Historical curiosity

This was one of a number of "war" films made in the late thirties before the outbreak of war. This was made shortly after the signing of the Munich agreement. It reflects the fears of the audience. It is implied that the enemy will be Germany. One of the characters says Ach so.Geoffrey Toone is a naval officer charged with the job of stopping the plans of the enemy to invade England across the North Sea.His girlfriend lives in a house which is a hotbed of spies and fifth columnists. The idea of fifth columnists was a significant feature of the early war years.By the way the cook is played by Joan Fred Romney not the immortal Fred.

Lively thriller

Warning: Spoilers
LUCK OF THE NAVY is a lively and entertaining little thriller, made just before the war when everyone knew that the Nazis were up to no good. The story is one of deceit and peril, with stalwart naval heroes up against dastardly fifth columnists, and there's a healthy dose of broad comedy thrown into the mix. After the initial set-up, much of the action takes place at a party in a country house, where a sinister plot sets into motion: expect bumbling comedy, fist fights, a little romance, traitorous behaviour, and plenty of surprising excitement. Geoffrey Toone and Clifford Evans, both to become Hammer stars in the early 1960s in TERROR OF THE TONGS and KISS OF THE VAMPIRE respectively, star.
