Storyline
Plot Summary |
While traveling to the countryside of England by train, the repressed, shy Lina McLaidlaw meets reckless playboy Johnnie Aysgarth when he crashes her first-class cabin with a third-class ticket. When they meet again, Johnnie overhears a conversation of her father about her heritage and courts her, and she immediately falls in love with him. They get married and when they return from their fancy honeymoon, Lina discovers that Johnnie is a broke gambler who borrows money from his friends to live in a high standard. Then she finds out that he is also a liar, and after receiving his old friend and partner in a real-estate business, Beaky, in their home, Lina believes that Johnnie intends to kill Beaky. However, they decide to travel to Paris to dissolve their partnership. When two detectives come to their house to investigate Beaky's mysterious death in Paris, Lina believes Johnnie is the murderer, and she will be his next victim. Did You Know?
Trivia | In interviews, Sir Alfred Hitchcock said that an RKO executive ordered that all scenes in which Cary Grant appeared menacing be excised from the movie. When the cutting was completed, the movie ran only fifty-five minutes. The scenes were later restored, Hitchcock said, because he shot each piece of film so that there was only one way to edit them together properly. This is a technique called 'in-camera editing', a trick Hitchcock had already employed a year before during filming of Rebecca (1940), to prevent producer David O. Selznick from interfering with the final cut of the movie. See more » |
Goofs | Although Johnnie admits to Lina, after taking an extremely expensive house, that he is broke, they continue to live there, employ servants, and run a very expensive car. No explanation is made of how they can afford this. The job Johnnie later gets, in an estate manager's office, would pay only a small part of these running costs. See more » |
