The Spreading Dawn (1917) - Sad Loss
PamelaShort5 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Georgina Vanderpyl ( Mabel Ballin ) is in love with Captain Lewis Nugent ( Edmund Lowe ) and wants to marry him before his departure for France, but she must obtain her elderly Aunt Patricia's permission. Her Aunt refuses, and in reply to the girls questioning, she gives her, her own diary from girlhood to read. The diary unfolds the story of Patricia's marriage to soldier Anthony Vanderpyl ( Orme Caldara ). During his furlough after the outbreak of the Civil War, Anthony suddenly leaves Patricia to visit Mrs. Le Roy ( Florence Billings ), an old flame, and is killed by her jealous husband. Certain that Anthony had been unfaithful to her, Patricia refuses to open the letter that her husband sent to her on the day of his death. Georgina now opens it and discovers that Anthony had gone to Mrs. Le Roy to end the affair that his brother Bentley ( Harry Spingler ) was having with her. With this startling revelation, Patricia gives her blessing for her niece to marry, and then dies, going to join Anthony in "the spreading dawn."

This silent drama was produced by Samuel Goldwyn in his first year of producing independently in his own studio. Sadly most of this film is lost with only part of reel 3, surviving at the Library of Congress.
