- During a rodeo, The Three Mesquiteers perform their final acts of the season in a sideshow at Harris and Rigby's Circus. The Mesquiteers consist of Lullaby Joslin, a ventriloquist who can put a deck of cards into his mouth and spit them out one by one; strongman Tucson Smith, who lifts five hundred pounds; and sharpshooter Stony Brook. After owner Jeff Harris refuses to sell out to his partner Tom Rigby, Rigby plants counterfeit bills in Harris' strongbox, and Harris is sentenced to ten years in prison. He appoints The Three Mesquiteers to be guardians of his daughter Nancy, whom they want to adopt, but because her governess, Ellen Reed, thinks them irresponsible, Judge Blake gives them a week to prove that they are fit guardians. The three capture Rigby's cohorts, Dan and Harry, with counterfeit money, but Rigby's henchman Jake shoots Dan and Harry, and Rigby accuses The Three Mesquiteers. After a witness testifies for them, Ellen asks them to give her their guns and they comply. Rigby's men follow them out of town, and after the three split up, Tucson jumps one man, gets his gun and shoots another. Stony, meanwhile, trips up the horses of other gang members with a wire, and Lullaby, throwing his voice, makes his captors think that he has them covered, and they toss down their guns. In town, Judge Blake, angry that The Mesquiteers have caused so much commotion, decides to send Nancy to an institution unless one of them marries. Tucson and Stony ask Ellen to choose between them, but she refuses, to their relief, until she learns of Nancy's fate, and then agrees if the marriage will be "strictly business." After Stony, to his discomfort, wins Ellen on a cut of the cards, Lullaby plays cards with Jake and wins some of the counterfeit money. Following the game, Rigby's men capture Lullaby, but as they take him to their hideout where the money is printed, Lullaby leaves a trail of cards, which he spits from his mouth. Rigby has counterfeit money planted on Lullaby and orders his men to have Lullaby's carriage run off a cliff, but Tucson and Stony, interrupted during Stony's wedding, learn of Lullaby's predicament, then rescue him and capture Rigby and his men. Harris is released and Lullaby performs a marriage ceremony for two of his dummies.
