Quotes
-
Aristide Duvalle : Cigarette?
Madeleine de Beaupre : No, thank you, I don't smoke.
Aristide Duvalle : Nor do I. A barbaric habit. One fills one's lungs and other people's eyes with smoke.
-
Madeleine de Beaupre : I was really afraid.
Tom Bradley : Of what?
Madeleine de Beaupre : Of you.
Tom Bradley : Huh. Well there was no need of it. I paid you a few compliments. I told you how charming and how lovely you were, and I'd still repeat it. But I didn't do anything.
Madeleine de Beaupre : No, but you intended to.
Tom Bradley : I did not!
Madeleine de Beaupre : You had it in your eyes.
Tom Bradley : I didn't know it showed.
-
Tom Bradley : You made a mistake, Aunt Olga. You should have told that doctor that if he really loved you he would have helped you over that wall. I'm sure it would have been a great shock to him when he heard about it. He probably would have called you every name under the sun. He probably would have taken you over his knee and given you the spanking of your life!
[turns to Madeleine]
Tom Bradley : Does it still hurt darling?
Madeleine de Beaupre : Just a little. Don't worry.
-
Tom Bradley : Madeleine. Do you mind if I ask you a very personal question?
Madeleine de Beaupre : [expecting something romantic] No.
Tom Bradley : Are you eating those eggs?
-
Tom Bradley : Two days ago I didn't know anything about you.
Madeleine de Beaupre : Two days ago you didn't even exist.
Tom Bradley : You're wrong about that. I did exist. But I didn't live.
Madeleine de Beaupre : It's crazy, isn't it?
Tom Bradley : But wonderful.
Madeleine de Beaupre : A certain Mr Bradley comes from America. That's all I know about you.
Tom Bradley : All I know about you is: you stole my car and I'm insane about you.
-
Carlos Margoli : We are strung together on the same rope of pearls,
[ironically]
Carlos Margoli : 'Countess'.
Madeleine de Beaupre : It was very gracious of you to elevate me to that lofty station. And I hope 'Your Highness' won't be too insulted but I have definitely made up my mind to remove the crest from my stationery, my lingerie, and my life!
-
Madeleine de Beaupre : Doctor, oh, it's too embarrassing.
Dr. Maurice Pauquet (mistakenly listed in end credits as Dr. Edouard Pauquet) : You are talking to your doctor, Madame.
Madeleine de Beaupre : When we were married, he was such a strong, virile man. And now - oh, doctor, sometimes he imagines he's a schoolgirl running away from school. And do you know he has given up pajamas and taken to wearing nightgowns.
Dr. Maurice Pauquet (mistakenly listed in end credits as Dr. Edouard Pauquet) : I don't like that.
Madeleine de Beaupre : I don't like it either.
-
Aristide Duvalle : If you should change your mind, let us say within the next two years, I will only be too glad to take them back.
Madeleine de Beaupre : You don't know me Mr. Duvalle. If I take these pearls, you will never see them again. You can depend on that.
-
Carlos Margoli : You're not trying to double-cross me, by any chance?
Madeleine de Beaupre : Don't be vulgar.
Carlos Margoli : I'm sorry, my close association with lawyers has coarsened me.
-
Madeleine de Beaupre : He seemed to be a man of very good taste. He liked me.
Carlos Margoli : Didn't I tell you not to mix love with business?
Madeleine de Beaupre : Don't be absurd, Carlos. This man interests me as much as you do. That should satisfy you.
Carlos Margoli : Now, I want to tell you something, Madeleine. I think I've always behaved as a gentleman.
Madeleine de Beaupre : And I hope you continue to do so.
-
Carlos Margoli : Why do you suppose she did it?
Madeleine de Beaupre : Why? Wrong education. That's the trouble with our whole aristocracy. They think they're living in the Middle Ages. No respect for other people. Treating everyone like subjects. That's what starts revolutions!
Carlos Margoli : I guess you're right. She could start a revolution in me anytime.
-
Tom Bradley : You know, all you need is a frame now and you'd be a masterpiece.
Madeleine de Beaupre : All I need is a nice, soft bed.
-
Tom Bradley : I sounds funny but, I don't seem to be able to entertain you.
Madeleine de Beaupre : I hate to be entertained. Please don't do it.
-
Madeleine de Beaupre : Why don't you go to bed and get a good rest?
Tom Bradley : I've tried to, but, that Spanish moon. You see him up there? It's strong, isn't it. It was shining right into my window.
Madeleine de Beaupre : Why don't you draw the curtain?
Tom Bradley : I see. Turn off the moon, turn on the moon. Just as you like. Some people can do that easier than others.
-
Tom Bradley : You weren't even listening.
Madeleine de Beaupre : Oh yes, I was. I heard everything you said. About yourself. Detroit. Your work. You love it and you hate it. Isn't that the way you feel about me?
Tom Bradley : Not exactly. I never said I love you.
Madeleine de Beaupre : [laughs] Liar!
-
Madeleine de Beaupre : Maybe I dreamed when I was asleep. Oh, yes, I must have been dreaming; because, I heard your voice saying that you were crazy about me and that you loved me. But, I'm sure you didn't mean it.
Tom Bradley : I mean everything I say.
Madeleine de Beaupre : No, you don't. "Madeleine, I love you. When you wake up I'm going to take you in my arms and kiss you."
[looks up at Tom, submissively, he takes her in his arms for long romantic kiss]
Tom Bradley : Madeleine, so you weren't asleep?
Madeleine de Beaupre : Not quite.
Tom Bradley : Why did you let me go through all this torture? Why didn't you tell me?
Madeleine de Beaupre : I wasn't sure if I liked you enough.
Tom Bradley : And now?
Madeleine de Beaupre : I still don't know.
[long romantic kiss]
-
Madeleine de Beaupre : I fooled you. I lied to you. There's only one true thing you know about me. I did love you. I do love you.
-
Tom Bradley : Do you think there's going to be a war?
Carlos Margoli : I hope not. I'm always in favor of peace. But, as the situation is at the moment, with nobody minding his own business, you never can tell what may happen.
Madeleine de Beaupre : Tell me, Tom, what would America's attitude be if it really came to a crisis?
Aunt Olga : If America is wise, it won't ever mix in European affairs.
Tom Bradley : But, sometimes we get dragged in and, then, of course, we'd have to go through with it.
Carlos Margoli : You can't underestimate America. That would be a foolish thing to do. It's a big country.
Tom Bradley : Six feet - three.
-
Carlos Margoli : You're not trying to double-cross me, by any chance?
Madeleine de Beaupre : Don't be vulgar.
Carlos Margoli : I'm sorry. My close association with lawyers has altered me.
-
Carlos Margoli : Didn't I tell you never to mix love with business?
Madeleine de Beaupre : Don't be absurd, Carlos. This man interests me as much as you do. That should satisfy you.
-
Carlos Margoli : This is a fine mess. And all this work for nothing. No, we must get those pearls back. Now who was this man?
Madeleine de Beaupre : An American.
Carlos Margoli : Now, that's a great help. He ought a be easy to find. There are only about a hundred million Americans. What was his name?
Madeleine de Beaupre : I don't know.
Carlos Margoli : Good! Now we won't be hampered in our search by knowing his name. What did he look like?
Madeleine de Beaupre : He was tall.
Carlos Margoli : Hmm. One more little clue like that and we ought to have him in our hands. Any other distinguishing traits?
Madeleine de Beaupre : Well, he seemed to be a man of very good taste - he liked me.
