The surprise success of shark movie “47 Meters Down” may be the best thing that ever happened to Byron Allen — or, the worst. His Entertainment Studios bought the title moments before Dimension Films shipped the inventory for its DVD premiere, and — with the help of some $30 million in P&A — it made $43 million at the box office this summer.
Now, Allen has spent the last month on a spending spree. Most recently, it’s “Hostiles,” Scott Cooper’s $50 million-budgeted Western starring Christian Bale that premiered at Toronto. The purchase price is unknown, but he’s reportedly committed to an Oscar-qualifying December release and about $15 million in P&A. That’s in addition to “Chappaquiddick,” another Toronto-Oscar title ($4 million acquisition, $16 million P&A) and Keanu Reeves’ sci-fi thriller “Replicas,” which cost $4 million for North America and is not an Oscar title, but comes with the promise of a wide release.

Savant uncovers the true, hidden ending to this Fritz Lang masterpiece. The moral outrage of Lang's searing attack on lynch terror hasn't dimmed a bit -- with his first American picture the director nails one of our primary social evils. Facebook shares are down in after-hours trading after it announced the startling stock and cash deal for the mobile messaging service — the biggest acquisition it has ever made. The companies say that the combo will help them “bring more connectivity and utility to the world by delivering core internet services efficiently and affordably.” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says WhatsApp “is on a path to connect 1 billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable.” Facebook plans to keep WhatsApp’s “core messaging product” and Facebook’s Messenger separate for now. “Here’s what will change for you, our users: nothing,” WhatsApp says in a blog post. Facebook also will maintain WhatsApp’s brand and keep its headquarters in Mountain View, CA. Co-founder and CEO Jan Koum will join Facebook’s board. The companies expect the deal to close later this year. If it doesn’t, then Facebook...

Following the repurchase, Third Point will beneficially own approximately 20 million shares, representing less than 2 percent of Yahoo's outstanding common stock. Loeb, who is also currently pushing Sony Corp. for changes, helped press for changes at Yahoo and played

The Canadian (photo: Thomas Meighan in The Canadian) Thomas Meighan is The Star of William Beaudine’s The Canadian (1926), which screened at the 2012 San Francisco Silent Film Festival. The credits feature his name far above everyone else’s. The basic story of The Canadian, scenario by Arthur Stringer from the 1913 W. Somerset Maugham play The Land of Promise, is similar in theme to Victor Sjöström’s later film The Wind (1928), but without the wind tempest and the murder. Instead, The Canadian concentrates on characterizations. After her rich aunt dies, stuffy, uptight Nora (Mona Palma) travels from London to a wheat farm owned by her brother (Wyndham Standing) in Calgary. She looks down with disdain at the simple, rustic life he lives in the country, with his wife, Gertie (Dale Fuller), and farm hands — especially the independent-minded Frank Taylor (Thomas Meighan). The Canadian starts out as an unpredictable and engaging tale.

Shares are up more than 15% in pre-market trading after Leonard Riggio disclosed in an SEC filing this morning that he plans to make an offer for the retailer’s main business. Barnes & Noble‘s founder, chairman and largest stockholder, with nearly 30% of the voting shares, says he’s interested in the stores and barnesandnoble.com, but not the Nook Media operation where B&N owns about 78.2% of equity along with Microsoft which has 16.8% and Pearson with 5%. Riggio’s proposal would “facilitate the Company’s evaluation of its previously announced review of strategic options for the separation of its investment in Nook Media,” he says. The purchase price “would be negotiated with the Board” and its advisers and “is currently contemplated” to include cash and assumption of debt. Riggio would include his equity and take on the debt needed to make the deal. The company has turned the negotiations over to Patricia Higgins,...

Q: There's a script I've been interested in for a while. I've been trying to raise some financing so that I can produce it. I think I'm close to successfully putting some financing together but I just found out that there's another producer that's suddenly interested in it. I'm afraid that I'm going to lose it. I want to option it but don't have the money yet. Anything I can do?
A: If you don't have the money right now to option it, unfortunately you're options are limited. Pun intended (as always).
The thing to keep in mind is that options don't all have to be the same. I think people tend to think option agreements must all follow the same structure: a certain payment for a 12 - 18 month option with a potential 12-18 month extension upon an additional payment. If you can convince the screenwriter (or the screenwriter's agent...

Not bad for a little black and white comic from the 80s.

William "Wild Bill" Wellman was always more renowned for his reportedly rough and tumble extra-cinematic resume (delinquent, pilot, stuntman) than for his mostly orthodox films -- from his nearly 40-year career, only a handful of astute genre epics remain lodged in the cultural front-brain today: "Nothing Sacred" and "A Star Is Born" (both 1937), "Beau Geste" (1939), and "The Ox-Bow Incident" (1943). They're all beautifully judged, visually eloquent and delicately acted films (compare Fredric March in "A Star Is Born" to the rest of his mannered '30s work, and you get a taste of Wellman's touch), particularly "Ox-Bow," wherein Dana Andrews and Henry Fonda are unnervingly in touch with the wages of frontier violence.
Still, Wellman worked long enough in the studio system to assure a certain homogeneity to most of his work, and so the payload of early Wellmans delivered in Warner/TCM's new Forbidden Hollywood Collection Volume Three have as...
