A little bit of cornpone humor never hurt anybody, and what could have been a fun predecessor to the Ma & Pa Kettle films of the 1950's turns out to be a disappointment in The Jones Family series. If the idea was to create a series for Louise Fazenda and Eddie Collins, this film puts an immediate stop to that for which we can all be grateful. She's the hog calling sister of small town mayor Jed Prouty.

Still living on the Family Farm in the country and visited by Prouty, mom Florence Roberts, sister-in-law Spring Byington and younger members of the family still living at home when all of a sudden the Jones house catches on fire. Prouty ends up co-hosting a corn husking contest with his sister, and that ultimately ends up with him becoming involved in local political scandal when he is named as a candidate for the Senate.

Just like what happened when he ran for mayor, Jed finds himself the victim of ruthless politicians and a scheme to prevent him from showing up for the husking contest, but where there's a husk, there's a way, and where there's a Jones, there's definitely going to be an all-out search to get him there in time. The relationship between his sister and Collins seems filled with contempt, and makes this a strange entry in the series.
