Newspaper reporter Ken Marshall, in the course of his investigation of political corruption, uncovers evidence that, if published, will wreck the career of a candidate running for state governor. To prevent the disclosure, Ken is knocked unconscious, soaked with whiskey and then placed at the wheel of a car sent careening down the highway. There is a wreck in which three people are killed. He is sent to jail but manages to escape and five years later, using an assumed name and in another town, he is again reporting when his past, in the form of a prison cellmate, shows up with intentions of blackmailing him.
