Can fate be changed?
Do we shape our own destinies?
Several characters debated those questions on Once Upon a Time Season 6 Episode 11, "Tougher than the Rest."
The flashbacks were kept to a minimum, which was a smart choice considering the alternate reality Emma and Regina faced.
But the small flashback did provide us with the answer to a much-asked question: how did Emma adopt the last name Swan?
It turns out she has August to thank for that as well as the story of The Ugly Duckling.
If you believe in something strongly enough, we all have the power to change our fate.

Well, it's been ever such a dramatic final week for Celebrity Big Brother - and that's just outside the house! It's been positively civilised in there compared to the Cbbbots row, but we've still had fist-chewingly cringey moments and rows so loud we've had to buy ear protectors.

Thirty years after starring as Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El in the DC Comics film Supergirl, Helen Slater will appear in the CBS reboot of the movie that made her famous.
"I've been acting forever so there can be patches where it can be very quiet, even though you are still a working actress," she tells People. "So I'm very happy about this."
Even though she's not allowed to reveal much about her character in the upcoming series, which stars Melissa Benoist and is set to premiere in November, Slater couldn't be more pleased with how the new version has turned out.

Every franchise has it. The ugly duckling. The movie that doesn't quite live up to the franchise. It's not surprising that more often than not, that movie is the third instalment. They tend to feel unnecessary; tacked on. An afterthought designed simply to cash in. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome kind of feels like that movie. But it's not.

It’s the weekend of Rio 2. Of bright colors and latin pop and Bruno Mars deciding he can act. And birds — big birds, small birds, bright birds, scheming Jermaine Clement birds. Rio 2 is the latest in a long tradition of bird-themed animated films; a tradition that dates back all the way to Disney’s early shorts like Chicken Little and The Ugly Duckling, and the feature-length The Three Caballeros. Then, sixty years of almost nothing. Once the digital age brought about a slew of new animated features, birds returned en masse. Our new heroes sported ruffled feathers and powerful wingspans. They also choked our cinemas to death with so many forgettable animated bird flicks. Surf’s Up, Happy Feet, Valiant, Free Birds and so forth. The future is dotted with more of the same with Storks, Angry Birds and The Penguins of Madagascar all planning to invade theaters in the next year or two. Now...

Why Watch? For starters, Bob Clampett was kind of a big deal and today is the 100th anniversary of his birthday. He directed cartoons for Warner Bros. from 1937 to 1947, a decade of boundlessly entertaining work. He was also a somewhat controversial character, mostly due to his insistence that he had created Bugs Bunny all on his own. That turns out to be entirely unfounded, of course, but at least Porky Pig was definitely his. The two of them face off in the first half of A Corny Concerto, the first time in WB history that two major characters shared a cartoon. The whole thing is a parody of Walt Disney’s work, Fantasia in particular. Elmer Fudd takes on the role of musicologist and conductor, rising from behind the orchestra to introduce “Tales from the Vienna Woods” in the style of Fantasia‘s Deems Taylor. He later returns for the second segment, “The Blue Danube...

Chicago – The fast, funny and brightly thematic “The Croods” is the latest animated epic to come out of DreamWorks Studios, and a couple of veterans in the cartoon game, Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders, are both the writers and directors of this vivid look into a prehistoric cave family and their evolutionary adventures.
“The Croods” are voiced by Nicolas Cage (Grug), Emma Stone (Eep), Catherine Keener (Ugga), Ryan Reynolds (Guy) and Cloris Leachman (Gran). They live to survive, but mostly hide in their dark cave from the outside elements. It is Eep who wants more out of life, and finds it with the adventurous Guy, who exists to enlighten himself.

In the far more sensitive age of 2004, before a souring economy and constant exposure to social media hardened our empathy for fellow human beings, the public rejected Fox’s The Swan as horrible and sadistic. For those who don’t remember, the show was a reality TV spin on Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairy tale The Ugly Duckling, in which a little bird is ostracized by his flock, until one day he undergoes a brutal series of plastic surgery procedures and put up against other birds who have all received the same treatment. Then he’s told that ...

The Hammer Vault was published late last year and was one of my favorite horror releases of 2011. Not only was it a great way to get new horror fans up to speed on the history of Hammer, but it contained rare and never before seen materials you could only find in the book.
I recently had a chance to talk with author and Hammer historian Marcus Hearn, who told me about the inspiration for the book, researching classic films, and the possibility of a new Dracula movie from Hammer:
Thank you for taking the time to talk with Daily Dead. For any readers who may be unfamiliar with your previous work, can you tell them a bit about your earlier Hammer book releases and relationship with the company?

Every year the Viff programmers throw in a handful of films that are youth friendly. Last year, one of my favourite moments of the festival was sharing a huge room with hundreds of children as Garri Bardin's The Ugly Duckling made children laugh and cry and though this year's kind friendly fare wasn't quite as endearing as the tale of the ugly duck that turns into a beautiful swan, Jan Sverák's tale of a little stuffed animal that overcame adversity to find his way home was equally enchanting.

Cinematic fairytales now come with a postmodern wink as standard. But a return to Disney innocence might be hard, writes Emily Barr – fairytales were never innocent to start with
Here is a one-question quiz for you. An animation of a Grimm fairytale is due to hit our screens in a fortnight. Do you think that Tangled is a straightforward, retelling of the brothers Grimm's version of Rapunzel? Or might it be a wildly postmodern, turning-convention-on-its-head rollercoaster ride with a kickass heroine, a wisecracking dude of a hero, and a crone who is scared of ageing, in place of the "wicked enchantress"?
Yes, gather round, children, and sit comfortably, for it is postmodern fairytale time once again. The smashing of storytelling convention is so normal that it has become a convention all of its own. Take a familiar story. Mix it up a bit and wink knowingly at the audience over the characters' shoulders.

Strictly Ballroom is an interesting film. It takes the timeless tale of The Ugly Duckling and sets it in a ballroom dancing atmosphere. Conceived by Australian writer/director, Baz Luhrmann, Strictly Ballroom is the first installment in The Red Curtain Trilogy, a trio of films that feature theater-related romance. The other films in the trilogy include Romeo + Juliet, and Moulin Rouge!.
Originally a stage musical, Strictly Ballroom tells the story of a ballroom dancer named Scott Hastings played with very little affect by Paul Mercurio. He has his own style of dancing which puts him in a little bit of trouble with his family and friends. His dance partner ditches him during tryouts for a ballroom dancing competition and it is then up to Scott to find another partner to practice with. He eventually finds help in Fran (Tara Morice), an “ugly duckling” who frequents the dance studio. Together they...

In a new bonus feature on the recently-released special edition DVD of his feature directorial debut, 1992′s Strictly Ballroom, Baz Luhrmann revisits the struggle of taking the story he first conceived as a 30-minute drama school production — the tale of a would-be-ballroom champion daring to do his own steps and partner with an ugly duckling beginner — from the stage to the screen. Nothing was easy: finding financing and a distributor, filming the climactic scene during the lunch break at a real competition (in front of an audience that didn’t feel obligated to stay when shooting ran long), even designing the poster.

Marcus Hearn has assembled an impressive collection of poster art for his latest book on Hammer and with Let Me In heralding Hammer’s return to the cinemas this week it seems like the appropriate time to cast an eye over the gaudy and wonderful history of the illustrious studio.
For those who associate Hammer with the twin towers of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee will be pleased to see various posters from the more popular classic Hammer horrors here with Hearn wisely including Draculas and Frankenstein galore, both UK and international posters.
Hammer’s foray into comedy and sci-fi is not overlooked and it’s a fascinating document of a studio who came to define a genre so completely that its name is intrinsically linked with it and the advertising of the film, awash with cleavage and carnage in equal measure, reflect not only the taste of the audience...

"Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling has won the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize. She is the first recipient of the 500,000 kroner ($93,352) award, which was handed out October 19 at a ceremony in Odense, Andersen's hometown.
The prize is given to a person who can be compared to Andersen, the Danish writer who was born in 1805 and wrote some 160 fairy tales and poems before his death in 1875.
Rowling said the author of such classics as "The Little Mermaid", "The Little Match Girl," "Thumbelina," and "The Ugly Duckling" had "created indestructible, eternal characters."
Rowling herself has made a significant contribution to the world of literature - seven books about the boy wizard have sold more than 400 million copies worldwide and have been translated into multiple languages.

Elf is a feel-good Christmas movie that brilliantly balances Will Ferrell’s typical silliness with James Caan’s perfectly delivered tough-guy cynicism. Whichever humor is better suited to your personal funny bone, there’s plenty of it to raise a smile or guffaw through to the film’s epilogue. With a touch of “The Ugly Duckling,” Ferrell’s title character grows [...]...

Rome -- The World Premiere of Christopher Honore's "Man at Bath", and the international premieres of "Karamay," a 356-minute political documentary from Chinese director Xu Xin and Aaron Katz's mystery story "Cold Weather" will be among the highlights of the 20-film main competition at the 63rd edition of the Locarno Film Festival, organizers said Wednesday.
Wednesday's announcement also revealed the lineup for the festival's famous Piazza Grande venue, which will include the European premiere of Jay and Mark Duplass' comedy "Cyrus" -- John C. Reilly, the film's star, will be on hand to receive a special tribute -- Gareth Edwards' science fiction drama "Monsters," and "Gadkii Utenok" (The Ugly Duckling) from first-time Russian director Garri Bardine.
The picturesque Piazza Grande, which seats more than 8,000, is the largest outdoor film venue in Europe.

Betty Suarez! We will miss you terribly!
With consistently declining ratings over the past few seasons, ABC announced Jan. 27 that it will not be renewing its award-winning comedy, Ugly Betty, for a fifth season.
“We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion,” ABC chief Steve McPherson said in a statement. “We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”
The ugly duckling-not-turned-swan show stars 25-year-old actress America Ferrera (who won both the 2007 Golden Globe and SAG Award for her role) as Betty — a 20-something who just doesn’t fit into the fashion plate mold at her high-fashion magazine job — and has been considered a major stepping stone in portraying the under-represented Hispanic population on the small screen.

Let's kick this off by acknowledging that this isn't really a list of the decade's best kid movies because -- let's face it -- kids like nearly everything they see in a movie theater, as evidenced by the upcoming "squeakuel" to 2007's Alvin and the Chipmunks. While we'd all like to think that our progeny shall be born with very our own impeccable taste, that's just not how it works, but I do suppose that bodily function jokes are an inevitable rite of passage that most adults learn to either tolerate or ignore and, in unfortunate cases, never outgrow. At this point, I could put together a sanitized list of films that avoid such jokes and call it sufficient, but that's not of much use here. After all, when it comes to a list like this that concerns films that have been in circulation for a matter of years, most...

Curious George. Harold and the Purple Crayon. Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. Classics each and every one. Call it a babysitter in a box or call it a great tool for educating your children, either way what we have on our hands here is 19 hours of story books new and old converted to a digital medium. Some of these genuinely are treasures reincarnated in an animated medium while others are newer stories that have yet to prove their heirloom mettle. However, your average tot won’t care as much about the legacy of a given story as they will about the presentation. A majority of the stories found on these 16 discs have received the full animation treatment from the humble illustration origins, but there are a few in the collection which are little more than scans of the pages being panned over by the camera. Depending on the age...

There’s a mixed bag waiting for Disney fans with Volume 5 of the Disney Classic Short Films collection. On one hand you have the unforgettable The Wind in the Willows with the awesome J. Thaddeus Toad and a genuinely touching version of The Ugly Duckling. But then you have four more cartoons all on the older spectrum making it hard to say whether or not the younger ones in your life will be able to sit still. This volume has the highest concentration of older cartoons as well as a newer cartoon that most kids won’t really latch onto – so I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to say that older children will get more out of this volume than the youngest ones.
The Wind in the Willows (1949)
Directed by James Algar & Jack Kinney, Written by Winston Hibler & Kenneth Grahame
God, what can really be said about this incredible classic.
