A Night at the Opera
Blu ray
Warner Archive
1935/ 1.33:1
Starring The Marx Brothers, Allan Jones, Kitty Carlisle
Directed by Sam Wood
When the Marx Brothers bolted the scrappy but frugal Paramount for the gilded halls of Metro Goldwyn Mayer, fans of the comedians feared the worst—would the anarchic trio maintain their punk rock cred or had they sold out for the Top 40? The answer was revealed in their first go-round with the studio, 1935’s A Night at the Opera. And it was a standoff—though the Brothers remained world class provocateurs, MGM survived with its reputation intact and a big hit on their hands.
Opera‘s basic plot stays close to the Marxian blueprint; three agents of chaos, a fast-talking con man, a pun-happy piano player, and a tongue-tied hedonist, infiltrate a revered if musty institution, upend said institution, and go on their merry way. Though that premise...

Four episodes of 30 Rock will be removed from subscription streaming services, purchase platforms, and will no longer air on traditional TV, according to Deadline. The episodes were pulled at the request of NBCUniversal and 30 Rock executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. The episodes will be taken down this week.
“As we strive to do the work and do better in regards to race in America, we believe that these episodes featuring actors in race-changing makeup are best taken out of circulation,” Fey wrote in a statement. “I understand now that ‘intent’ is not a free pass for white people to use these images. I apologize for pain they have caused. Going forward, no comedy-loving kid needs to stumble on these tropes and be stung by their ugliness. I thank NBCUniversal for honoring this request.”

One night in 1950 during an especially frenetic episode of The Colgate Comedy Hour, Jerry Lewis stepped away from Dean Martin to address the camera point blank – “You get the idea – I’m supposed to be a 9-year-old kid.” Hardly a revelation – especially to Red Skelton, the reigning king of prepubescent horseplay.
That reign was begun in 1923 and fueled by broadly played gags that were both leering and infantile – like a burlesque version of The Bad Seed. One of Skelton’s most grating characters was a wisecracking brat called the “mean widdle kid” – wearing short pants and lace collar while delivering grown-up one-liners in baby talk he was a less feral version of Joe Besser’s...

Graphic novel Giraffes on Horseback Salad puts together the Salvador Dalí Marx Brothers film that was never made.
The iconic surrealist artist Salvador Dalí was obsessed with the anarchic harpist Harpo Marx and wrote a screenplay for what he hoped would become a Marx Brother movie. Or Dalí didn't hope, as he considered the screenplay art enough. The upcoming graphic novel Giraffes on Horseback Salad pieces together what some papers have called one of the greatest movies never made. Written by Josh Frank, Giraffes on Horseback Salad comes out from Quirk Publishers on March 19.
"Grab some popcorn and take a seat," reads the official book synopsis. "The curtain is about to rise on a film like no other! But first, the real-life backstory: Giraffes on Horseback Salad was a Marx Brothers film written by modern art icon Salvador Dalí, who’d befriended Harpo. Rejected by MGM, the script was thought lost forever.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” may not be hitting theaters until Nov. 2, but the Queen biopic is ramping up the buzz with a new fashion collaboration with Lucky Brand.
The L.A.-based denim company has launched a collection of vintage-inspired Queen concert tees to coincide with the Rami Malek film’s release this fall. The capsule includes three t-shirts for women and three for men, with prices starting at $39.50.
Lucky Brand went into the band’s archives to find vintage designs and graphics for the collection. One shirt features an image of late frontman Freddie Mercury (portrayed by Malek in the film), while others feature reworked album art, including a women’s tee inspired by the cover of Queen’s seminal 1976 album, “A Day at the Races.”
The limited-edition collection celebrates the free-spirited style of the band, often showcased through Mercury’s ornate, glam-rock outfits..

Above: 1960s French stock poster for Marx Brothers revivals. This weekend New York’s Film Forum begins a week-long series entitled The Marx Brothers & The Golden Age of Vaudeville which is as good an excuse as any to look at the representation of the greatest sibling comedy team in cinema through movie posters. It has long been a tradition in movie poster illustration to render comedy stars as caricatures—often with oversized heads on small bodies—and Groucho, Harpo and Chico were a caricaturist’s dream. (Zeppo, the straight man, less so, but he left the act after Duck Soup in 1933, and re-release posters for the films he appeared in tend to ignore him, as in the Belgian Duck Soup and the Danish Horse Feathers below). With their distinctive props—Groucho’s oversized greasepaint mustache and cigar, Harpo’s curly blonde wig and Chico’s Alpine hat—the threesome could...

44 years ago today, “The Brady Bunch” welcomed a very exciting guest star. The Monkees’ heartthrob Davy Jones appeared on the December 10, 1971 episode of the classic sitcom. Jones played himself in the episode, which had Marcia Brady (president of the Fillmore Junior High Davy Jones Fan Club) trying to get Jones to sing at her prom. He grants her wish, and then some — he’s her prom date too! Other notable December 10 happenings in pop culture history: • 1966: The Beach Boys’ single “Good Vibrations” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. • 1967: Otis Redding died in a plane crash. • 1969: “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” opened in theaters. • 1976: Queen’s 7” single “Somebody to Love” was released in the U.S. On the same day, their album “A Day at the Races” was released in the U.K. • 1992: The musical “My Favorite Year” opened on Broadway. • 1998: The Amnesty International...

By 1935, the Marx Brothers already had five movies to add to their already extensive Broadway and Vaudeville resume, among them the legendary Duck Soup and the near-classics Animal Crackers and Monkey Business. As we’ve often seen, however, some of our most beloved Hollywood favorites flopped upon first release. 1933’s Duck Soup, specifically, was the last of a five-picture deal the Brothers had at Paramount, and its commercial failure would spell a parting of the ways between the studio and the iconic comedy team.

Marx Brothers fans will be delighted, as TCM is presenting no less than 11 of their comedies, in addition to a brotherly reunion in the 1957 all-star fantasy The Story of Mankind. Non-Marx Brothers fans should be delighted as well – as long as they're fans of Kay Francis, Thelma Todd, Ann Miller, Lucille Ball, Eve Arden, Allan Jones, affectionate, long-tongued giraffes, and/or that great, scene-stealing dowager, Margaret Dumont. Right now, TCM is showing Robert Florey and Joseph Santley's The Cocoanuts (1929), an early talkie notable as the first movie featuring the four Marx Brothers – Groucho, Chico, Harpo, and Zeppo. Bill Hader has come a long way since his stint on Saturday Night Live, creating many popular characters and impersonations such as Stefon, Vincent Price and CNN’s Jack Cafferty. He is one of the highlights in such films as Adventureland, Knocked Up, Superbad and Pineapple Express, and so it is easy to see why author Mike Sacks interviewed him for his new book Poking A Dead Frog. In it, Hader talks about his career and he also lists 200 essential movies every comedy writer should see. Xo Jane recently published the list for those of us who haven’t had a chance to read the book yet. There are a ton of great recommendations and plenty I haven’t yet seen, but sadly my favourite comedy of all time isn’t mentioned. That would be Some Like It Hot. Still, it really is a great list with a mix of old and new.

I'm convinced the contestants don't watch previous seasons. The ladies all said how excited they were to see Ben standing in front of them when they exited their assigned limos on Day One, gushing things like "Ashley made a mistake, but her mistake is my opportunity."
And each and every episode makes it more apparent. The girls continue to write down their greatest fears, which the ratings-driven crew uses to their advantage and whips up the most fear-inducing dates they can think of. In turn, our bachelor and his nearly-paralyzed-with-fear date conquer their phobias together, spewing out ridiculous clichés about taking leaps of faith or crossing boundaries in their "relationship."
The ladies also continually talk smack about each other on their precious one-on-one times. Don't they realize they're wasting time bashing the others when they could be winning Ben over? They only get five minutes, if that, to sell...

I stumbled upon a list of 41 of Woody Allen's favorite films over at This Recording, which were actually pulled from Allen's 2007 biography written by Eric Lax titled "Conversations with Woody Allen: His Films, the Movies, and Moviemaking" which you can buy from Amazon for $16.47.
Allen comments on the lists, of which he breaks up into different categories, saying, "My tastes seem to me unremarkable except in the area of talking plot comedies where I seem to have little tolerance for anything and certainly not my own films."
Unfortunately, he's pretty much right as I would bet most avid movie watchers will have seen the majority of the films he lists and then when he does get to talking plot comedies he waves a white flag in fear of looking foolish saying, "[My] taste is eccentric and there are any number of comedies I love that would make me seem foolish or should I say,...

Ian Sansom on the comic clan who grew up in a happy, hectic house
The Schönbergs lived at 179 East 93rd Street, in the Yorkville neighbourhood of Manhattan, an area then inhabited mostly by immigrants from Germany and Eastern Europe. Fanny and Levy were from Dornum, in East Frisia. Their daughter Minnie married a man she met at a dance, Samuel Marx, a tailor, from Mertzwiller, in Alsace; the family called him Frenchie. Minnie and Samuel had five sons: Leonard, born 1887; Adolph, born 1888; Julius, born 1890; Milton, born 1892; and Herbert, born 1901. Their firstborn son, Manfred, had died aged just seven months in 1886.
Years later, Adolph recalled their early years. "There were 10 mouths to feed every day ... five boys ... cousin Polly, who'd been adopted as one of us; my mother and father, and my mother's mother and father. A lot of the time my mother's sister, Aunt Hannah, was around too. And on...

Some TV shows wrap up their season by dangling a big question, leaving you hanging for months. But not America’s Funniest Home Videos. Tonight at 7 p.m. Et/Pt, that other Tom Bergeron-hosted ABC series will provide closure to season 21 (21!)) by revealing which of the three $100,000-winning clips has claimed the show’s grand prize, a package of Disney vacations. (Then again, how bizarre would it be if just once, Afv left us on a cliffhanger — a cliphanger, if you will — and we didn’t find out whether a golf ball jacked some dude in the head, gut,...

My Fab Four has, and always will be – Queen. Growing up in the 70′s their music and their overall look had never been seen before. Most will give David Bowie credit for ushering in glam rock with his alter ego Ziggy Stardust. Yeah, sure. That’s like saying “Under Pressure” was not a Queen song, when it is Freddie doing the majority of the vocals. All these years later, Queen is still somewhat underrated in the halls of music history, and that has always baffled me. In the Us, there is no denying that Mr. Mercury’s homosexuality played a large part in a certain segment of the male population denying that they admired Queen because that would mean they are gay. Outside the States, Queen are considered to be the biggest band on the planet and have influenced rockers like Anthrax, Nirvana, George Michael, Lady Gaga, Metallica,...

If you're like us, you probably greeted the news that the New York Racing Association had jettisoned Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" in favor of Jay-z's "Empire State of Mind" at this weekend's Belmont Stakes with a mixture of glee and elation.
After all, gambling is a wonderful pastime, one that has sadly fallen out of favor with kids today. So if it takes replacing a stodgy standard like "New York, New York" with a hip tune like "Empire" to get America's youth back to the track, well, then we're all for it. Because truly, we know of no better cure for juvenile diabetes than sweating out a 5,7,2,8 Superfecta.
Anyway, in an attempt to force the hand of other Racing Associations around the country (we imagine their boardrooms are made up entirely of old dudes in satin jackets, Btw), we've thrown together a quick list of even more...

Talk to Gary Ross, the writer-director of Seabiscuit, and he'll tell you the book upon which his new film is based wouldn't have been atop the best-seller list in the United States if it was just about horse racing. That's precisely why those behind the project have donned their blinkers and are coming out of the gates believing the Depression-era sports drama from Universal, DreamWorks and Spyglass Entertainment has a good chance of entering the winner's circle, bucking the odds of its Hollywood predecessors. The film opens today in wide release. Across the board, horse-racing movies have produced very few boxoffice winners. Of the genre's 200 or so films, most have ended up in the also-ran category, with the notable exceptions of National Velvet, Phar Lap, The Black Stallion and A Day at the Races. The story, based on Laura Hillenbrand's Seabiscuit: An American Legend, is about three men who come together and take an unlikely horse, Seabiscuit, to amazing victories that inspire a downhearted nation. Ross says he had no trepidation about tapping into the definitive resource of his movie's subject. "(Hillenbrand) knows the story better than I do," says Ross, a longtime horse-racing fan. "She is a custodian for it. I would literally not do anything without Laura's blessing. I'm not afraid of that."...
