Three Buster Keaton shorts: The Balloonatic, The Goat, and The High Sign will screen April 10th at 2pm at the Walt Theater in New Haven, Missouri. The films will be accompanied by The Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra.
There’s nothing better than silent films accompanied by the Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra. The group is a treasure and St. Louis is lucky to have them here. The group has actively redefined both the local music and film cultures of the area. The ensemble – equal parts indie/punk-stalwart and academically trained composer and musicians – provide life performance of new film scores to classic silent films. The Rats are hitting the road this Sunday, April 2nd and will be playing at the Walt Theater in New Haven, Missouri (about 60 miles west of St. Louis). The show starts at 2pm.

Ann Rutherford, best remembered as Scarlett O’Hara’s younger sister Carreen in Gone with the Wind, died earlier this evening at her home in Beverly Hills according to Rutherford’s friend, actress Anne Jeffreys. Rutherford, who had been suffering from heart problems, was 94 as per the Los Angeles Times obit (as per most other sources, she was 91). [Recent Ann Rutherford photos, Ann Rutherford and Marsha Hunt.]
In 2010, Rutherford told the Times that MGM mogul Louis B. Mayer was unwilling to loan her out for "a nothing part" such as Carreen in son-in-law David O. Selznick’s mammoth adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s novel. Mayer changed his mind when Rutherford burst into tears.
Gone with the Wind ultimately became the biggest blockbuster ever. To this day, the Civil War romantic drama has sold more tickets than any other movie in North America. (Possibly, around the world, relative to population.) Gwtw also won eight Oscars, in addition to two special awards.

"La Femme Nikita" lives to kill again.
The CW has picked up the pilot for a TV remake of "La Femme Nikita" and a family drama by the producers of "Gilmore Girls," reports THR's Live Feed.
"Nikita, which centers on a young condemned criminal who's trained as a top-secret assassin, has already lived many lives. There's the original French movie in 1990 by Luc Besson, the Hong Kong film "Black Cat" (1991) and American remake "Point of No Return" (1993) starring Bridget Fonda and the USA Network TV series also called "La Femme Nikita" (1997-2001) starring Peta Wilson.
In The CW update, a new assassin is trained to replace Nikita, who's gone rogue.
In more gentle CW news, the network has also ordered a family drama from "Gilmore Girls'" producers Amy Sherman Palladino and Dan Palladino.
The as yet untitled drama is set on a Wyoming horse farm.
Both projects seem consistent...
