The Lifted Veil (1917) - A Tragic Loss
PamelaShort21 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Clorinda Gildersleeve ( Ethel Barrymore ), is so overcome with remorse, after having an affair with Leslie Palliser ( Robert Ellis ), her best friend's husband, she flees to Europe to escape her old associations. There Clorinda meets Malcolm Grant ( William B. Davidson ), who falls in love with her. Unwilling to accept the love of a good man, Clorinda returns to America where, heavily veiled, she confides her sin to the Rev. Arthur Bainbridge ( Frank Gilmore ). Grant follows and after he professes his love, Clorinda informs him of her past and he refuses to marry her. Clorinda then becomes involved in settlement work, and soon Bainbridge falls in love with her and proposes. She consents, but before the marriage can take place, Grant returns and begs forgiveness. It is granted and Clorinda returns to the worldly man, preferring him over the minister. They are married and leave for hospital duty in France.

This powerful 1917 drama was based on the novel, The Lifted Veil by Basil King, an author popular with women readers. It was Ethel Barrymore's eighth silent film and is tragically now considered lost.
