A Rags to Riches Story
PamelaShort14 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Young Bessie Allen, ( Violet Mersereau ) loves to dance and delights the crowds in the streets of the slums of New York where she lives. One day in a drunken stupor, her father kills her mother, then himself, leaving Bessie an orphan. The young girl is knocked down by the car of Mrs. Latham, ( Clara Beyers ) a society matron, she takes an interest in Bessie and obtains her a job as a dress model. Noticing her beauty and talent, Joseph Abrams ( Tony Merlo ) hires Bessie to dance in his cabaret, where she attracts the attention of theatrical agent Shirley Martin ( Mary Alden ). Bessie becomes a Broadway success, but Mrs.Latham is jealous of Martin's attentions towards Bessie, and becomes intent on ruining her reputation. She fails her attempt and Bessie goes on and finds true love.

Violet Mersereau was often cast as innocent young helpless girls which was a popular staple in films at the time, and The Narrow Path is a perfect example of her work. Sadly it remains a lost film.
