Sex & Nudity

Violence & Gore

  • This is a horror movie made during the Pre-Code Era, meaning that while there are no blood and guts, there are a lot of frightening moments that sometimes rely on the unseen. Not to mention even though the movie is INCREDIBLY tame by today's standards, it was edited heavily in America for many years, and was banned in many countries.

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Several people are seen drinking wine. One man is said to be drunk.
  • Several men are seen smoking and lighting cigarettes.
  • Smoking: Occasional pipe smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There are several scenes where men are screaming and obviously in great pain. This would be frightening not for what it shows but the pain imagined.
  • The experiments' appearances are modeled after victims of World War I. They might be frightening to younger children.
  • The final scenes will be pretty terrifying to young children, even by modern standards.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • Doctor Moreau hopes to get Lota, a panther transformed into a human woman, to mate with Edward to see if she can bear human-children. There is no actual sex or nudity, however, despite some advertisements (including the main poster) cover Lota's bare breasts, and Lota herself in the movie is scantily clad, mainly wearing a one-strap bandeau bikini top and a miniskirt.

Violence & Gore

  • Lota is killed while trying to flee, and the mutants revolt and turn on Dr. Moreau. What they do to him is not shown, but his screams are horrific and he is presumably mutilated by his equipment.
