A "Red Feather Photoplay." Early on, since Universal did not own theaters, they used to have a three-level system to make it easier for theater owners to decide whether to acquire a film for display. Red Feather films were the lowest level, then Bluebird, then Jewel. Red Feather films were cheaper, everyday productions with widely popular (if a bit simple or sentimental) stories. Contrast this with Jewel films like Lon Chaney in Phantom of the Opera where the full prestige and resources of Universal were tapped.
