- In 1961, Jack and Martha, a young, African-American couple, are traveling across the country for a new job opportunity in California. Jack, a Korean War Vet, and Monique, his very-pregnant wife, need to stop in New Mexico as the hot weather and rough roads are causing Martha great distress. They reference a travel guide "The Negro Motorist Green Book" that tells them the motels that allow African-Americans to stay as well as the gas stations that will sell them gas. They are turned away from the first motel in Las Cruces, NM and must drive 100 miles to the next town that will house them, Lordsburg, NM. On the way, their car breaks down and no one will stop to help them. Until an old, World War II veteran, Tom, who drives for a garage, pulls over. The two men ultimately bond over their war experiences and Tom, at the risk of losing his job, agrees to help the young couple by giving them parts to repair their car.
