Riddle Gawne (1918)
William S. Hart and Lon Chaney in the same film is certainly something that would draw a film buffs attention but sadly RIDDLE GAWNE is one of the thousands of silent films that are now lost. This five-reeler was considered lost for many decades until the first reel eventually showed up in a Russian vault. Until the full film is found this is the best we've got. The story has Hart playing a cowboy whose brother is killed by a bandit who also takes his wife with him. Hart sets out to try and get revenge on the man. Sadly there's only about ten-minutes worth of footage available but this here is certainly better than nothing. For me personally the biggest reason to check this out was that it does feature Lon Chaney as a man wanting the woman who just happens to be in love with Hart. Chaney, with a full head of hair, seems to be pretty good in the role and there's no question Hart is doing what he does best. Overall this film seems to have been made well and it seems like a decent picture. It's hard to judge off of just ten-minutes but hopefully one day the complete film will be found.
