Several well-known Jewish actresses were rejected for the role of Sara because they were believe to look too American. Among them were Alma Rubens, Leatrice Joy and Carmel Myers. The part eventually went to Helen Ferguson, who was of Irish extraction.
This film was considered lost for decades, until an incomplete copy was found in 1978. It is estimated that about fifteen minutes are missing due to heavy use of the reels. This estimation does not include cuts and changes made between completion and release.
Ethel Kaye was originally cast as Sara, but the resulting footage proved so disappointing that she was replaced.
For the role of Sara, Helen Ferguson spent several weeks working in a Jewish butcher shop and living with the family that ran it. The bump on her nose was always something she hated - she was always rejected by casting directors - but it was the main reason she got the part as it made her look more ethnically Jewish. Ferguson had her nose "fixed" via plastic surgery a few years later.
