- Mia Elliott, adult daughter of late war correspondent Mark Elliott and physician mother Han Suyin, anticipates a new life in America with her father's family and their close friends the Donnelly family.
- Mia meets Phillip and Helen Elliott, her aunt and uncle, cousin Mark Elliott, her father's namesake, and sisters Iris and Laura Donnelly
- At first Mia dates pilot Paul Bradley (Nicholas Pryor), but she later develops a serious relationship with Dr. Jim Abbott (Robert Milli).
- Mark drops by Iris' apartment to complain about her treatment of sister Laura. Iris implies that something is going between Mark and Laura. Mark becomes angry and walks out, saying he's going to find a saloon. An upset Iris grabs a bottle and begins to drink. Tom pays a visit to the wealthy Mrs. Alex Porter. He questions her about her about her late husband's fertility clinic, Dr. Jim Abbott, and their relationship to Terry Andrews. Mrs. Porter coyly plays a cat and mouse game with Tom's questions. Her son Jock interrupts them, and before Tom leaves, Jock makes a comment about saying hello to Iris, which annoys Tom. Afterward, Jock warns his mother not to blow things by trying to nail Jim Abbott to the wall. Jock phones Iris to see if he can find out how much Tom and the police know. Tom goes to see Iris. He reiterates his dislike for Jock, warning Iris to stay away from him. Iris tells a disbelieving Tom about losing Mark to Laura, but Tom won't accept it. Iris continues drinking. Having tracked down Mark at a bar, Iris begins to drive him home. They quarrel again, prompting Iris to act out by speeding over the limit. As she and Mark fight, Iris loses control of the car, and they crash.
