Theodore Roberts Takes the Lead
wes-connors28 May 2011
Lasky's supporting actor Theodore Roberts (most remembered for the character roles he played in the company's Cecil B. DeMille films) gets to lead this politically intriguing drama. Unfortunately, the film is no longer available for viewing. Mr. Roberts plays a character described by writer Julian Johnson in "Photoplay" (May 1917) as "the composite picture of the all-American small town politician," who is actually an "inefficient lawyer." Roberts helps ambitious Ernest Joy (as James Kitwell) win a Senate seat, and is rewarded with "The American Consul" title. As such, Roberts becomes a pawn in a dangerous game involving Mexican revolutionary Charles West (as Pedro Gonzales) and Raymond Hatton (as President Cavillo).

Roberts' pretty daughter Maude Fealy (as Joan Manning) and handsome fiancé Tom Forman (as Geoffrey Daniels) help set things in order while providing viewers with a romantic couple. Reportedly, the film offered a typically fine Roberts performance, but in a less than spectacular motion picture. In his "Photoplay" review, Mr. Johnson thought Ms. Fealy, "a splendid addition to the file of leading women." Mr. Forman was, at the time, the most popular player in the picture; the young actor/director was #23 among actors in the 1917 "Motion Picture Magazine" poll. Forman committed suicide in 1926, perhaps inspiring "What Price Hollywood?"

**** The American Consul (2/15/17) Rollin Sturgeon ~ Theodore Roberts, Maude Fealy, Tom Forman, Ernest Joy
