He hires them to get some photos of gangland boss Frankie Arbo but Mr. Arbo does not care to have his picture in the papers and dislikes cameramen for the same reason. "Sach" and "Duke" pose as interior decorators in the penthouse of Mae Randall in order to get photos of Arbo. Later, at Arbo's night club, the boys learn that the gangster is importing a tough hoodlum from Chicago. "Sach" and "Duke" lure the visiting gunman, Handsome Hal Lomax to Mrs. Kelly's boardinghouse and trick him into staying there through false police calls. "Sach" masquerades as Handsome Hal and gets away with it, and he and "Duke" manage to get into Arbo's inner office with the Boss and his henchmen, and the boys are cut into the gang's racket, which is counterfeit money. Then Handsome Hal shows up and things are getting dicey for the boys until Handsome Hal's jilted sweetheart, Dolly Tate makes her appearance, and she is so put out with getting jilted by the real Handsome Hal that she identifies "Sach" as the real Handsome Hal, and fingers Handsome himself as the impostor.. "Sach" has been taking photos with a miniature camera hidden in his cigarette holder, but accidentally unloads the camera, and the film falls out, exposing the boys and the film.
- The police find the body of hostess Helen Howard (Wanda McKay), disposed of by petty racketeer Nick Mantee (Kane Richmond) after she was shot in his Bluejay night club by Benny Nordick (John Gallaudet) because she knew too much about Mantee's rackets. Police Lieutenant Williams (Conrad Nagel) and police Sergeant Tom Ramey (Ralph Byrd) inform the dead girl's parents and sister Nancy (Audrey Long) of the run-away's death. Nancy, inpatient waiting for the police to get a solid case together, signs with the Mercer Agency operated by Nordick, training girls for an excessive sum which they work off as hostesses at the Bluejay Club. Nancy becomes a hostess at the club and after a party for Latin-American night club owner Barda (Anthony Warde), she uncovers evidence that places Helen at the club. She accuses Nick and Benny of the murder and the two mobsters realize they must do away with her.
- Slip, Sach, Whitey, Butch and Chuck witness a warehouse robbery, and are arrested and jailed on suspicion. Gabe Moreno, their lawyer-friend gets them released on bail. Since the charge of suspicion is one that the prosecutors appear to believe can be easily proved, the gang is awaiting trail, when Whitey, a short-wave radio fan, picks up information that leads him to believe that instructions for the warehouse robbery and others are given by an inmate in the penitentiary to his pals on the outside via short-wave radio. When the five go on trail, Slip and Sach plead guilty so that they may be imprisoned and the other three are given probation. Once in the Big House, Slip and Sach learn immediately learn that two notorious gangsters, Pretty Boy Gleason and Benny the Blood, expected to arrive at the prison have received a last-minute stay-of-sentence, so they decide to pose as Pretty Boy and Benny, in order to be readily accepted among the Cons and learn which of them is the one sending out the robbery instructions. They meet the leader, Bat Armstrong, and learn from Whitey, who has intercepted one of Bat's short-wave messages, that a prison break is planned. But before they can do much about that, the real Pretty Boy and Benny are imprisoned, and Slip and Sach are now known by Bat and his friends to be impostors.
- Slip and Sach are in the sidewalk star-gazing business when they see a murder committed in a room at the El Royale Hotel, blocks away. In spite of the fussy-and-fidget objections of the hotel manager, Andre Schmidtlapp, the Bowery Boys and their friend Police Officer Gabe Moreno search the murder room and find nothing beyond learning that the room is occupied by "Silky" Thomas. Police Captain Madison reprimands Gabe for leaving his beat on a false alarm, but later tips from Slip and Sach help Gabe lead raids on Silky's gambling operations. The latter sends Gabe's former friend "Feathers" to Gabe with a bribe offer but Gabe refuses. The boys read about the killing of a Professor Prescott and identify him as the man they saw murdered. Slip and Sach tell the professor's daughter, Ann Prescott, they will find her father's killers, and they get jobs as bellhops at the hotel. "Hatchet", one of the gangsters, thinks Sach is a former cell-mate and this causes a complication or two along the way.
