This one is in poor shape, alas. The first two reels were missing, a lot of the footage looked so washed out and worn out that a lot of what I guess is Joe August's usual beautiful photography is hard to see, and several of the art titles near the end are almost illegible.
Nonetheless, what remains is a typically solid William Hart production. He plays a too-trusting cowpoke who gets appointed sheriff by a con man, who is selling people farm land out west and then selling it to the next batch of settlers. When Hart figures it out, he heads to Chicago to bring the thief back to Arizona for real justice.
The.scenes of Hart in his western gear wandering around the Chicago stockyards and along the Lake Shore are startling and director Lambert Hillyer directs the entire movie very nicely, with moments of despair and good humor.
It makes me yearn for a quality print, but I'm grateful for what there is here.
