Sea Duck
CuriosityKilledShawn5 August 2005
When this cartoon isn't busy with those really old 'bum' jokes that were only funny in 1903 it's actually quite fun with an untypical ending. Donald, fancying himself as an old-fashioned Navy Captain, takes his nephews out on the sea in a pretty big sailboat. But, being Donald he has no idea how to hoist the anchor safely or even how to properly cast off the ropes.

Pretty soon he's flying around in the sky attached to the mast which has broken off and turned into a kite. And then he battles a hungry shark and, you know what, he actually wins by punching it out. Strange to think that Donald actually succeeds at something.

Amusing

This is a funny and well animated cartoon, where our favourite duck and his nephews go sailing and encounter a watery disaster of "titanic" proportions. As predictable as it is, it is fun to watch and never fails to deliver the laughs. Donald's encounters with the big shark was a definite highlight.

The animation is very colourful and vibrant, and the music is lovely as is always the case with these Donald Duck cartoons. In a one man show, Clarence Nash voices all the characters and does a superlative job. Nobody else could do it better, Nash WAS Donald. And Huey, Duey and Louie are just as funny, but maybe I am biased but Donald steals the show. Overall a really fun cartoon. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Quite entertaining

'Sea Scouts' is an animated short movie from Disney starring Donald Duck as a captain of a ship. His nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie are his sailors. Of course things do not go as planned and when they want to sail away the ship falls apart. Donald has an encounter with a big shark. Now his nephews must save him.

The short is pretty funny. Especially the moments before the ship falls apart, one with some flags in particular, are great. The animation is quite good and makes sure this is a real cartoon. Sometimes very inventive, always pretty funny, this is another fine animated short from Disney.

"Hoist the anchor! Lower the boom!"

Warning: Spoilers
This is a fun outing with Donald Duck and his three nephews - Huey, Dewey and Louie. I have to digress here a second and mention something I noticed when I first learned to read. The first time I picked up a Disney Comic book, it struck me that even though they sounded similar, the names Huey, Dewey and Louie were all spelled differently. That just amazed the heck out of me for reasons I can't explain even today. Of course as one grows older, all types of spelling inconsistencies pop up in the English language, and this winds up being a trivial one.

Anyway, this is a colorful eight minute adventure set on the high seas, with Admiral Donald leading his troops just long enough until his boat is smashed to smithereens. For what it's worth, I thought the animators made a wise decision by coloring the shark green instead of blue or gray, that was just the contrast needed to make the story a more colorful one. I couldn't believe it though when Donald prevailed by punching him out! Where was he when they needed him on the set of "Jaws"?

Sea Scouts, See Ship, See Shark!

Warning: Spoilers
ONCE AGAIN WE see a Disney short subject that is heavily involved with the Natural World. This seemed to be a popular topic and the company came by it in a matter of fact manner. The subject of maritime activities was one that any one of a number of artists, technicians or animators were probably into boating in their leisure time and so would the boss, Mr. Disney.

THERE ALSO SEEMED to be a genuine respect sense of awe for Nature's own that ran through the Disney product and this was clearly evident even from the earliest of times. This element was probably the main reason that the company went to the live action TRUE LIFE ADVENTURE Series.

REGARDING THIS SHORT, our current honored and "spotlighted" guest of the day, it is a very uncomplicated and basic construct of the interplay between "Unca Donald:" and his manic trio of duckling nephews. Set on a sailing ship, it manages to spoof military protocol as well as oceanographic esoteric activities.

SPLITING TIME WITH his nephews is a snarling green shark of undetermined species. The shark appears to take it all very seriously and personally in his pursuit of the elder member of the Duck family. Following some very exhaustive and prolonged struggles with this unidentified species of Selachimorpha (Scientific name), the Uncle and three Youngsters retreat toward the shores and use a most appropriate sight gag titled "Rear Admiral."

THIS SHORT WAS apparently made during the period when the temperamental hot headed Anatidea (Scientific name for duck) was proving his worth and striking out ahead as Disney's top animated Banana.

MY GOOD BUDDY, Schultz, says that Donald Duck has become the Top Banana at Disney because he has appeal.*

NOTE: * This is one of the few reviews we've done which didn't have any Foot Note. So Schultz, here it is!

Donald versus the shark!
planktonrules4 July 2020
"Sea Scouts" was made during the finest years for Disney shorts. Like other shorts from this era, they were unsurpassed by other studios...thanks to gorgeous backgrounds and highly detailed animation. "Sea Scouts", simply put, is a gorgeous short...the type you would expect from Disney in 1939.

The first thing you'll likely notice is that Donald's nephews look a tad different--more rounded. This is because it's an early appearance by them and they still weren't as consistently drawn. This is not a criticism...more an observation.

As for the story, Donald is going to take his nephews boating but unfortunately, a nasty shark is lurking nearby and plans on eating them. Can Donald manage to save himself and his little nephews?

This is a well animated and enjoyable cartoon. I particularly liked the way it ended...certainly NOT what I expected!

Duck Tales At Sea
Ron Oliver26 September 2002
A Walt Disney DONALD DUCK Cartoon.

Young SEA SCOUTS Huey, Dewey & Louie must try to save their Uncle Donald when the officious Duck has a dangerous encounter with a hungry shark.

This is a very fine little film, with excellent animation and a humorous storyline. The Disney artists were able to make use of several of their favorite posterior gags. Clarence "Ducky" Nash supplies the voice for Donald.

Walt Disney (1901-1966) was always intrigued by drawings. As a lad in Marceline, Missouri, he sketched farm animals on scraps of paper; later, as an ambulance driver in France during the First World War, he drew figures on the sides of his vehicle. Back in Kansas City, along with artist Ub Iwerks, Walt developed a primitive animation studio that provided animated commercials and tiny cartoons for the local movie theaters. Always the innovator, his ALICE IN CARTOONLAND series broke ground in placing a live figure in a cartoon universe. Business reversals sent Disney & Iwerks to Hollywood in 1923, where Walt's older brother Roy became his lifelong business manager & counselor. When a mildly successful series with Oswald The Lucky Rabbit was snatched away by the distributor, the character of Mickey Mouse sprung into Walt's imagination, ensuring Disney's immortality. The happy arrival of sound technology made Mickey's screen debut, STEAMBOAT WILLIE (1928), a tremendous audience success with its use of synchronized music. The SILLY SYMPHONIES soon appeared, and Walt's growing crew of marvelously talented animators were quickly conquering new territory with full color, illusions of depth and radical advancements in personality development, an arena in which Walt's genius was unbeatable. Mickey's feisty, naughty behavior had captured millions of fans, but he was soon to be joined by other animated companions: temperamental Donald Duck, intellectually-challenged Goofy and energetic Pluto. All this was in preparation for Walt's grandest dream - feature length animated films. Against a blizzard of doomsayers, Walt persevered and over the next decades delighted children of all ages with the adventures of Snow White, Pinocchio, Bambi, Peter Pan and Mr. Toad. Walt never forgot that his fortunes were all started by a mouse, or that simplicity of message and lots of hard work always pay off.

After viewing SEA SCOUTS, I'm beginning to think that . . .
pixrox14 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
. . . Sharon Shark is my favorite Dizzy cartoon character. Sharon has a lot going for her. Like Captain Hook's alligator nemesis in PETER PAN, Sharon chows down on Don Duck during this story--TWICE. She's much more stylish than alleged fashion plate Cruel Ella the Devil, decking herself out with Don's admiral hat. It looks much better on her than it did on him. Sharon is not a one-trick rodent like Mickey, surprising us by cutting a mast in half length wise as she pursues her duck nuggets appetizer. Naturally, Dizzy found Sharon too good to be used regularly, relegating her to the same dust bin as Cousin Gus.

Hoist the sail!
OllieSuave-00719 May 2018
A funny featuring Donald Duck and his nephews, where he commands the three kids to steer a sailboat. What results are some classic slapstick comedy that is Donald Duck and some hilarious gags - from Donald getting dressed like a fortune teller after getting entangled in the sail to Huey, Dewey, and Louie getting thrown clear across the boat.

Donald's bout with a hungry shark is the highlight of the cartoon short, and lets us see some of Donald's tough instincts!

Cute Disney Short

Sea Scouts (1939)

*** (out of 4)

Cute Disney short has Donald Duck taking his nephews Huey, Dewey and Louis out to sea where he hopes to teach them a few things. Nothing goes as planned for the poor uncle and soon he has to deal with a large shark. Fans of the Donald Duck shorts will certainly enjoy this one as the typical high quality animation is on full display and there are several funny gags. Needless to say, the stuff dealing with the shark are the highlights including a scene where Donald is frantically trying to climb a rope to avoid being eaten.
