Building a Biography
Single-Black-Male10 May 2004
One of the things that the 34 year old D.W. Griffith lacks in his short films is a biography for each character. None of them seem to have a history, and therefore the actors are not able to do some independent homework off the set to prepare for each day's shoot. You can tell by just watching this short film that Griffith had a few notes sketched down on a piece of paper without a script to work from. He allowed his cameraman to let the camera roll and hope that the visuals will tell the story. The result is that the protagonists do not come to life or possess any personality whatsoever, suggesting that the actors had no intervention in making script changes.
