- Anita Ragusa, the daughter of a costume company owner, delivers a dress for a costume ball at the last minute. The snobbish customer doesn't like the design at first, but agrees to let Anita model it for her to decide whether to keep it. Charlie, a drunk partygoer, hears Anita singing behind a door. Upon opening it, he sees her in the dress and invites her to attend the festivities. She reluctantly agrees and sings for the other guests.—David Glagovsky <dglagovsky@verizon.net>
- Signor Ragusa (Adrian Rosely) is a costume company owner and designer and is preparing a dress for a last-minute order for a ball. His daughter Anita (Ruth Etting) finishes her operatic singing lesson. Professor Giuseppi advises the Ragusa that his daughter will never be more than a "torch-r" singer. The telephone rings. Ragusa whistles for his daughter Anita to answer it. On the line is Carolyn Chandler (Barbara Child) of Park Avenue insisting her dress be delivered in fifteen minutes as her guests have started to arrive. As the shop owner and professor are to attend a lodge meeting, Anita resolves to deliver the dress herself. The ball has already started. Charlie (Brian Donlevy) and his friend are drinking heavily and clearly feeling the effects of the cocktails. Anita arrives and enters Mrs. Chandlers dressing room who has been previously hastened by her brother to dress and greet their guests. When Anita reveals the dress, Mrs. Chandler is less than thrilled. Anita, however, convinces Mrs. Chandler that she should model the dress before Mrs. Chandler judges it. Anita now dressed in the gown, gazes into the mirror and imagines herself as Cinderella arriving at the ball as the prince tries to find the owners of the slipper. Shortly after she exits her carriage, the clock strikes midnight and Anita returns dressed in her humble street clothes. Her song wonders how long she will have to wait for her dreams to come true. Charlie, one of the drunk partygoers, hears Anita singing behind the door and insists she join him at the party downstairs. A couple has just ended performing a tap dancing routine when Charlie introduces Anita to the other guests. Charlie encourages Anita to sing. Anita is introduced and sings a song much to the delight of the guests. Mrs. Chandler is furious when she discovers that neither Anita or her gown is no longer in the dressing room and hastens to find her. A short time later, Signor Ragusa arrives to retrieve his daughter. Just then the Belmont's, the owners of the home, arrive. Mrs. Belmont identifies Mrs. Chandler as her personal maid and feels she overstepped the allowance to use their home while the home owners were away. They order the party guests to the servant quarters. Anita and her father are about to leave explaining how Anita was simply delivering a dress to Carolyn. The Belmonts find no fault with them and offer their car to take them home. The Ragusa ride in style in the back of the town car and ask the driver to detour to 5th Avenue on the trip home.
