized settlement in Jackson, Wyoming”. He is “settled down, married to his wife Maria (Rutina Wesley), and...

How do people, even members of the same family, deal with their grief differently? That’s the question that The CW‘s All American is seeking to tackle in the episodes following the death of Coach Billy Baker (Taye Diggs).
After spotlighting Billy’s wife Laura (Monet Mazur) and his daughter Olivia (Samantha Logan), Monday night’s episode hones in on how his son Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) is handling the loss of his father — the man he looked up to most.
“You’re gonna see him struggle with certain things that Billy left behind that maybe Billy wasn’t able to finish…and he will continue to be there for others who are still hurting,” Behling told Deadline, adding: “You’re gonna see that throughout the rest of the season.”

The Rolling Stones are one of the greatest classic rock bands by almost any measure. They won over millions of fans, but some fellow musicians hate The Rolling Stones. Their unbelievable career span, run of great albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and multiple No. 1 hits don’t mean much to other artists who couldn’t stand Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, and crew.

The musicians who hated The Rolling Stones clearly didn’t hide their disdain for the band’s music. Neither did Jagger and Richards. After more than 60 years as a group, the two lifelong members hated some of the music they made together.
Both Richards and Jagger hate Their Satanic Majesties Request.

The original Joel Miller shows up in HBO's adaptation of "The Last of Us" — just not in his original part. Troy Baker, who voiced and mo-capped Joel in the video game, plays James, the right-hand man of Bible-quoting cannibal David (Scott Shepherd). It might seem like a downgrade, but Baker was surprised to get even that substantive a part.
Speaking to Deadline about his experience on the series, Baker described how Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann came to him with the part:
"Neil was coy about this potential role. He was like, 'So, there's a character that we have in mind for you, if you're interested. If you don't feel interested, it's totally fine.' And I'm like, 'Dude, if there's anything for me ..." Look, I thought I was going to be a Clicker.

You wish to have the curse reversed? You’ll need to win a Tony first! Brian d’Arcy James gave an impressive performance as the Baker in the recent revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s “Into the Woods.” Despite an impressive stage career, James has never won a Tony Award. That could all change thanks to one of the biggest hits of the 2022-23 Broadway season, and he would break a major Tony stat in the process.
James has amassed a whopping 15 Broadway credits over the course of his career, including “Into the Woods.” He scored his first Tony nomination for the musical “Sweet Smell of Success” in 2002 before picking up additional bids as the titular ogre in “Shrek the Musical” (2010) and for the farce “Something Rotten!” (2015).

Hollywood’s postwar shift to social consciousness addressed familiar issues like bigotry and discrimination. On his way to making his gargantuan, serious epics, famed director George Stevens paused for this almost entirely forgotten contemplation of American anxiety in the business rat race, with a side order of alcoholism and potential adultery. Ray Milland is the troubled ad man who tries to help the drink-impaired actress, Joan Fontaine. Wife Teresa Wright waits patiently back home, but for how long? Is Stevens just dabbling in neorealistic doldrums, or did he feel the wave of dull existential despair as well? It’s one of his least-known films.

The first season of the HBO TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us covered the entirety of the first game, and for the second season the show will be moving on to an adaptation of the sequel game, The Last of Us Part II. But season 2 is not going to cover the entirety of the second game. It’s going to take more than one season to tell this story.
During an interview with GQ, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann (who was also the creative director on the video games) were asked if the next season would “span the entire course of the second game”. Mazin replied, “No. No way.” Druckmann added, “It’s more than one season.“
But when asked if the story of The Last of Us Part II would cover two or three seasons, Mazin and Druckmann couldn’t give a solid answer.

Daniel Ezra says Monday’s episode of The CW’s “All American” should have come with a “warning” for fans, as viewers saw characters continue to grieve the loss of Coach Billy Baker as well as witnessed Spencer make a shocking decision.
While portraying Spencer onscreen, Ezra was also working behind the camera as director for episode 13. This was Ezra’s second go at directing, with his directorial debut being Season 4’s twelfth episode. The actor says he felt “more confident this time around.”
“It’s a whole other kind of pressure,” Ezra told TheWrap ahead of the episode’s premiere. “I prepped any time I wasn’t acting in the coming weeks before I was directing — whether that be scripts, my knowledge of camera shots, angles and sizes. I went overboard on prep, so when it came to quote-unquote ‘game day,’ I was ready for anything.”
