- Giuseppe, an Italian gas station attendant, is invited to the United States to reconcile with his father, who he believed had been dead for years.
- In 1925 the young florentine typographer Mario moves to via del Corno to be near his girl-friend Bianca. Here he becomes friends with Maciste, his landlord, and Ugo, anti-fascists both of them. When Campolmi is beaten by the fascists, Mario meets Milena, Campolmi's wife, at the hospital and falls in love with her leaving Bianca. Then Maciste is killed, again by the fascists, Ugo is wounded and he seeks shelter in ^ÓSignora^Ô's house. Here he falls in love with Gesuina and the two marry. Campolmi dies, but Mario and Milena part themselves. Later Mario too is arrested by the police.
- The officer Nico Giraldi investigates a homicide which has taken place in a Chinese restaurant in Rome. His wife and his son are kidnappeded by the murderer in the course of the inquiry. In the end the case is worked out.
- Fontamara is a village in the Marsica, forgotten by all but God and its inhabitants are called 'cafoni' (boors). Berardo Viola wants to marry Elvira but only after gaining enough money to buy some land and in order to reach his aim he has the idea of going to a great city. When Maria Grazia is raped by the fascists, Berardo and Antonio decide to leave Fontamara and go to Rome. Here they are swindled by a lawyer and afterwards they are invited by an antifascist to a restaurant where they are arrested by the police because of some subversive papers they had. Berardo dies from the tortures and Antonio can only go back to his Fontamara after signing a paper in which he declares that Berardo had killed himself.
- The retired general Antonio Cavalli is a nuisance to his family: to his wife Francesca who still works, to his son, and to his daughter-in-law. Then he finds a job in a building firm. Only by chance Cavalli finds out that his salary is paid by his wife to keep him busy. But the general is well known as a very reliable man, and Sandrelli, the firm's owner, uses him and his name to win a valuable contract. When Sandrelli is arrested, the general finds the money to honour his debt but he is robbed on his way to the bank.
- When the Church decides that St Satiro Vedovo, the patron saint of the little village Fonteparadiso, never existed and St Silvester takes his place, its inhabitants rise up against the fact. The new Vicar Don Arcadio can't find a single person to go to the village church, from the mayor down. But when Brambilla, a gangster from Milan, tries to steal the statue of St Satiro because of its value, and a group of village boys and girls save it with the help of Don Arcadio, Fonteparadiso again finds peace.
- 1849 - Ciceruacchio declares the Independent Republic of Rome, but the French and the Austrians try to bring back the Pope to Rome.
- The son of Klausner is kidnapped in a Sardinian village. Klausner, who pays his ex-wife to keep the son, decides not to pay the ransom and to handle the kidnapping himself. With help from Germany, Klausner identifies the boss of the kidnappers and order to kidnap in turn the son of the boss.
- Pascale, married to an architect, misses her flight to London and is forced to stay in Berlin, at the Kleinhoff Hotel where she stayed as a student. Karl, a would-be revolutionary, lives in the adjoining room and Pascale spies on him and his ex-girlfriend through a hole, then follows him to a questionable place where she is arrested by the police during a revolutionists' raid. When she returns to the Kleinhoff Hotel, Pascale finds Karl crying, enters his room to console him and they have a love affair. While she sleeps, he kills himself; upon awakening, she coldly dresses and leaves the hotel.
- Franca and her husband Antonio decide to sell a yellow rug, which was a gift of Franca's stepfather. One day, while Antonio is out, a strange man rings, saying he wishes to buy the rug. But the man's visit becomes a nightmare. He kidnaps Franca and says he killed his wife on that same yellow rug. Then Franca kills the man. But is that really all that has happened? And who was that strange man?
- Northern Italy under fascist rule: Luca becomes a partisan, but after the war ends things are not as he had hoped for him and he decides to die. Then he meets women.
- Lorella must marry Dr. Matteini, but when she goes to Naples to meet him, she meets Michele, who sings in restaurants. The fateful spark is ignited, and although Michele is poor, Lorella decides to marry him against his mother's wishes. Michele is successful as a singer, but the mother remains granite in her refusal to communicate with Lorella--until he birth of a granddaughter who is given her name.
- Two inmates escape prison changing clothes with a couple of businessmen. They'll be taken by the financiers and find themselves surrounded by wealth and beautiful women.
- On entering her bathroom, Luisa finds a naked man showering. She calls the police at once and the man is arrested. At the police station Alberto, a psychiatrist, recognizes the man: he is Paolo, Luisa's husband. Alberto offers to help Paolo, but when the two men arrive at his home, Paolo still in his bathrobe, Luisa hugs Alberto and calls him Paolo. The two men try everything they think of to help Luisa regain her memory until the last (but not too unexpected) surprise.
- Bruno Desantis is a popular TV showman but Sofia, his wife, has left him. Bruno is still in love with her and tries to call her. Unfortunately, or fortunately, his telephone is out of order and he is forced to go out seeking for one. He ends in a house where he finds three women: Vera, Simona and Betty. The three are so moved by his distress to decide to cure him, to nourish him and, in the end, to love him. Bruno begins to live like a Sultan in his harem. But all the dreams come to an end and he finds himself alone again with his telephone still out of order and he is forced again to go out and to meet other women... who knows?
- A young policewoman discovers an ecological scandal and must face the corruption in the Milan Police department.
- A businessman is nicknamed "L'avvocato" and his driver, Oscar, is a yes-man. When L'avvocato has a crash while driving his car, Oscar is put in jail in his place. When Oscar gets out, he finds himself married to the beautiful Maria, but he can't even touch her: she is l'avvocato's lover. Afterwards Oscar is appointed manager, but he can't manage a dime. At the end he shall find himself again in jail, hoping that his "sissignore" (yessir) will let him have, sometime, a driver to send to prison in his place.
- The bitter secretary of a businessman plans to murder him and replace him with a hired look-alike accomplice in order to drain the company's bank accounts.
- Rosario Scimoni is twenty years old and lives in Catania at the beginning of this century. He loves two things in life: women and money and he is the secretary of the mayor who is his uncle, and the lover of the mayor's wife, but, unfortunately, he isn't paid for neither of his two jobs. When Rosario falls in love with Paola, partner af a socialist, he becames socialist and let the man of Paola go to jail to have her, but he has no success. When Mussolini and his fascists take the power, Rosario found himself fascist and he marries a women ugly but rich. He becames a gerarca (high fascist authority). When during World War II Sicily is invaded by the allied troops he camouflages himself as communist and at the end of the war he goes to Rome after losing all the money he had. In Rome Rosario changes again his skin and becames a Chistian Democrat after the Christian Democrat's victory in the elections of 1948. Trying to speculate on the land near Rome he ends in prison for five years and in 1953 Rosario closes his career dressed as a German selling faked German gadgets in the streets of Rome.
- Fake private detective Mike Spillone is hired by two old ladies to find out if Brigitte, the wife of their nephew Otello Bellomo, has a lover. Brigitte is a physician but the two aunts are unaware of the fact. While investigating, Mike and his assistant Johnny discover Brigitte with a prospective patient, the Marquis De Vitti, who was shot by the husband of the woman he tried to seduce. Afterwards, Spillone finds her with her husband and believes he is her lover.
- Assola is an imaginary village on the border between Italy and France and the borderline crosses the village itself. The French customs agent Ferdinand is always trying to catch the Italian smuggler Giuseppe. Giuseppe discovers that Ferdinand was actually born in Italy and therefore he can't be a French customs agent.
- Four poor fellows win a luxurious car in a lottery but they have not the money to keep it. Therefore they decide to have it a day each and sell it afterwards. Everyone will spend his own day with the car and get some gratification. Some will get it, others will not. And the fifth poor fellow?
- The Duke Gagliardo della Forcoletta, penniless and expert in horse-races, finds out he has a daughter, Emma Marini, who works in the bar Aurora. The Duke decides to participate in "Lascia o Raddoppia," a TV quiz transmission, in order to win the five million lira necessary to buy the bar, and he becomes famous. Gangsters Nick Molise and Joe Taccola bet between themselves on his success and the Duke is kidnapped.
- The day of Chief Constable Saracino begins badly when his new car is stolen. Then, in his office, he meets Alfredo Fiori who believes that his wife and her lover, a veterinary, are trying to murder him. Fiore has a witness: a parrot! During his day of work in search of his stolen car, Saracino finds out the thefts of the custom officer Mastrillo, who tries to bribe him, and the faked colonel Mazza, ran away from an asylum who convinces him to have found out a new Landru, but it was only the set of a movie. In the evening, at last, Don Amilcare recovers Saracino's car, so he can say that all is well that ends well.
- The Marquis Galeazzo di Torre Alta is murdered by a mysterious killer who calls himself Diabolicus. His heirs are his three brothers and a sister, but all of them except Monsignor Antonino di Torre Alta are killed by Diabolicus. The police are unable to solve the case, but when Antonino gives his inheritance to Pasquale Bonocore--illegitimate son of his father--and Pasquale is in prison and therefore can't be the killer, all the clues are in the hand of the police.
- When swindler La Spada and his accomplice José are released from jail in Madrid, they decide to pull a really great swindle: nothing less than to discover and sell a third picture of Goya's "Maya in Camison" (Maya in a nightgown). They engage the renowned Scorcelletti who lives in Rome and can forge any artwork. Afterwards, with help from the beautiful Eva, they convince celebrated art critic Francisco Montiel of the existence of a third Maya and let him find the picture. When the swindlers are at the point of selling the fake to an American millionaire, Scorcelli returns from Rome to sell one of his six other maya pictures.
- Wolfgang is traveling in outer space when a monster, which he sees as a beautiful woman, appears in his spaceship and makes love with him. Then the ship is forced to land on a planet which is a penal colony. Here he meets Miranda who falls in love with him. A group of prisoners uses him and his spaceship to fly away from the planet. But the monster which is by now inside Wolfgang arouses and only Miranda's love can save him.

- In Milan, in the winter of 1944, the ruthless Cane Nero leads the Fascists against the partisans. Enne 2, one of the leading figures of the C.N.L., meets Berta, whom he loved three years ago, but Berta refuses to leave her husband for him. Enne 2 is pursued by the Fascists of Cane Nero and, instead of running away to Turin, waits for Berta to rejoin him.

- Carlo Rutelli falls in love with the beautiful variety singer Yvonne la Nuit, but his father opposes the wedding. World War I breaks out and Carlo is killed while Yvonne has a son, but on orders from Carlo's father, she is told he is dead. Her career descends and only Nino, an art partner, remains close to her and helps her earn her living by singing in taverns. Upon Carlo's father's death, Lawyer Rubinordo informs Yvonne that her son is alive, but she prefers that he continues to believe her dead; she doesn't want him to see her in her reduced state.
