The Deuce you Say!
boblipton28 September 2002
An unintentionally hilarious comedy-mystery-western of how Hoxie's family is being murdered by the evil MacGill family in a range war: Hoxie is trying to figure out who is killing off his relatives and pinning a playing card to the corpses with, apparently, never a thought as to motivation.

Of course Hoxie and the chief MacGill's pretty niece fall in love with each other. The deliberate humor in this one involves a small white dog biting people, and the niece whacking people on the head with a frying pan. Hoxie's horse seems to have a bored expression on his face during the medium shots. Perhaps I'm projecting.

Not one of McGowan's best shots!

Warning: Spoilers
Possibly, director J.P. McGowan's worst film. My guess is that it was originally designed as a two-reeler. When it was decided to make it five, no extra scenes were added to the script, except possibly for the dog. This forced director McGowan to extend every scene as long as possible, even when there was precious little in the way of action or character development to hold the interest of the audience. It was also a bad decision to provide a solution to the mystery almost right from the start. Peggy Montgomery, Jules Cowles, Andrew Waldron and even Minna Serry Redman receive more close-ups than Al Hoxie. Still, Peggy Montgomery is an attractive lass and she doesn't seem to mind posing for endless close-ups. A pity the producer couldn't afford to give her at least one change of costume! Perhaps understandably, McGowan himself was so proud of the way he had so ingeniously extended the running time of this somewhat boring movie that he takes care to identify himself with a signature shot of his photograph, not once, but twice! Available on a good Alpha DVD.
