Quotes

  • Madeleine de Beaupre : I was really afraid.

    Tom Bradley : Of what?

Madeleine de Beaupre : Of you.

Tom Bradley : Huh. Well there was no need of it. I paid you a few compliments. I told you how charming and how lovely you were, and I'd still repeat it. But I didn't do anything.

Madeleine de Beaupre : No, but you intended to.

Tom Bradley : I did not!

Madeleine de Beaupre : You had it in your eyes.

Tom Bradley : I didn't know it showed.

  • Tom Bradley : You made a mistake, Aunt Olga. You should have told that doctor that if he really loved you he would have helped you over that wall. I'm sure it would have been a great shock to him when he heard about it. He probably would have called you every name under the sun. He probably would have taken you over his knee and given you the spanking of your life!

    [turns to Madeleine]

Tom Bradley : Does it still hurt darling?

Madeleine de Beaupre : Just a little. Don't worry.

  • Tom Bradley : There is no glamour about me. I'm not a king or a prince or a count. Not even an elk.

  • Tom Bradley : Madeleine. Do you mind if I ask you a very personal question?

Madeleine de Beaupre : [expecting something romantic]  No.

Tom Bradley : Are you eating those eggs?

  • Tom Bradley : Two days ago I didn't know anything about you.

Madeleine de Beaupre : Two days ago you didn't even exist.

Tom Bradley : You're wrong about that. I did exist. But I didn't live.

Madeleine de Beaupre : It's crazy, isn't it?

    Tom Bradley : But wonderful.

Madeleine de Beaupre : A certain Mr Bradley comes from America. That's all I know about you.

Tom Bradley : All I know about you is: you stole my car and I'm insane about you.

  • Tom Bradley : You're going to Spain, I'm going to Spain. I'm on a vacation and it doesn't make any difference where I go right? But lets agree on one thing - let's not go so fast, let's take our time and see the mountains and little villages, and enjoy it. People will wait for you. I would.

  • Tom Bradley : If I'm goin' around with a girl and I don't like her anymore, I'm glad to get rid of her. But after I get rid of her, oh boy!

  • Tom Bradley : Well, that licked me. First you throw mud in your face and now you want me to kiss your hand.

    [kisses Madeleine's hand]

    Tom Bradley : Continental!

  • Tom Bradley : You know, all you need is a frame now and you'd be a masterpiece.

Madeleine de Beaupre : All I need is a nice, soft bed.

  • Tom Bradley : I sounds funny but, I don't seem to be able to entertain you.

Madeleine de Beaupre : I hate to be entertained. Please don't do it.

  • Madeleine de Beaupre : Why don't you go to bed and get a good rest?

Tom Bradley : I've tried to, but, that Spanish moon. You see him up there? It's strong, isn't it. It was shining right into my window.

Madeleine de Beaupre : Why don't you draw the curtain?

Tom Bradley : I see. Turn off the moon, turn on the moon. Just as you like. Some people can do that easier than others.

  • Tom Bradley : You weren't even listening.

Madeleine de Beaupre : Oh yes, I was. I heard everything you said. About yourself. Detroit. Your work. You love it and you hate it. Isn't that the way you feel about me?

Tom Bradley : Not exactly. I never said I love you.

Madeleine de Beaupre : [laughs]  Liar!

  • Madeleine de Beaupre : Maybe I dreamed when I was asleep. Oh, yes, I must have been dreaming; because, I heard your voice saying that you were crazy about me and that you loved me. But, I'm sure you didn't mean it.

Tom Bradley : I mean everything I say.

Madeleine de Beaupre : No, you don't. "Madeleine, I love you. When you wake up I'm going to take you in my arms and kiss you."

[looks up at Tom, submissively, he takes her in his arms for long romantic kiss]

Tom Bradley : Madeleine, so you weren't asleep?

Madeleine de Beaupre : Not quite.

Tom Bradley : Why did you let me go through all this torture? Why didn't you tell me?

Madeleine de Beaupre : I wasn't sure if I liked you enough.

    Tom Bradley : And now?

Madeleine de Beaupre : I still don't know.

    [long romantic kiss]

  • Tom Bradley : I have a confession to make, Madeleine. I lied to you and I think you should know it before we get married. I told you I make a hundred and fifty a week. I only make a hundred and a quarter.

  • Tom Bradley : I want to drink to my hostess - who first stole my car and then stole my heart. My car was insured, but, my heart wasn't.

  • Tom Bradley : Do you think there's going to be a war?

Carlos Margoli : I hope not. I'm always in favor of peace. But, as the situation is at the moment, with nobody minding his own business, you never can tell what may happen.

Madeleine de Beaupre : Tell me, Tom, what would America's attitude be if it really came to a crisis?

Aunt Olga : If America is wise, it won't ever mix in European affairs.

Tom Bradley : But, sometimes we get dragged in and, then, of course, we'd have to go through with it.

Carlos Margoli : You can't underestimate America. That would be a foolish thing to do. It's a big country.

Tom Bradley : Six feet - three.

  • Clerk to Perform Wedding : That's not your marriage license.

Tom Bradley : Oh, yes it is.

[Looking at it, he turns to Madeleine]

Tom Bradley : It's your parole.
