You pick up a lot of baggage when you live to be 100, a sentiment confirmed by the long, long movie career of Bob Hope. His unofficial status as the preeminent entertainer of the 20th century is open to debate but he was without a doubt that era’s most conspicuous comedian. Marlon Brando’s infamous dismissal, “He’ll go to the opening of a market to receive an award”, was mean-spirited but it had the sting of truth; for over eighty years Hope was everywhere, for better or worse.
Living up to his nickname, “Rapid Robert”, the 31-year old Hope shot out of the gate in 1934 with a series of quick-on-their feet comic shorts revolving around his unique presence as a leading man and comical sidekick rolled into one. It wasn’t long before he was starring in pleasantly prosaic musicals like The Big Broadcast of 1938 and handsomely mounted...

London — Farewell, London. Good luck matching that, Rio.
Coldplay, Rihanna and Jay-z rocked the Olympic Stadium on Sunday night to give the biggest-ever Paralympic Games a rousing send-off, wrapping up an unforgettable summer of sports in Britain.
The three-hour party at the packed 80,000-seat arena in east London gave the world a chance to celebrate 11 days of Paralympic competition that have shifted perceptions and shattered stereotypes about the disabled.
"In this country, we will never think of sport the same way and we will never think of disability the same way," said Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London organizing committee. "The Paralympians have lifted the cloud of limitation."
Central to the closing ceremony – called the "Festival of the Flame" – were the 4,200 Paralympians from 164 nations who encircled the field of play from the start, waving flags and taking in the extraordinary atmosphere. By the end of the extravaganza, they created an...

Coldplay was accused of plagiarism before, back in 2008 by Joe Satriani, for ripping off his riff in their sentimental anthem, "Viva La Vida." Their latest single, "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall," faced the same accusations when people realized it has the same cheesy melody and beat as a 1990 dance track called "Ritmo de la Noche," by Mystic.
Not only is Coldplay's new summer single, "pseudo-inspirational claptrap" as IFC's Grayson Currin called it, but it doesn't have an original note in it. In fact the song, "Ritmo de la Noche" that "Teardrop" is rips off, is in turn a rehashing of Australian impresario, Peter Allen's, "I go to Rio," co-written with Adrienne Anderson.
But is it actually plagiarism? No, Vulture points out, Coldplay's Chris Martin was inspired to write the song after watching the film, "Biutiful" by Alejandro González Iñárritu. In the film, there is scene that takes place in...

Before a massive audience at Rock am Ring Festival in Nürburgring, Germany, the Chris Martin-led rock outfit Coldplay unveiled five new songs from their still untitled LP -- which will be their first since 2009's "Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends." And thanks to the magic of the camera and the internet, they have de facto released them onto the web.
Titled, “Hurts Like Heaven,” “Major Minus,” “Us Against the World,” and “Cartoon Hearts,” they're sad-sounding additions to the even sadder new single the band just released, "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall." So, if you want an idea of what they might sound like before even pressing play, you have some pretty strong hints in those song names.
That being said, some might surprise you in their upbeat pop tempos!
Also: if you hear traces of the song "Ritmo de la Noche" by Mystic in "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall,...

The single that Coldplay announced at the end of last month is officially out for digital sale. "I turn the music on/ I've got my records on/ From underneath the rubble, sing a rebel song," frontman Chris Martin crooned in "Every Tear is a Waterfall".
The song is first single from their upcoming not-yet-titled album which Martin has described as an album filled with songs "about life, the good stuff, the bad stuff, everything." Brian Eno and Markus Dravs who worked on the band's last album "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends" come back as the new album's producers.
The band have confirmed that "Every Tear is a Waterfall" samples Australian 1970s songwriter Peter Allen's single "I Go to Rio". In December 2008, the band were sued by Joe Satriani over claimed that they have plagiarized his 2004 track "If I Could Fly" for their single "Viva La...
