It’s not quite fair to call The Laughing Apple a comeback album. Since 2006, the artist who beguiled listeners in the ’70s as the spiritually curious Cat Stevens has released three discs under the mononym Yusuf—short for Yusuf Islam, his chosen moniker after adopting the Islamic faith in 1977. These works were his first foray into Western music after shunning the industry in the wake of his religious conversion, during which time he sold his guitars and focused instead on charity work and theological study. Fans were grateful for any new output following the decades of silence, but Yusuf’s...

In the highly likely event that you’re still recovering from last week’s Most Memorable Year theme, Dancing With the Stars followed that up on Monday with the perfect chaser: Disney Night. (Thanks, corporate synergy!)

Night one of Dancing With the Stars’ two-night finale aired Monday, and with only four amazing stars remaining, it was going to be sad to see anyone get eliminated.
After a night of lukewarm "redemption" dances -- where stars got a chance to re-do a dance style that they'd previously performed -- and four amazing freestyle performances, there was no clear choice for elimination between Laurie Hernandez, Calvin Johnson Jr., James Hinchcliffe and Jana Kramer.
After it was announced that Hernandez and Johnson were safe and would be moving on to the final round of finals, it all came down to Kramer and Hinchcliffe, who'd both delivered a slew of perfectly-scored dances throughout the season.
However, when it came right down to it, Kramer couldn't compete with Hinchcliffe's amazing comeback story and the 32-year-old singer was sent packing, along with her pro-partner, Gleb Savchenko.

Many of us know the Super Nintendo classics, but do you remember all of the console's most underappreciated games?
This year marks 25 years since the Super Nintendo Entertainment System was released; a momentous occasion for video game fans growing up in the 90s. Even though the Big N has released four more consoles since, many Nintendo fans would say the Snes is still the best console that the House of Mario has ever released.
A lot of the console's success has to do its with roster of games. From third-party titles to Nintendo's own franchises, this was an era that showcased the platform's total dominance over the industry, even as the Sega Genesis proved to be a strong competitor. It’s not difficult to see why: just looking at Nintendo's own IPs, it's easy to argue that Super Mario World, Super Metroid, and The Legend Of Zelda...

How would you program this year's newest, most interesting films into double features with movies of the past you saw in 2015?Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2015—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2015 to create a unique double feature. All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2015 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch...

Doctor Who, Series 9, Episodes 3 and 4, “Under the Lake” and “Before the Flood”
Written by Toby Whithouse
Directed by Daniel O’Hara
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on BBC America
Multi-part stories have been a mixed bag in Doctor Who since its 2005 revival. When they work (series two’s “The Impossible Planet”/“The Satan Pit”, series five’s “The Pandorica Opens”/“The Big Bang”), the increased runtime allows for greater character development and world-building, plus a much more affecting emotional payoff in the stories’ climax. When they don’t, however—let’s hope the show never tops series one’s “Aliens of London”/“World War Three” for unfortunate two-parters—the audience is left to slog through an overlong, under-developed, and frequently repetitive story better left at one episode. Series nine will feature four multi-part stories, the most since the show’s return, and while the opening two-parter ultimately struggled with overly...

Adieu au langage - Goodbye to Language
A Works Cited
Introduction
From its bluntly political opening (Alfredo Bandelli's 'La caccia alle streghe': "Always united we win, long live the revolution!") to its hilarious fecal humor and word play—with 3D staging that happily puts to shame James Cameron and every other hack who's tried their hand at it these past several years—Adieu au langage overwhelms us with a deluge of recited texts, music and images, hardly ever bothering to slow down to let us catch our breath. Exhilarating and certainly not surprising—this is the guy who made Puissance de la parole after all!
The release of a new Godard film or video means a new encounter with texts, films and music often familiar from the filmmaker's earlier work—reworked and re-contextualized—as well as new discoveries to be sorted through and identified. This life-long interest in quotation...

As I mentioned in its introduction, my Steely Dan appreciation last week stemmed from an email exchange with several other people. And my article was not the last word by a long shot. One of the participants, Tony Alterman, is responding with his own album-by-album review, and his brother, CultureCatch's own Ian Alterman, is pitching in with his own observations. Here, with punctuation corrected and tangents omitted, is the origin of the debate and its continuation.
Tony Alterman:
Katy Lied -- Probably [Steely Dan's] fourth-best album, after Aja, Can't Buy a Thrill, and Royal Scam, in that order. Of course, fourth-best for Steely Dan is a bit like Beethoven's fourth-best symphony -- shades of difference here.
Ian:
Re: Steely Dan, it might be heresy, but I think Royal Scam is better than Aja. So my order would be Royal Scam, Aja, Can't Buy a Thrill, and then...well...it wouldn’t be Katy Lied.

“I think we’re all glad that they changed the name to Fantasia,” states Steve Martin dryly during his introduction of Fantasia 2000 regarding the film’s predecessor, which was originally called The Concert Feature. (Fantasia may be a slightly cooler-sounding title, but it’s not much more inviting to the average audience member than The Concert Feature.) That single line of dialogue represents the key to the creative struggle at the heart of Fantasia 2000, a perfectly entertaining film with no identity of its own. Though Martin is funny in his few moments on screen (all of the celebrity introductions in this new film are mildly charming in their own way, though they vary in tone from Martin’s wacky fourth-wall-breaking humor to regal sincerity, as with Angela Lansbury’s climactic appearance), the fact that a recognizable comedian needs to be one of our ushers into a world of...

The concept of the work of art that is unappreciated by the masses immediately, but gains a passionate and overwhelming following decades later is almost as old as time itself. A book, or piece of music, or painting, or sculpture, or film is unveiled to an indifferent public, save a few devout fans, and is only revived once newer generations approach it with fresh eyes. So many films we now consider to be the greatest of all time were not as warmly received (if they were received warmly at all) upon their initial release. Some classics, such as Citizen Kane and Vertigo, benefit now primarily from home media releases, repeated airings on Turner Classic Movies, and the impassioned voices of critics and historians to emphasize to general audiences how important and daring and dramatically satisfying these films truly are. Then there are the films that received a second wind of...

In his 30-year career as a composer, Carter Burwell’s film scores have run the veritable cinematic gamut. From composing for Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation., Where the Wild Things Are) to his work being the best parts of the Twilight saga, Burwell’s résumé is sporadic and unconventional, even for a man who makes film music for a living — it’s fitting, given his less-than-conventional roots as a cartoonist for The Harvard Lampoon and later as a vagrant New York punk rocker. Undoubtedly, Burwell’s become best known for the his collaborations with Joel and Ethan Coen. Last week, Sound on Sight ranked the films of the Coen Brothers, so what better way to take over The Big Score than with a similarly themed meditation on their work with Burwell? As much as the Coens’ filmography is defined by their trademark cynicism and wit, Burwell’s compositions are...

Theatre Review: ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ Returns With Ingénue Julia Udine, Enigmatic Cooper Grodin
Chicago – The Phantom in one word? An enigma. But he’s so much more. He’s lonely, desperately in love, a musical genius, misunderstood, vengeful, afraid and angry at a world that was so cruel to him. His shining beacon out of the darkness is his music – and falling for Christine. But The Phantom has to try to force her to feel the same way. He doesn’t want your pity. He just wants to be musical, loved and understood.
Play Rating: 4.5/5.0

As always, there are biases at play here; my greatest interests are symphonic music, choral music, and piano music, so that's what comes my way most often. There are some paired reviews; the ranking of the second of each pair might not be the true, exact ranking, but it works better from a writing standpoint this way.
1. Brahms: Symphonies Nos. 1-4; Academic Festival Overture, Op. 80 Tragic Overture, Op. 81; Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56a; 3 Hungarian Dances; 9 Liebeslieder Waltzes; Intermezzi, Op. 116 No. 4 & Op. 117 No. 1 Gewandhausorchester/Riccardo Chailly (Decca)
It is not easy, at this point in recording history, to match the giants of the baton in a Brahms cycle, but Chailly has done it (this is my fiftieth Brahms cycle, and I have more than another fifty Brahms Firsts, and upwards of thirty each of the other symphonies outside those cycles, so I've got some basis for comparison...

Every year around this time people flock to the TV or their movie collection to relive Christmas memory in the form of a classic film. It’s A Wonderful Life, Home Alone, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, and A Christmas Carol to name just a few classics that make for some great annual viewings.
If you want to step away from tradition and what your friends and family might expect you to pop in the video player this year, check out the list I’ve made below.
Here are my favorite non-traditional Christmas movies; alternative Christmas movies, scenes featuring Christmas or having been released during Christmas – each entry holds something a little different. They aren’t as predictable as your holiday standards, nor do they all practice cheer and goodwill. Some are naughty, some are nice, but they’re all wonderful. Enjoy!

A new leader board champ was crowned Monday at DWTS! The high-scorers took the coveted title from last week's victors, Amber Riley and Derek Hough, who fell a few spots after performing a spirited take on the same dance, in turn earning them three eights for a combined score of 24 points.

It’s Latin Night, DANCMSTRs! The 12 couples will dance the samba, rumba, paso doble, or jive on tonight’s week 2 performance show…which is also the results show. One pair will be eliminated based on last week’s voting results. It will be weird. No filler segments? No smalltalk interviews? No one clubbing me over the head to get me to shop at Macy’s? I’m not sure I can handle this!
I’ll update this post with the results as soon as the elimination happens. Update: And the eliminated couple is…

Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

Children's author and illustrator best known for Where the Wild Things Are
Maurice Sendak, who has died aged 83, was both one of the most individual and one of the most successful illustrators of the 20th century. Since 1951 his 90-odd titles have sold nearly 30m copies in the Us alone. His renowned work Where the Wild Things Are (1963), with worldwide sales of more than 19m, was a turning point not only in his own career but in the history of children's books.
The bulk of his work lay in illustrating other writers, but it was his own, far fewer, books which brought him countless international awards and academic honours, and made him the subject of many a thesis. At first, Where the Wild Things Are and its follow-up, In the Night Kitchen (1970), caused outraged shock at their robust portrayal of children's fears and aggression; Sendak's fantasy was always "rooted 10ft deep...

Maurice Sendak is dead, according to The New York Times. He was 83.
The Associated Press reported that Sendak died early Tuesday at a hospital in Danbury, Connecticut after having a stroke on Friday. His longtime caretaker and friend, Lynn Caponera, was with him.
The popular children's book author wrote "Where The Wild Things Are" in 1963. He won a Caldecott Medal for the book in 1964, and was adapted into a movie in 2009.
According to The New York Times, a posthumous picture book, "My Brother's Book," is scheduled to be published in February 2013.
Here's more from the Associated Press:
Sendak didn't limit his career to a safe and successful formula of conventional children's books, though it was the pictures he did for wholesome works such as Ruth Krauss' "A Hole Is To Dig" and Else Holmelund Minarik's "Little Bear" that launched his career.

Above the little red fire station on Main Street USA, a light flickers in a window. It's hardly recognizable in a modern day Disneyland filled with colorful marquees, laser light shows and nightly fireworks, but it's there, shining around the clock. Its soft glow illuminates a small apartment that's decorated with antiques, cranberry red glass lampshades, vintage instruments and a grandfather clock. It still looks today as it did when Walt Disney kept it as his personal home inside Disneyland.
The apartment isn't open to the public, but one frequent visitor is ready to open up about her fond memories of Walt's personal escape. Diane Disney Miller, Walt's daughter, is the founder and head of the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco. To celebrate the DVD re-release of "The Lady and the Tramp" and mark the 55th anniversary of the opening of Disneyland, she spoke to the Huffington Post about her father,...

The Voice is different from the other 47 reality singing competitions on TV right now “because it puts vocal ability first,” host Carson Daly boasted during Sunday night’s post-Super Bowl season premiere.
Of course, The Voice also stands out for a few other reasons: it puts Carson in a Kia (instead of an ominous 18-wheeler, like X Factor‘s Steve Jones, or turning him into Ford’s plaything, a la Ryan Seacrest); it doesn’t believe in giving airtime to ham sandwiches with no discernable singing talent; and it isn’t afraid to expose seven-eighths of Christina Aguilera’s heaving...

Avoid Glastonbury, a Star Trek convention, any film with a II, III or IV in the title and the London Marathon
✒I was touched by the story about the woman who, on turning 60, decided to do 60 things she had never done before. Some were simple, such as tackling a sudoku, others more tricky, like getting on to Eggheads. But it struck me that what would be really helpful would be a guide to 60 things not to do before you die. I can think of plenty.
Go to Glastonbury. Why? Middle-class people wading through mud, looking at Bono, of all people, performing 200 yards away. And stinking loos. No thanks. Or a Star Trek convention. Please!
Buy a ticket for any film with a II, III or IV in the title, with the exceptions of Godfather II, or The Madness of George IV.

Now that Miramax is its own entity, 2011 should see the rollout of several films that should have been released last year when the the Mickey Mouse ears at Disney were the keepers of these titles. One that barely made it out -- it received some fall film festival showings and with a cast like this, has since been released in other territories. Now the new owners at Miramax are being careful in releasing their "first" title by fusing with Tribeca Film who'll now take care of the theatrical launch of Massy Tadjedin's Last Night -- timed for a release this Spring. When the new co-host of “Ebert Presents At the Movies” called me the day of his TV debut to discuss the new show and his background, an interview that I thought would be twenty minutes (usually the norm with everyone else) expanded into over an hour-long discussion of film with Vishnevetsky seemingly running racetracks around whatever grasp and knowledge of film I have. A cinephile from Mubi.com handpicked by Roger Ebert from Chicago’s underground film society, (which includes a job at Bucktown’s Odd Obsession) Vishnevetsky had so much to say about every aspect of film, with his words chosen carefully and without even a single dash of the pretension that even cinema’s most celebrated essayists may exhibit. It’s...

America Lost And Found: The Bbs Story (Criterion) Perhaps the best DVD box set released this year, this ultimate cinefile stocking stuffer offered up by Criterion, the Rolls-Royce of home video labels, features seven seminal works from the late ‘60s-early ‘70s that were brought to life by cutting edge producers Bert Schneider, Steve Blauner and director/producer Bob Rafelson, the principals of Bbs Productions. In chronological order: Head (1968) star the Monkees, the manufactured (by Rafelson, et al), American answer to the Beatles who, like it or not, did make an impact on popular culture, particularly in this utterly surreal piece of cinematic anarchy (co-written by Jack Nicholson, who has a cameo), which was largely dismissed upon its initial release, but is now regarded as a counterculture classic. Easy Rider (1969) is arguably regarded as the seminal ‘60s picture, about two hippie drug dealers (director Dennis Hopper...

Update: Director Jon Favreau says his upcoming film about Disneyland Magic Kingdom, will Not be like A Night at the Museum. Favreau (Elf, Zathura, Iron Man 1 and 2) said on Sirius Satellite Radio's "Geektime!" that the storyline would be about a family in Disneyland who bring the attractions to life, but, "I don’t think it’s going to be mixing all the other movies. I think it’s going to be its own thing; I don’t think it will be like Night of the Museum. I want to make it a little bit spookier like the old Disney movies were and try to really capture that tone.
"This is something that I’ve always been drawn to and now to say ‘What characters do you want to use and how do you not make it Space Jam or like the Christmas parade with every character?’ How do you show...

Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 (Four-Disc Blu-ray/DVD combo)
Fantasia
Directed by: James Algar, Samuel Armstrong, Ford Beebe, Norm Ferguson, Jim Handley, T. Hee, Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, Bill Roberts, Paul Satterfield, Ben Sharpsteen
Cast: Leopold Stokowski
Running Time: 2 hr 5 min
Rating: G
Due Out: November 30, 2010
Plot: Seven classical pieces of music are animated in a film that’s meant to be the visual representation of what you hear when listening to these pieces.
Who’S It For? Unlike most animated films, this requires a more mature audience. Though there’s nothing objectionable in the material, it might be dull for kids.
Movie:
The most experimental of any of Disney’s animated feature films, Fantasia tells seven stories, all set to music. The most famous is The Sorcerer’s Apprentice starring Mickey Mouse wearing a red robe and blue hat covered in stars. Even people who haven’t seen the...

Hard to believe, but it’s been 70 years since Walt Disney first released his Technicolor triumph, Fantasia. Still one of his, and the studio’s, most ambitious projects, Fantasia remains a remarkable achievement of animation, sound and art. And now, for this first time on Blu-ray, this Disney classic is with us once more.
With dialogue used sparingly throughout, Fantasia is a collection of eight animated segments, all set to pieces of classical music. Conducted by Brit conductor Leopold Stokowski and performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra, each segment is introduced by composer and critic Deems Taylor, who explains the narrative, or lack thereof, the music involved, and the images we’re about to explore.
What follows in each segment is nothing short of genius on Disney’s part. Each one is a work of dedication, beauty, and what Disney himself would call ‘pure animation’. Making use of classic pieces Toccata and Fugue in D Minor,...

Disney is known for making movie based on the rides at their theme parks likes The Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean. But now it looks like they are going to develop a film based on the whole entire theme park itself called Magic Kingdom. Disney will use one of their theme parks as the setting for a family adventure, much like the Night of the Museum movies.
Battlestar Galactica TV series creator and writer Ronald Moore has actually already written a script based on his own idea for the project that will be produced by Marc Abraham and Eric Newman through their Universal-based Strike Entertainment production company. The initial plot for this film took place inside Disneyland.
Disney and the producers now want to move forward with developing this Magic Kingdom project but they will be bring on a new writer who has yet to be hired. I...

There's no competition between these two sword-and-sorcery epics – one dumbly solemn, the other cheerful and with elegant special effects
Except possibly during the brief Enlightenment of the 18th century, most people have believed in a Manichean battle between good and evil, darkness and light, and rarely more so than in these days of evil empires, war on terror, and the religious right preparing for Armageddon. Both of this week's Hollywood blockbusters are sword-and-sorcery epics of Manichean bent, one dumbly solemn, the other alertly cheerful.
The former sees M Night Shyamalan going further downhill mystically and in 3D, jettisoning the last few shreds of good remaining from The Sixth Sense more than a decade ago. In The Last Airbender, a primitive, possibly post-apocalyptic world is threatened with final extinction as the Fire nation aims to dominate the universe and vanquish forever the more congenial nations of Air, Water and Earth. But...

Will Disney's The Sorcerer's Apprentice provide the requisite box office magic? We weigh up the possibilities in another summer blockbuster preview...
What Is It?
Taking its inspiration from a scene in Disney's trippy Fantasia (the famous sequence where Mickey Mouse enchants various items of furniture, itself inspired by a Goethe poem), The Sorcerer's Apprentice takes the necromantic theme of the 1940s animated original and updates it to present-day Manhattan.
Nicolas Cage stars as Balthazar Blake, a sorcerer with the uncanny ability to start a car with a Paul Daniels-like wave of his hands. Jay Baruchel co-stars as the eponymous apprentice, an average youth and self-professed "physics nerd" whom Cage trains in the dark arts to help protect the city from arch nemesis Horvath (played by Alfred Molina, who provided Disney's other summer blockbuster Prince Of Persia with some of its better moments).

But with Sarah Palin eyeing the presidency and Scientology in trouble there are at least reasons to celebrate
Americans do holidays better than anyone and, dammit, we have the obesity problem to prove it: two-thirds of us are now officially overweight and that figure, like the dial on the bathroom scale, is only going to rise.
One reason for this happens tomorrow: Thanksgiving, which falls smack in between Diabetes Night (aka Halloween) and Obesity Day (aka Christmas.) Imagine having Christmas dinner, twice, less than a month apart. It's not enough that our portions are bigger anyway, we have the whole meal again.
But if there's anything more American than eating an enormous meal twice, it's finding a justification to do so. So while the holiday itself might elicit groans (of indigestion), there are plenty of things this year that are worthy of a third helping of sweet potatoes with marshmallows,...
