- Helen: I wanna be free! I wanna be gay and have fun! Life's short. And I wanna live while I'm alive!
- Anarchist: Why should we fight this war? For Capitalism? You will die! You will die! All your sons will die! For Capitalism? Down with Capitalism! Down with war!
- Gretchen - Waitress: You're brother is not coming today, Herr Rutledge?
- Roy Rutledge: Oh, yes, he'll be along soon Gretchen. Nothing can keep Monte away from this good beer.
- Karl Armstedt: Nothing, except a good looking woman!
- Gretchen - Waitress: Jawohl! That brother of your's is a naughty boy. But, I like him!
- Karl Armstedt: He has a way with them, hey, Gretchen.
- Gretchen - Waitress: You, you don't know half of it!
- Monte Rutledge: A duel! Can you imagine it?
- Roy Rutledge: Running away?
- Monte Rutledge: Oh, don't be an ass, Roy. You don't expect me to go through with a farce like this.
- Roy Rutledge: But, Monte, it's the only thing you can do.
- Monte Rutledge: Oh, there you go again. I suppose when a woman's no good and her husband finds it out, I've got to get shot, just because it's the honorable thing to do.
- Helen: Roy, you've no right to look so cool. I'm broiling. Feel!
- Roy Rutledge: [caresses her cheek] Yes, you are, aren't you.
- Roy Rutledge: Having a better time than you expected, Monte?
- Monte Rutledge: Marvelous. Been dancing with a beautiful brunette. Name of Elenor. She's perfect.
- Helen: Oh, I'd imagine, you don't really think she's beautiful?
- Roy Rutledge: Kitty-kitty-kitty-kitty-kitty-kitty-kitty.
- Helen: Stop it. I'm not a a cat.
- Roy Rutledge: Yes, you are.
- Helen: Well, if I'm a kitty, I'm a thirsty kitty.
- Helen: Are we here?
- Monte Rutledge: Well, it's number 27.
- Helen: Want to come up for a cigarette and a drink?
- Monte Rutledge: Oh, really? You must be awfully tired.
- Helen: No, I'm not. Come see my room. I've only had a place of my own for a week. It's a new toy.
- Monte Rutledge: What a baby, you are.
- [Helen sticks her tongue out to Monte]
- Helen: You're not a bit like Roy are you?
- Monte Rutledge: I should say not. Roy's frightfully high-minded. He doesn't approve of me.
- Helen: He wouldn't approve of me either if he knew what I really liked.
- Monte Rutledge: Doesn't he know?
- Helen: No. When I'm with Roy, I'm the way Roy wants me to be. That's caddish, isn't it? But, I can't help it.
- Helen: Why so gloomy?
- Monte Rutledge: God, I'm rotten.
- Helen: I can't see it.
- Monte Rutledge: Can't you? Well, then, you're rotten too!
- Helen: Please.
- [Capt. Redfield puts out his cigarette]
- Helen: That's a good boy.
- Capt. Redfield: What a life it would be married to you.
- Helen: Oh, you don't fancy it?
- Capt. Redfield: Beastly, no smokes!
- Helen: Think of all the money we'd save.
- Capt. Redfield: What would we spend it on?
- Helen: Oh, a diamond dog collar.
- Capt. Redfield: For me?
- Helen: No, I'd buy a muzzle for you.
- Capt. Redfield: You wouldn't spoil my beautiful moustache, would you?
- Helen: No. We'd keep that in the parlor, under glass.
- Monte Rutledge: Still no news on Harry?
- Roy Rutledge: No.
- Monte Rutledge: Somebody always gets it on the night patrol.
- Monte Rutledge: I'm not yellow! I can see things as they are, that's all. And I'm sick of this rotten business. Fools! Why do you let them kid you like this? What are you fighting for? Patriotism? Duty? Are you mad? Can't you see they're just words? Words caused by politicians and profiteers to convince you into fighting for them! What's a word compared with life? The only life you've got! I'll give 'em a word. Murder! That's what this dirty, rotten, politician war is! Murder! You know it as well as I do. Yellow, am I? You're the ones that are yellow! I've got guts to say what I think! You're afraid to say it! So afraid to be called yellow, you'll kill first! You fools! You poor, stupid fools!
- Roy Rutledge: What's your program? Wine, women and song?
- Monte Rutledge: Oh, perhaps I'll do without the song tonight.
