As a young boy, Anton dreamed of becoming a soldier. He admired their uniforms, their strength, noticing how proud they were as they marched with their firearms. Life took him on another path, but the dream never left him. After working in construction on the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, his hard work was noticed by the general manager of the reserve and he was offered a permanent position.
From there he trained to be a field ranger and worked his way up the ranks from junior ranger to senior ranger, corporal, sergeant, to Head of Ranger Services. Anton was also a technical advisor to the Global Conservation Corps, keeping them up to date with the challenges the people and animals were facing inside and outside of the park.
His role drastically changed from the early days of being a field ranger when he just had to patrol the park for meat poachers working with snares, dogs, and spears. From 2008 on, local navigators working together with experienced and heavily armed shooters, illegally hunted and killed rhinos for their horns, making the work of the ranger more dangerous than ever. Anton ended up being a soldier of sorts after all, putting his life on the line to protect some of the world's most endangered species.
On July 26th, Anton was murdered at his home because of his life's passion - protecting rhinos, conserving nature, and fighting for a better future. His legacy will continue to live on through his 25 years of dedicated work, the many people he touched, and his story as told in the film Rhino Man.
After his death in 2022, Anton was awarded Best Game Ranger at the African Conservation Awards. On the anniversary of his death in 2023, he was awarded an IUCN WCPA international Ranger Award. These are two of the highest honors a ranger can receive for a life dedicated to their work. - Popular journalist since 1965, due to her social chronicles in the evening newspaper Diário Popular, "Bisbilhotices", signed under the pen name Vera Lagoa.
In 1975 she acquires the title of an earlier leftist weekly newspaper, O Diabo, to vent her right-wing views in an otherwise left-dominated press. Temporarily suspended under the prevailing press law, Vera Lagoa continued to write her weekly column in another radical-right newspaper, O Tempo. Crónicas do Tempo (1975), a digest of her newspaper editorials, knew three editions in the year it was published, and was part of the anti-communist resistance.
In an important text written in 1977, again in her newspaper O Diabo, she recalls "the good friendship " that once had united her and Manuel Alegre, as well as their common opposition to the Portuguese dictatorship before 1974, and attacks his action as (socialist) secretary of State for the mass media on the occasion of the suspension of another right-wing newspaper. She is puzzled by the difficulty of the new political leaders to deal with the criticisms of the press, and terms it as foolish, calls him a demagogue, and asks for his resignation - with a crying title, "Vai-te embora, Manuel!" (go away). He stayed; one year later, she was condemned in court for different adjectives used in another editorial written against the country's leadership. - Malu Braga was born on 23 December 1951 in Lourenço Marques, Mozambique. Jose Da Silveira, like many other celebrated painters before him such as Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Chagall, has been undeniably marked by the magical lights and colors of his French Provence.
Da Silveira's gift for art, discovered at an early age, gave him the opportunity to study with some of Provence's greatest masters, including Maurois and Ambrogiani. He began showing his work professionally at age 16. His work is both forceful and unique, with a mastery of color and pigment technique that earned him a dedicated following. As his style matured and evolved, art critics and connoisseurs coined it Formism, and a new school of art was born. 20 years later Formist painting continues to inspire a new generation of artists.
Da Silveira's style combines contemporary technique and form with explosive color and powerful imagery.
But the passion which forms the core of his work finds its source in his turbulent and colorful youth. Da Silveira was born in 1965 in a tiny jungle village in Mozambique, on the vast and agitated African Continent to a celebrated Portuguese rejoneador (bullfighter), and the daughter of one of the leaders of the French Resistance in Provence.
As his father was in Africa fighting in the Mozambican Liberation War, Da Silveira spent the first years of his life shuttling between Africa and France, then Portugal and France, ultimately settling with his mother in Marseille.
Although the extreme thirst for life which Jose learned at an early age is always apparent in his work, the recurring theme of romantic and parental love is the muse of his work, which he describes as visual poetry.
With his works in some of the most prominent collections in Japan and Europe, including that of the Portuguese Royal Family, Da Silveira began seeking a new challenge: the New World. Since his relocation to California in 1997, his palette has found a new brilliance and explosive quality, which only the Californian ambiance can inspire. Da Silveira's passion for the female form, whether maternal or sensual, is also an important inspiration for his painting. From her most sacred to her most lonely moments, Da Silveira provides the viewer a window into a woman's soul. From his dreams comes his poetic vision. Jose is also know as a novelist, playwright and movie producer.- Ismael Calliano was born in October 1991 in Mozambique. He is an actor, known for Tiro e Queda (2019), O Nosso Cônsul em Havana (2019) and Vermelho Monet (2022).
