It was this day in 1934 that the duck who would become the world's most famous angry bird was born. Albeit, he was already fully grown, but still: in making his first ever animated appearance, Donald Duck began his ascent to stardom.
Donald, in a somewhat different form created by Dick Lundy, appeared in the Silly Symphony short, “The Wise Little Hen.” Life started off on a rough note for Donald, as he faked his way, as VP of the Idle Hours club, into not getting any corn -- and a kick in the butt from Peter Pig. Insult to injury!
Donald's a family man, with his longtime love Daisy (originally name Donna) and nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie. Perhaps his highest honor came when his cartoon, "Der Fuehrer's Face," in which he dreams that he's a Nazi, won the 1942 Academy Award for Animated Short film.

Do you prefer "Daffy" or "Donald"? I can't say I've ever been much of a fan of either of the famous Ducks (maybe Howard, briefly, in the 80s). Maybe sea fowl just aren't my thing? I was, however, totally into Chip & Dale (and chipmunks) as a child. So here's seven minutes of funny Toy Tinkers (Best Animated Short Film Nominee, 1949) starring all three to start your morning:
Here's a list of the ten best Donald Duck cartoons from a real fan. And if you've never seen Donald's only Oscar-winning short, Der Fuehrer's Face (1942) you can watch it on YouTube.
The Disney and Warner Bros characters used to get Oscar nominated a lot in the Animated Short category. In the past couple of decades the closest thing we have to a perennial in that category is Wallace & Gromit or Pixar as a studio, if that counts, though their characters don't repeat.

Seattle's Scarecrow Video is located approximately 15 blocks down the road from my house (don't stalk me!) and on top of being one of the largest independent video stores in the country they apparently have a blog I knew nothing about and my first trip to said blog has me looking squarely at a post titled "Before They Were Basterds," which is described by the site as such: Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds is perhaps his most deft handling of reference and homage yet. The video store nerds at Scarecrow Video would like to present to you an unofficial and in progress footnotes companion to Basterds. Some of these films are directly referenced in the film, others are only evoked, while others still are films we simply felt should go on the list. All titles will be available for rent in a special section except where noted. Now, I want to...
