Stories of this type have become quite familiar
deickemeyer17 November 2014
Maude George is featured in this five-reel offering as a vampire woman. In the first scenes a married man is seen in court, pleading guilty to embezzlement. He has been in the toils of the siren, who squeezed him to the last cent and then left him to his faithful wife and the avenging law. Considine, the man in question, is sentenced to the penitentiary for ten years. Later the story of Leone's past is pictured. Her abandoned husband is shown on his death bed, attended by the only child, a little girl. This child grows up, after being adopted by a certain Dr. McClean. Then Leone is once more shown, in an attempt to lure away the fiancé of her own child. This is prevented by the reappearance of Considine and his wife. Stories of this type have become quite familiar, but when well handled, as this one is, they hold the attention throughout. The action is slightly mechanical, but approaches drama in one or two instances. The scene between mother and daughter is strong and convincingly presented. It is difficult to believe that a woman of the vampire type could hold her age so much better than the others in the story; the lapse of ten years leaves scarcely a mark upon her. The story closes pleasingly, the girl marrying, not her faithless lover, but Dr. McClean, her guardian. This of course has numerous precedents. – The Moving Picture World, January 27, 1917

PamelaShort28 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Allen Holubar both starred in and directed this lost 1917 Universal Film production that had an interesting dramatic storyline.. Little Johanna ( Virginia Lee Corbin ) is deserted by her flighty, irresponsible mother, and the child is adopted by the lonely and kind Dr. John McLean ( Allen Holubar ). The child grows into a very attractive young lady ( now played by Francelia Billington ) and she falls in love with young medical student Gerald ( Paul Bryon ). The young man soon falls under the spell of a rapacious older woman, Leonie ( Maude George ) who turns out to be Johanna's long lost mother. It is now up to the caring Dr. McLean to clear up the situation and bring Johanna and Gerald back together. Fans can only hope a copy of this early silent drama resurfaces.
