- Two young friends embark on a road trip across France in a vehicle they built themselves.
- A garage owner maintains his business as a front for his gang of criminals.
- Loudun, October 1947. Leon and Marie Besnard celebrate their 18th wedding anniversary with friends and Ady, a former German prisoner they have "adopted." A few days later, Leon dies. Louise, a friend of the couple's--and probably Leon's mistress--claims that on his deathbed, the deceased told her that Marie was poisoning him. The whole town soon condemns Marie and she is arrested and sent to jail. Did she really kill Léon as well as 12 other family members, as she finds is the charge against her?

The King, whose trust in Le Floch remains unshaken, takes him away from the dangers of the investigation and sends him on a mission to London.

A grand gala is organized in honor of this royal event and the Provost Marshal is charged with watching over the festivities instead of Monsieur de Sartine. Nicolas Le Floch is worried and it is not long before his concerns are proven to be well founded: a massacre mars the revelry. At the scene of the incident, Bourdeau, Le Floch's deputy, is drawn to the corpse of a young woman. The victim seems to have been strangled and Nicolas has her taken to the Basse Geôle for an autopsy. Monsieur de Sartine orders him to investigate.
- Marleau is called to a beauty salon in Sceaux, where an employee was found poisoned. The victim's participation in community theatre leads Marleau to an actor, his family, and his entourage.
- Oscar the coroner sends for Marleau after a man is killed in a "duel" staged by a group reenacting Napoleonic battles. The investigation pits Marleau against a lawyer from a past case.
