Storyline
Plot Summary |
Karim, a jewel collector, is one of the richest men in Bombay--which belies his humble beginning and poverty as little as a decade ago. His wealth was derived from a diamond he received from his jewel-merchant father, who was killed by marauding bandits for the jewels in his possession. Twice, 10 years ago, Karim was saved from people who would kill, steal, or lie to get the diamond. His two saviors were an Indian holy man and an American tourist. When Karim and American tourist Janice Darsey meet, it is mutual love at first sight. Their interracial romance has many obstacles to happiness, including the disapproval by Janice's aunt, with whom she is traveling through India. As Karim and Janice begin a courtship against all odds, two people from Karim's past may ultimately factor into whether it will be happily ever after for Karim and Janice together. Written by Huggo |

Did You Know?
Trivia | Ray Milland is in studio records/casting call lists for the role of "Captain," but he is not identifiable in the movie. The reason is that he was fired by director Jacques Feyder who judged him incompetent to play the part of a young Indian army officer. See more » |

Quotes |
Karim:
Miss Darsay, something has happened. Something very distressing. Janice Darsey: What? Karim: I can hardly bear to tell you. A baby scandal. Janice Darsey: Tell me! Karim: Come with me. [They walk toward some caged tigers] Janice Darsey: Well, what is it? Karim: Be patient. Behold the bride! [Pointing at a female tiger with a cub] Karim: She'll have to do some tall explaining. Janice Darsey: [Referring to the male tiger] Perhaps he's not very good at arithmetic! See more » |
