Lured Into the Spider's Den.
Space_Mafune10 February 2006
A spider who runs an hotel for flies in fact has foreboding, disturbing plans for his unsuspecting fly guests.

This cartoon is mainly focused on adapting the strange little song of the same name which we see the spider singing, adding an ominous curl at certain appropriate moments, as this one opens. The flies though they at first seem to be so much cattle to be harvested eventually prove to be of more substance than we initially thought as they end up putting up quite the fight of resistance indeed.

I have to say I enjoyed this one far more than perhaps many would as it carries out a somewhat morbid real world event (spiders do catch flies in their spider webs) and adds an entertaining, delightful twist to the proceedings. It helps that our spider here comes across as being particularly monstrous. Fun if slightly twisted.

An Entertaining, Dark & Creepy Cartoon
ccthemovieman-123 October 2007
As we read in the beginning, this hotel is "for flies only." As with a lot of cartoons, you get a lot of puns here, which is fine with me. The lyrics to the spider's song are both sadistic but funny. The first flies visiting the hotel are boxing champion ("flyweight division," of course, and his wife).

This spider is one of the creepiest characters I've seen in animated films, and I've seen probably a thousand. I'll bet he scared little kids watching this in the theater in 1936.

Make no mistake: this is a "dark" cartoon. Yes, it's not untypical with the theme of a bunch of "little people" ganging up and finding clever ways to beat an evil "big guy," but there aren't the usual amount of laughs in here, although it's smart and will keep your attention. Just beware of what you're in for, if you have little kids planning to see this.

Fascinating
TheLittleSongbird29 December 2014
While not among the Fleischer Brother's best or the most innovative, The Cobweb Hotel is fascinating and well worth checking out. The story is on the predictable side and a bit cutesy once you take away the grim content the cartoon has and of the characters they're all good but the only really really compelling personalities come from the flyweight and particularly the spider. The animation is top notch, with the characters ranging from the cute to the grotesque, the backgrounds are rich in detail and it's very atmospheric(very well suited for such a foreboding setting) while still with a good amount of colour. It's also filled with a lot of innovative touches that are distinctive of Fleischer, especially in the opening sequence with the use of animated characters amidst live action sets. The music is lively but with a very haunting vibe, a lot of the scores in Fleischer's films are lusciously and appealingly sentimental but this score had a more ominous edge to it that suited the cartoon well without feeling too different.

It is understandable as to why some would find The Cobweb Hotel weird, the content with the way the spider traps the flies and the lengths he goes into doing so is quite disturbing. But the cartoon is not all grim, because once the flyweight gets more to do it becomes the standard hero vs villain premise that is cute and energetic while also showing the spider at his most sinister. And while The Cobweb Hotel is not a hilarious cartoon or rich with laughs, it's not without funny moments except of the dark kind, the prime example is the lyrics of the spider's song. The characters do engage, while the flyweight is a likable hero that you cheer on in the fight the most interesting is the spider, who is quite a creepy villain and added to my sister's fear of spiders. Other than his design and the freaky imagery shown in his opening song with the flies trapped Jack Mercer's voice work was a large part of the spider's effectiveness as a character, he voices the character with a menacing and quite gravelly hiss and has never sounded creepier. All in all, not quite a Fleischer masterpiece but fascinating. 8/10 Bethany Cox

A Cute Little Toon
travisimo19 January 2004
The Cobweb Hotel is a cute little cartoon but it doesn't really stand out much. A huge part of the cartoon revolves around a song of the same name that is cute too but not all that memorable. Although I will say that The Cobweb Hotel benefits from the fly newlyweds that are the heroes of the picture. They're kind of fun and have their own personalities, particularly the husband who's a `flyweight champion.' I especially liked his fighting stance every time he felt he or his girl were in danger. It kind of reminded me of Donald Duck whenever he gets mad and is ready to fight. Overall, this is not too shabby of a cartoon.

My IMDb Rating: 6/10

Weird
sbibb110 July 2004
Cartoon produced by the Fleischer studio, and released by Paramount pictures on May 15, 1936. Cartoon is in the public domain and can be found on numerous different DVDs and VHS tapes. This cartoon is one of the odder cartoons made by the Fleischer studios, and can be found on collections of Weird cartoons, and even on some DVDs of horror movies.

Cartoon is about a spider who runs a hotel in an old roll-top desk. The rooms are adorned with fly paper rugs and spiderweb beds. A cute couple, a prize fighter fly and his bride arrive and check in at the hotel, only to be attacked by the spider. By the end of the cartoon the spider is now the one captured, and all the other flys at the hotel are now free.

Actually, for the Fleischers, this is a comparatively "normal" cartoon.
llltdesq6 July 2003
The Cobweb Hotel is a cute, somewhat dated, cartoon with some very good moments. Strange thing is, I keep reading and hearing comments from other people that range from "scary" to "weird and strange", which tells me people haven't seen a whole lot of the output of Fleischer Studios! Though the Fleischers did do some more sedate work than this one, compared to some of the earlier shorts, this one is downright "normal" (whatever that is, anyway).

Part of the Color Classics series (where Max Fleischer tries to out-Walt Disney, instead of being Max hisownself), this is on the DVD release Somewhere In Dreamland, which is an excellent purchase. Try and chase down a copy, if you can. Well worth the effort. Recommended.

"Come into my parlour, please do!!!" Warning: Spoilers
The setup of this fun and rather twisted short cartoon is absolutely brilliant, it's about an evil slobbery spider who has set up a death trap hotel that's "For Flies Only", and he's been busy snapping up any unwary young flies who are dumb enough to actually book into such an establishment! Normally once flies check in they don't check out, but this time the spider picks the wrong couple to chow down on and his murderous premises are shut down for good by a scrappy little turn-of- the-century take on all newcomers kinda fly guy! I like the see-sawing rhythm of the spider's song. He looks something more like an ape crossed with a hunchback than an actual arachnid, but I found that cartoony rubber-limbed form to be more creepy, especially when he looms up to the camera whilst swinging. His scratchy voice sounded a bit like the Cryptkeeper. I can do a dead-on impression! The artwork is a bit rough but very well detailed and rich in the special way that only Fleischer animations could ever be. I love all the small details in the 'hotel', and how as you look a little closer you can make out what everything's really made out of, like how the entire thing's a desk and there's matchsticks for bedposts, stuff like that. It's really visually clever and fascinating, and they come up with some creative gags out of it. There was an aspirin Gatling gun, which was certainly a new one to me! And it's probably the only time ever that you'll get to see a fly engage a spider in a sword fight, a very cool and random wow moment! When they would later make the motion picture classic "The Incredible Shrinking Man", when it gets to the part where the man slays the terrifying spider with the pin, I can't help but wonder if this is where they got the inspiration from! It's quite dark at points, as it shows all the fly victims trapped in their phony rooms, stuck to cobweb beds and flypaper rugs, squealing in terror, it's like they're in little torture chambers, it has an element of horror in it. The idea of the spider's hotel is eerie enough by itself without needing any of the dancing demons or warping craziness that made the best Betty Boop shorts stand out. I've seen a thousand of these old vintage cartoons but I haven't seen that many with as much suspense as this one, or any at all where the girl helps to save the day! And there's totally a moral in it, beware of strangers. And especially strange spiders! Thank you Fleishers, god bless ya!

Okay.
planktonrules24 September 2013
A newlywed couple of flies see a place called The Cobweb Hotel. What they don't realize is that it's a trap--run by an evil spider who is waiting to ensnare them just like its other victims. Fortunately, when the pair discover the truth, they work together--freeing the other victims and mounting an all-out war on the wicked spider. Logically speaking, we SHOULD be rooting for the spider, as flies are pests! In light of this, I really didn't understand the message to this film! Despite being in nice looking Technicolor, the Fleischer Brothers' film "The Cobweb Hotel" is a mediocre sort of film--not bad, not particularly good. It's not sickeningly sweet but it also fails to engage the viewer.

Welcome to the Cobweb Hotel
Horst_In_Translation23 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"The Cobweb Hotel" is an American color cartoon from 1936, so this one has its 80th anniversary. To show you how old this cartoon is you need to imagine it is from the very same time that Hitler held the Olympic Games in Berlin. Sounds ages ago, doesn't it? Well, it is. It runs for 8 minutes almost and is a Fleischer Studios production directed by Dave Fleischer himself and the one voicing the character is Jack Mercer, maybe the best thing about this one. Looking at what year this is from, the animation is decent too I guess as the Golden Age of Animation was moving closer. But story-wise, it is a bit meh as this is the story of a big scary spider running a hotel and as all the guests are flies, you know the spider's plan. But these spies are very resilient, which turns this into a David vs. Goliath film sort of, with many tiny Davids in fact. The weakest aspect here is really the comedy. It's all about slapstick, never really about wit, which is a bit of a pity and not to my liking at all. This film has some strengths as I described, but story/comedy is king here and especially from that perspective it wasn't a satisfying watch. I suggest you skip this one.

Here's a good one. While the flies are hideously irritating and drawings are pretty ugly, the theme provides something interesting for a kid. I was about 3 when I first saw it, and it could beat Pocahontas any day. The freakish spider would give me a thrill as well as the fact that this one features a nonstereotypical female heroine. Consider how old this is and it'll hit your top ten. In the cartoon are. that is. Why doesn't anyone make cartoons like these anymore? Other hits you'll love are those WWII cartoons, and I believe Cobweb Hotel is a spoof on Hitler (Death camps, posing as a nice guy). I pity the kids growing up on Yugioh and Pokemon, these things are worth watching.

Great Short

The Cobweb Hotel (1936)

**** (out of 4)

Excellent short from Dave Fleischer has a newlywed fly couple showing up at a hotel ran by a spider. The two soon realize that the rooms are made of cobwebs and that the spider is just using the place to lure in food. Yes, you have to wonder why flies would book a room at a place called "The Cobweb Hotel" but just leave logical questions out of it and have a great time. This here is a highly entertaining short that works on many levels including the creepy animation. The film starts off with a very creepy spider singing a creepy song so I'm sure this thing could scare some young kids. From here we see the spider go on the attack and then the flies eventually fight back in some very creative ways. THE COBWEB HOTEL features some wonderful animation and of course the colors also look terrific.
