'The Magnificent Ambersons': Directed by Orson Welles, and starring Tim Holt (pictured), Dolores Costello (in the background), Joseph Cotten, Anne Baxter, and Agnes Moorehead, this Academy Award-nominated adaptation of Booth Tarkington's novel earned Ricardo Cortez's brother Stanley Cortez an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography, Black-and-White. He lost to Joseph Ruttenberg for William Wyler's blockbuster 'Mrs. Miniver.' Two years later, Cortez – along with Lee Garmes – would win Oscar statuettes for their evocative black-and-white work on John Cromwell's homefront drama 'Since You Went Away,' starring Ricardo Cortez's 'Torch Singer' leading lady, Claudette Colbert. In all, Stanley Cortez would receive cinematography credit in more than 80 films, ranging from B fare such as 'The Lady in the Morgue' and the 1940 'Margie' to Fritz Lang's 'Secret Beyond the Door,' Charles Laughton's 'The Night of the Hunter,' and Nunnally Johnson's 'The Three Faces...

Ricardo Cortez: Although never as big a star as fellow 1920s screen heartthrobs Rudolph Valentino, Ramon Novarro, and John Gilbert, Cortez had a long – and, to some extent, prestigious – film career, appearing in nearly 100 movies between 1923 and 1950. Among his directors: Allan Dwan, Cecil B. DeMille, D.W. Griffith, James Cruze, Alexander Korda, Herbert Brenon, Roy Del Ruth, Frank Lloyd, Gregory La Cava, William A. Wellman, Alexander Hall, Lloyd Bacon, Tay Garnett, Archie Mayo, Raoul Walsh, Frank Capra, Walter Lang, Michael Curtiz, and John Ford. See previous post: “Remembering Ricardo Cortez: Hollywood's Silent “Latin Lover” & Star of Original 'The Maltese Falcon'.” First of all, why Ricardo Cortez? Since I began writing about classic movies and vintage filmmakers roughly 30 years ago, people have always been curious why I choose particular subjects. It sounds kind of corny, but I have always wanted to do original work and perhaps make a minor contribution to film history at the...

Ricardo Cortez biography 'The Magnificent Heel: The Life and Films of Ricardo Cortez' – Paramount's 'Latin Lover' threat to a recalcitrant Rudolph Valentino, and a sly, seductive Sam Spade in the original film adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's 'The Maltese Falcon.' 'The Magnificent Heel: The Life and Films of Ricardo Cortez': Author Dan Van Neste remembers the silent era's 'Latin Lover' & the star of the original 'The Maltese Falcon' At odds with Famous Players-Lasky after the release of the 1922 critical and box office misfire The Young Rajah, Rudolph Valentino demands a fatter weekly paycheck and more control over his movie projects. The studio – a few years later to be reorganized under the name of its distribution arm, Paramount – balks. Valentino goes on a “one-man strike.” In 42nd Street-style, unknown 22-year-old Valentino look-alike contest winner Jacob Krantz of Manhattan steps in, shortly afterwards to become known worldwide as Latin Lover Ricardo Cortez of...

Well this New Jersey bar is clearly on fire! For dozens of customers at The Wonder Bar near the Jersey Shore, Saturday night was supposed to be a casual night of good drinks and music from Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers. But the evening got a giant dose of rock 'n' roll when the one and only Bruce Springsteen showed up to perform more than a few songs. According to NJ.com, the "Born in the U.S.A." rocker arrived onstage slightly after 10:30 p.m. where he played a whopping 15 songs. In other words, lucky patrons got to experience a free two-hour show from the superstar performer. "Great show at The Wonder Bar tonight!!!" the business wrote on Facebook Saturday night....

Happy Birthday Al Jolson Between 1911 and 1928, Jolson had nine sell-out Winter Garden shows in a row, more than 80 hit records, and 16 national and international tours. Although he's best remembered today as the star in the first full length talking movie, The Jazz Singer in 1927, he later starred in a series of successful musical films throughout the 1930s. After a period of inactivity, his stardom returned with the 1946 Oscar-winning biographical film, The Jolson Story. His Broadway credits include Hold on to Your Hats, The Wonder Bar, Big Boy, Artists and Models, Bombo, and many more.

Pre-Code Hollywood studios spent millions transitioning their medium to sound and other new technologies that brought about major advances in photography, lighting, and set design. But there were still five million unemployed people in the United States and many more just getting by. The studios were losing money, many of them going bankrupt.
By 1930 the breadlines were longer than the ticket lines and people were slow to give up their hard earned money. They wanted to be entertained, they wanted to laugh and forget their troubles for just a while. Comedies, adventure, and musicals quickly became the most popular film genres of the time.

Hollywood took their stories to the far corners of the earth as places like Africa, the South Pacific, and the Far East became exotic settings for movies. An island kingdom somewhere in the Pacific with strange creatures, even stranger natives,...

Jeanne Crain: From Pinky to Margie Jeanne Crain, one of the most charming Hollywood actresses of the ’40s and ’50s, is Turner Classic Movies’ "Summer Under the Stars" featured player on Monday, August 26, 2013. Since Jeanne Crain was a top 20th Century Fox star for about a decade — a favorite of Fox mogul Darryl F. Zanuck — TCM will be showing quite a few films from the Fox library. And that’s great news. (Photo: Jeanne Crain ca. 1950.) (See also: “Jeanne Crain Movies: TCM’s ‘Summer Under the Stars’ Schedule.”) Now, my first recommendation is actually an MGM release. That’s Russell Rouse’s 1956 psychological Western The Fastest Gun Alive, an unusual movie in that the hero turns out to be a "coward" at heart: quick-on-the-trigger gunslinger Glenn Ford is reluctant to face an evil challenger (Broderick Crawford) in a small Western town. But why? Jeanne Crain is his serious-minded wife...

A-List actor Shia Labeouf is reportedly back in Chicago filming a new movie. And no, this time he hasn't been arrested. (Yet, at least.)
According to the Chicago Tribune, Labeouf -- who is no stranger to filming in the Second City, of course -- was in the city's Wicker Park neighborhood, walking out of an alley near the Damen Blue Line train station under the watchful eye of a small film crew and a police officer.
Labeouf was also seen Sunday at Underground Wonder Bar on the Near North Side, the Tribune reports. The Oh No They Didn't blog last week posted a photo of a man they said was Labeouf apparently in the midst of shooting a film scene on the Wells Street Bridge downtown.
The 26-year-old actor is reportedly filming "The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman" in town, a film which, according to its IMDb page, centers on...

Clarence Clemons's lost Christmas songs will be released next month. The late E Street Band saxophonist recorded 'There's Still Christmas' and 'The Christmas Song' in 1981, but the tracks were never officially released until now. Both songs will be premiered at Asbury Park, NJ's Wonder Bar on November 18 prior to their release on iTunes. Clemons played several of Bruce Springsteen's festive classics, including the singer's popular 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town' and (more)...

Asbury Park, N.J. (AP) — Fans of Clarence Clemons will get to hear the Big Man in time for Christmas. Two Christmas songs recorded by the E Street Band saxophonist will be released at The Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, N.J., on Nov. 18. Clemons died in June at age 69 after a stroke. Clemons sings the lead vocal on "There's Still Christmas." He also recorded a sax version of "The Christmas Song." The release party will be headlined by The Nick Clemons Band, which is fronted by Clarence's son Clarence Clemons III. Clemons' booming saxophone solos became a signature sound...

This holiday season, the Big Man won't just be in reference to Santa Claus. The late great Clarence Clemons is posthumously giving his fans a couple gifts of his own in the form of two previously unreleased Christmas songs. "There's Still Christmas" finds Clemons, the famed saxophonist best known for his powerful playing as part of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, singing lead vocals. The other track is an instrumental version of "The Christmas Song." Both tunes will have their debut during a release party at The Wonder Bar in (where else?) Asbury Park, N.J., on Nov. 18. The headlining act that evening will be, appropriately enough, The Nick Clemons Band, fronted by...

Taylor’s allegedly being courted to host ‘The X Factor’ — Is she trying to get attention by indulging in girl-on-girl acts onstage?
Taylor Momsen, 17, is the latest name tossed in the ring of possible judges for the Us version of The X Factor. But her wild girl-on-girl antics at a recent Pretty Reckless concert make it seem unlikely that producers will be understanding of her behavior!
Decked out in her typical costume of red fishnet stockings and a pair of stripper heels, the risque rocker-chick went wild at New Jersey’s Wonder Bar on March 18. The starlet pranced around stage wearing heavy makeup and spent much of the show grinding with girls on stage!
If selected to host The X Factor, Taylor would certainly bring a sense of edginess to the show. With her dirty mouth, bad-ass rocker attitude and looks like Courtney Love, this sassy blond bombshell might bring in the ratings.

Back last November I posted a clip from the 1942 musical Holiday Inn where Bing Crobsy and some chick take blackface to a whole new level which you can see Here.
However though blackface was pretty much common in early Hollywood movies perhaps no film took it to the extreme as this extended scene from the 1934 Warner Bros film Wonder Bar with Al Jolson. Jolson (or Jolie as they used to all him), was back then one of the highest paid and most popular entertainers of the period (and before) and made blackface his trademark such as in the The Jazz Singer. But this scene from Wonder Bar might have even stunned the most hard core Confederate sympathizer for a loop. Not surprisingly the studio has kept the film under wraps for decades and pretended it didn’t exist though now it’s available on the DVD-On-Demand Warner Archive label of which I have a copy.
