Social media was astir Thursday after a viral tweet brought up legendary actress Judy Garland’s on-screen history with blackface. The tweet, attributed to @browardbully, said, “two movies. a year apart. same b—-. shoutout to Gen Z for teaching me this,” showing the late actress in 1938’s “Everybody Sing” next to her appearing in the 1939 feature, “The Wizard of Oz.”
The tweet has drawn over 50 million views. Many have argued that, at the time, the actress was under oppressive studio control and in the beginnings of a lifelong battle with drug addiction. Others have tried to contextualize her use of blackface, which many Old Hollywood stars participated in at the time. Twitter user and YouTube creator Be Kind Rewind tried to break down the complicated feelings viewers can have about Hollywood’s history with blackface.
Judy was asked to do this because white people found this an acceptable form of entertainment through the 1930s.

Of course, Mistress Fraser has to undergo several life-threatening incidents before the happy homecoming takes place. There’s the aforementioned serpent going to second base, as well as a swarm of...

Anne Marie is tracking Judy Garland's career through musical numbers...
With Judy Garland's growing success, MGM decided it was time to have her star in her own feature. The studio dusted off some musical numbers (arranged by Roger Edens) as well as a handful of contract players and Ziegfeld stars. Judy played a young aspiring actress stuck in a conservative school. Supported by her zany Russian maid (Fanny Brice), the young girl decides to join a musical. The result was another hit for Judy, and a delight for future Vaudeville nerds and historians.
The Movie: Everybody Sing (MGM 1938)
The Songwriters: Harry Ruby & Bert Kalmar
The Players: Judy Garland, Fanny Brice, Allan Jones, Reginald Owen, Billie Burke, directed by Edwin L. Marin
The Story: In Everybody Sing, Judy was joined by not one but two famous Ziegfeld women: Billie Burke (aka Mrs. Florenz Ziegfeld, who we'll see again later), and Fanny Brice,...

I have a curious habit, maybe you have it too, if you are a real movie geek, film fan, cinema addict, what have you.
A certain number of movies that I have seen and loved with all my heart were losers at the box office or were mercilessly slammed by critics, usually both. This doesn’t happen all the time, mind you. I know a bad movie when I see one. But several times I have seen a movie on opening day and loved it so much I was sure it would be a big hit and be loved by critics and film goers, nope, not all the time.
Here then is my own personal and highly eccentric top ten list, with some honorable mentions, of movies that lost out, yet I love them still, many of them desperately, hysterically, madly do I love these films, well anyway… let me tell you about it.

Everybody sing! That's the underlying message in Ed Sheeran's latest music video for his hit single "Sing," which was released on his Facebook page today. The hit tune, which has climbed to the top of the music charts, is the first single off of Sheeran's forthcoming album X. The clip features Sheeran's puppet alter-ego having a wild night out before the real Ed Sheeran and Pharrell Williams join in on the fun. The puppet is seen dancing in a limo with a slew of beautiful ladies, boozing it up at a bar before he sings karaoke and even hitting up a strip club as the camera cuts to video of Ed singing and playing the guitar. The trio is seen living the A-list life as they mingle with...

The Lincoln Center and the Paley Center here in NYC have joined forces to celebrate the all-singing all-dancing legend that is Judy Garland!
Shout 'Hallelujah', c'mon get happy!"
Once upon a time she was dubbed "The World's Greatest Entertainer." Few celebrities have ever earned their PR self-mythologizing titles the way Judy G did. There's just no beating her for musical pleasure and cathartic heartbreak. And as if her sensational singing and dancing weren't enough, she was a fine actress, too!
I missed the first week of the celebration being in Michigan but I'll see what I can catch for the remainder of the summer program which ends August 9th. If you're not in New York City, you can always follow along at home as best you can with an impromptu DVD festival.
Still to come in the festival are...
