Walt Disney and his animators used this short as a test to see if they could create realistic animation, a style they would later perfect in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937).
The film is based on the Greek legend of the abduction of Persephone. It was a major episode of Greek mythology and religion.
The film conflates Hades/Pluto, the Greek god of the Underworld, with Satan. The Underworld is conflated with Hell.
The film does not mention that Persephone and Hades were blood relatives. In Greek mythology, Persephone was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. Zeus and Demeter were both siblings of Hades. Which means that Hades was Persephone's uncle.
